k, I'm fairly certain that the original play is Greek and that the writer and composer is Justinian I, but sometime during the 19th century. The uniform should really be blue.
Perhaps you're thinking of a different iteration of the story. Tchaikovsky's (Russian) ballet was set to Alexander Dumas' (French) tone-downed version of the story based on ETA Hoffman's (German) book, "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King" released in the early 19th century. Hoffman wrote it for his friend's (Julius Hitzig) children (Marie and Fritz, hence the names), drawing on real-world connections such as the family themselves and their standing in society, and ultimately how the dreams of a child are in opposition to that upbringing. Even Drosselmeier is often said to be based loosely on Hoffman (hopefully very), as Hoffman was a self-proclaimed eccentric and often brought Marie and Fritz gifts to show his affection for them. As for the color of the uniform, it's been widely changed to red and blue mostly, but in the original story it was a violet color.

Why is there a glass breaking every 5 minutes? Had to go to a different video.
