Cheese rolls are very much an iconic treat here in NZ. School groups sell them frozen in bags as fundraisers, and you will often see a scout troop or local kids rugby club cooking them on a grill in front of the local hardware store as a fundraiser. There are nationwide competitions for cafes to be named the place to get “The Best Cheese Roll”.
it's basically French Onion Soup (especially if you use Gruyere cheese). Onion soup topped with toast rounds and melted Gruyere over that is the classic. Strain out most of the liquid and roll it up and it probably wouldn't be any less messy😃 Sounds delicious!
yea i'm afraid that Aotearoa-NZ have really dropped the ball if they're not already taking the opportunity to put pickled or fermented things *inside* of these, especially spicy pickles/ferments. the basic cheese roll isn't really attracting me more than the basic grilled cheese, but kimchi cheese roll or even just a hot banana pepper cheese roll is another story.
NZ has a big savory pie scene (like pot pies). Not just traditional ones, but some inspired by international cuisines like Indian, Thai. etc. One of my favorite things there was to buy one and take it with me in my pack while hiking or sightseeing. Then eating it by hand trailside or at a park midafternoon. Love a good sandwich, but those pies were something special too.
What's not to love? I would instantly remix this in a skillet and make a grilled cheese roll-up... oh, snap! I just did it for lunch! It came out a bit more "taco" than "taquito" but it is lovely! I actually did have onion soup mix that I was saving for ranch dressing... easy enough. And the canned milk was leftover from holiday baking. I think it's kismet. Or as they say in New Zealand, whakapapa! Delish with a chippy! Good for when you knackered and don't feel like cooking, or if you pack a sad and just want to comfort food down on the bach. Of course Cambrian chili is always a tight cobber with grilled cheese!
One of those sandwiches where there’s nothing at all wrong with it, sounds good, and yet it does make me want to double check they’re doing all good mentally. Lil bit depression meal vibes
The look of the spread reminds me of Heinz Toast Toppers, came in a can, spread it on toast and put under the grill for a few minutes though sure this is far superior
Great Video Thx for it , pretty sure if you cranked the heat up a bit so it browns faster on the outside an doesn't give the cheese so much time to lose it's goodness it might work um sorta 🙂
I think some Kaitaia Fire sauce could work with this one. I'm not super well versed with New Zealand's hot sauce landscape, but the stuff's a favorite of mine.
Do you plan these far enough in advance, where you cuold publish a shopping list of ingredients for the month, so we can "play along at home"? I would love to do a weekly sandwich from your list, and the fun part would be trying to guess ahead of time which ones will be good and which ones will go in the bin :)
Must be made with fresh asparagus, canned asparagus being just nasty, therefore you can only have asparagus rolls in season. (November to February, give or take)
Or as we in New Zealand call it-the West Island. Old joke-Kiwi flies into Australia, fronts up to the Immigration desk. Officer asks him if he has any criminal convictions. Kiwi says nah, mate, I didn’t realize that was still a requirement.
Marmite is pretty common, I think. Though, I'm from the North Island, and these are firmly a Southland thing, so I've never actually had or seen one, and I could be totally wrong lol
Use reduced cream instead of evaporated milk to make the onion dip, add grated onions to the mixture, spread bread with mustard or marmite, avoid burning
So chuffed to see these on here. So disappointed in the execution… but with practice you’ll get there. It does roll easier with nasty white bread, and trim the crusts. For a MAX roll you can ask your bread to be sliced lengthwise…. Super roll😂
@ OK, but I'm pretty sure this snack predates Kiwi weed culture and general dankitude of the buds one can expect to find there. This is better explained by alcohol.

Cheese and bread always delish
Well, in Southland at least. I've never seen them here in the North Island lol
@ Huh, I didn’t realize that, I’ve always lived on the South Island.
@leslieherring381 yeah, it's one of the few regional dishes in the country.

Cheese and pickle flavour together will never not be delicious. Maybe if you flatten the bread with a rolling pin, it would roll up more easily.
I was going to say this.
my thought exactly

And also remove the crusts.
We're getting dangerously close to reinventing a tortilla, here.

You're on a roll with international sandwiches!
Crumby joke 😁

Calabrian?
Perfect plus-up, Barry!
NEW ZEALAND MENTIONED
🙌🇳🇿
Cheese rolls are a delicacy from the south of the South Island. They are deeeeelicious!
One of those sandwiches where there’s nothing at all wrong with it, sounds good, and yet it does make me want to double check they’re doing all good mentally. Lil bit depression meal vibes
That's a great looking sandwich! Sounds like it would taste amazing.
Some capers chopped up and added to the mix along with some minced onion might cut through the richness. And flattening the bread before hand.
Kosher dills for me. Thanks Barry. 👍👍
Keep the cheese rolling!😊
GJ, NZ. This one looks good.
Dipped in tomato soup would be amazing?
Barry's on a roll!

Would love to see a sandwich be plus-ed up with Cholula! I feel like I’ve seen hot sauce used as a plus up, but never Cholula.
I swear that's exactly what I thought it needed ❤

Very nice one! Perfectly plussed up with a jalapeno pickly popper.
Hmm...I think I'd like to try this rolled in a pizza dough or rolled in a tube of crescent rolls (layed out in a single sheet), then baked.
I think that is an excellent suggestion.
this needed the air fryer treatment.
Perfect plus up 👍🏻
Gonna start calling it shreddar cheese from now on.
Ninja Turtles missed an opportunity to collab with Kraft on that one back in the day haha
Yum
That looks delicious and the crunch sounded delicious. Now we just need smellavision.
Does anyone know where to get the single bread slicer at? Or brands? Or anything about it? Thanks in advance.
Sounds so good need to try I t
yeah man i'd like ten of those right now please
Have there been any pickley-pops this year?
Evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk are two VERY different things. It seems like maybe you also found out the hard way haha?
Phew boyo that’s a different taste experience 😂
Pickled jalapenos are always a good idea.
I love shedder cheese.

Next the NZ asparagus roll!
Must be made with fresh asparagus, canned asparagus being just nasty, therefore you can only have asparagus rolls in season. (November to February, give or take)
Ahhh New Zealand….the Australia of Australia
What the hell does that mean?
Nah, mate. New Zealand is the New Zealand of Australia.
Or as we in New Zealand call it-the West Island. Old joke-Kiwi flies into Australia, fronts up to the Immigration desk. Officer asks him if he has any criminal convictions. Kiwi says nah, mate, I didn’t realize that was still a requirement.
Australia wishes 😂
@@leslieherring381 lolzzzz
Seems kind of like someone tried to remember how to make Welsh Rarebit while high, which given that this is from New Zealand makes a lot of sense.
Puff puff pass 💨
So it's a quesa-toasta-rolla-dilla. Nice!
RUclips is offering to translate that to English for me! 😂
I love onions but onion soup mix always repeats on me ? 1:45
this is an absurdly wonderful innovation for the tomato soup community
You can use just grated onion if you don’t want kiwi onion dip (onion soup + canned reduced cream/evaporated milk)
I'm try this wit hot sauce.
So I think a flat bread of some sort would be the perfect change to this, not a Tortilla, that's too thin, but...... maybe a thin Naan bread?
Evil Sandwiches of History: we're going to plus this up with vegemite
Any particular New Zealandish plus-ups we could look out for?
Marmite is pretty common, I think. Though, I'm from the North Island, and these are firmly a Southland thing, so I've never actually had or seen one, and I could be totally wrong lol
Vegemite 👍
Also, if you’re feeling really whacky and hungry, some watties baked beans 😉
This deserves a second chance. Maybe a little less milk, dash of paprika for color. Flatten the bread so it rolls more smoothly.
Use reduced cream instead of evaporated milk to make the onion dip, add grated onions to the mixture, spread bread with mustard or marmite, avoid burning
You should have plussed that up with French onion soup lol
Mmm... Lembas bread
CROMCH!
Unfortunately I can't jalapeño.
The premonition worked twice in a row

Maybe in some nan, or a tortilla?
This is interesting but the form factor does not really work with this kind of bread, I think?
A cheese roll is best made with cheap sandwich bread
But are jalapenos indigenous to NZ? I challenge you to think about this in your plus ups.
We literally got spicy things about a decade ago here in NZ 😂 Love it, but it’s very newfangled!
😋😋🤤🤤
Hi
Looks tasty! I liked the “plus up.”
Am I bet that’s good
SECOND!!!!!!!!
Get rid of the roll, just put another slice of toast on top
So, a grilled cheese sandwich? 😅
@@williamharris8367 Grilled New Zealandwich
That looks like stoner food, except stoners didn't think it up.
👀
@@NZKiwi87 Lol, I contend it was drunks that thought it up
@@MaggieKeizai we grow some pretty dank buds down here 😉

@@MaggieKeizai 🤦♀️
Diapers?
Rye toast is far more malleable than other breads......just saying.
Work on your rolling skills 💨
