Best of BobBlast - The Last Flowers of Manet
Welcome Back to Another BobBlast!
Painting the subject of flowers was not what I wanted to paint. For me, at the time, they were merely reproductions. I felt there was nothing I could learn by painting them. Boy, was I ever wrong! I found a beautiful book - The Last Flowers of Manet - the paintings in this book stopped me in my tracks. Especially, I was in awe - the painterly quality in these beauties was so yummy and clean. I was particularly taken with “Pinks and Clematis in a Crystal Vase”. Secondly, the neutral colored background next to a solid colored flower turned on the light switch for me!
I studied Manet’s neutrals for months and his joy of painting and graphic brush strokes of color kept me in the studio, practicing his flower paintings and his joy!
But wait!! We were visiting the Musée d’Orsay - second floor, French Painters’ section; and turning the corner into the room… and there it was… “Pinks and Clematis in a Crystal Vase” - I never experienced that feeling before. I burst into gloppy tears and a runny nose. I was shocked with happiness. Here was the original painting ten inches away! I never knew one painting could influence me so much - and it did.
Today I paint similar floral subjects, with a whole lot of stuff I learned by copying masters like Édouard Manet. His neutral backgrounds, strong, colorful flowers, glass vases and reflections got me back to how I want to paint.
What I learned…
•You don’t need all the flower colors and sizes in a painted bouquet
•Simple shapes - the fewer the better
•Strong graphics = bold compositions
•Flower bouquet is the focal point
Also I learned to paint glass vases. I look at my glass vases differently - light, darks and reflections. What a great lesson!

Hi Bob, it was Manet that inspired you to start painting florals,it was you that inspired me to start painting florals in an abstract way. I love your flower paintings and havnt stopped since i first discovered you 3 years ago. THANKYOU.❤👍👍👍❤
Thank you Andrea!
Yes, crying in front of a painting is a thing, the Mona Lisa for me and the statue of David. Awe inspiring. Thank you for all your wonderful lessons over the years.
Thank you!
It’s a successful painting when it produces an emotional response in the viewer. That’s what I’ve felt looking at many of your paintings.
What a kind and wonderful thing to say! Thank you. And-I definitely agree about the emotional response for a successful painting.
I love these!!
Thank you!
Always amazing. I'm glad I took your class over the last weekend.
Always a pleasure!
Unlike the impressionists, Manet wasnt afraid to use black. Thanks Bob
You bet!
Your are wonderful 😊❤
Thanks!
I wish more people in the world could be brought to tears before a painting - I think I fell in love with you for a minute there! If only I could have the experience one more time of crying in front of a painting like that. I did once when I was in the “Mark Rothko Temple” in Houston (near the Menile collection) in a fairly dark room with a ray of sunlight coming from the ceiling and I was seated on a bench surrounded by 3 or 4 of his large canvases. They Hummmmed. Can you just imagine it? It was powerful. I don’t think it exists any more, but it was aptly named.
Oh Thank You! What a great experience and observation! Thanks for sharing.
You do beautiful florals Bob.
Thanks! I never thought of myself as a flower painter... but I guess it's true!
Amazing 👌🏻🌿Thanks 🌿🙏🏻👏🏻
Now... the large floral arrangement painting that has been unfinished for months has potential.
Enjoy always when U share about some of the ideas that U have and who enlightens some of your own techniques.
History does have a way of making us aware of our opportunities 🤔. Abn, Florida fan
Thank you! Good quote: "History does have a way of making us aware of our opportunities." Applies to a whole lot of stuff!
I paint in watercolors but use them boldly. Now and then I’ll do a black background with flowers and love doing them. I plan to purchase the book with Manet’s flowers. Thanks for the great video! I enjoy and learn so much from you!
Thank you Donna!
Thank you for another “How to” painting video, I always come away learning something new.
Thank you Terrie Rose!
I love this style!
Thank you!
I just love your flowers!
Thank you!
Awesomeness. You should put out a book or even like a yearly publication with pictures of your works. I wish more artists would do something like that. Im a big fan of books 🙂 I would definitely be collecting artist book/magazine's. It would be good for artists because a good way to show works for sale and also get the art out there at low cost to those who appreciate it. You have been very helpful and inspiring for me . Much love ❤️ 🙏
Thank you! I am glad you are enjoying the BobBlasts and my work!
Beautiful work
Thank you Robert!
A wonderful story about meeting the Manet flower painting, Bob! 😊
Thank you!
So enjoyable..love your free style and confident.
Thank you!
I have a lot of dedicated painting time this week and was wondering what to practice...❤🥀
Fantastic! Hope you had a good week!
Wow this is amazing.
Thank you! One of my favorites!
Love your stories Bob ❤-- can totally empathize with what happens when you see a painting in person, for me it was Rothko whose work I had only seen in reproduction. When I finally saw one in person I was in awe -- they are truly like windows into other dimensions, with many, many nuanced elements that are impossible to represent in a reproduction. Probably true of art in general -- it's a completely different experience when it is in front of you in the flesh.
Thank you for a great comment - I absolutely agree with you!
I'm working on a floral painting right now. You just changed the whole thing for me! Thank you 😊
Thank you! And my job is done! Enjoy painting.
I'm falling for the neutral colours for background and the book. Your work is so free and beautiful ❤
Thank you - I think that is when I starting playing around with neutrals too...
Its alway good to go back to the passed with finger painting to
I do love painting with my fingers!
Nice painting
Thanks!
Inspiring
Thank you!
Fantastično , ali molim vas ja sam iz Srbije, zašto nema titla za srpski jezik i ostale, samo engleski kao da ga ceo svet mora da zna. 😮
I believe that you can turn on the subtitles on your end, through your RUclips settings.
Liked the original better.
Just me.
Thanks Sam!
Yes, it was really painful 😢to watch light colors disappearing 🙈
