Shironuri Makeup: The Handmaid's Tale

- I finally decided to tackle one of my favorite novels to create a shironuri makeup look, called The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. In this video I'm discussing the symbolism in The Handmaid's Tale, how it ties in with religion and gender roles, and how I used those elements to create this shironuri makeup look.
Of course, important caveat: These are my own personal opinions about the book. This has also nothing to do with the Handmaid's Tale TV series, as I've never seen a single episode (I've only read the book).

Tell me...what books have you enjoyed recently? 🤓 Right now I'm reading Pioneers by David McCullough.
Minsooky I just finished a fascinating biography called Romantic Outlaws on Mary Shelley, who is most famous for having written Frankenstein, but wrote much more and was a big advocate for women’s rights in a time when it was even more unpopular than it is now. The book also talks equally about her mother, Mary Wollstonecraft, who was a HUGE proponent for women’s rights at a time when the idea was openly laughed at and mocked. They both suffered for their beliefs, in overt and subtle ways and it’s both amazing to see how long the fight for women’s rights has been going on and both the ways we’ve improved and ways we’ve barely changed. After I finished that, my dog of 14 years died (no relation to the book, just bad timing, haha) and I needed to return to a favorite, familiar, comfort-book, which in this case is The Last Unicorn by Peter S Beagle. Most people my age-ish have seen the animated film made of it which is very faithful, but the book is of course able to dive far deeper into the themes of love, loss, grief, sacrifice, comedy, heroism, success and tragedy all at once. The style is completely unique, being an homage to fairytales, a spoof of a fairytale and a completely serious story all at once. The only thing I can even compare it to is The Princess Bride, but IMO, Unicorn is even better. If you have any interest in those themes or you saw the movie as a kid and loved it, I strongly urge you to pick up the novel! It’s much more for adults than children (though there are only a few mild “bad words” that parents might object to) and I find new gems in it every time I read it, which is often! The other books I was considering picking up as comfort-books are Deerskin and Spindle’s End by Robin McKinley. Both are retelling of fairytales; Deerskin is a much lesser known one and DEFINITELY for adults but heavily feature dogs in it who remind me a lot of mine. The other retells Sleeping Beauty and is much lighter and suitable for all ages (but not at all patronizing), but with a far more interesting and active heroine who also happens to be able to talk to animals. They’re all tied for place of “favorite book ever” for me, it just depends on my mood which one I pick up. That’s what’s going on in my personal library right now! 😊
"From Here To Eternity" by Caitlin Doughty is one of the last few books I've read. It's about death traditions in different cultures around the world and how they mourn and celebrate their dead. I definitely recommend the book, it's fantastic.
Sarah Allegra I never knew that about her before! Interesting 🤔
Spook.... the handmade tale reminds me of life today in a way
Really well done! I love how you interpreted the themes from the book into your makeup. It’s a dark and unsettling look, but that’s the point. Thank you for bringing more attention to the book and the real social injustices it reflects!
love love loooove your explanation on the placement of the cross on your face 👍
Oh my god.... absolutely loved this. You're incredibly talented and I loved the commentary. Keep it up!
I love that you're inspired by art while also being, creating and inspiring art yourself. 🖤
Excellent video. Thanks for talking about the injustices happening and using your platform for this meaningful art and dialogue.
You have such a "dark" talent! It's awesome
It’s sad that this is what happens/happened in real life, but the book sounds so interesting to read. Also it’s sad what’s happening. When women/natives and poc in general never get justice much and when something happens to them, they never get put on the news or anything. Yet when a person not of color gets kidnapped or something to all over the news or even the murderers/men are claim to be mentally ill or gets away with horrible crimes and I wish it would stop
This is an absolutely breathtaking look! The book sounds really interesting and something that must be read. I now know what to read next, thank you!
The commentary on this was just...on point . I'm not sure how else to say it without getting in depth about many serious topics that require paragraphs upon paragraphs each.
Anyway, amazing look, amazing sounding book 💛
Thank you ❤ The book is worth reading just for Margaret Atwood's beautiful writing...she has such a way with words.
@@Minsooky I haven't read anything in a while and have a 7 hour ship trip coming up so it's the perfect time to enjoy some good writing!💛
I absolutely love both the makeup look and the commentary/interpretation. The combination of the two is pure art. Thank you so much for this and for speaking up about the horrors that occur in this world everyday.
Here's a question: do you think that if the protesters wore makeup looks like this to protest, that it would help to raise awareness if people asked them about what the makeup meant? Do you think that makeup could be used by the masses as a form of political protest?
It absolutely can, but I would be pretty shocked if anyone wore my makeup looks for that purpose lol
I love these type of videos :) You're so intelligent and articulate, and the fact we get that PLUS your creativity and talent with makeup is awesome. We're lucky to have you Minsooky!
Omgggg this looks so good and the story have me shivers Abit but wow..
I bought the handmaid’s tale in the late 80’s and I freaked out. I immediately tried to get all my friends to read it. I kept saying we would vote this in! I’ve probably purchased 3 or 4 paperbacks of this book (not everyone returns it). I’ve not watched the show. I find it weird that the lead actress was born into and remains in Scientology... love the look. Wish you had a list of the reds/products that you used.
Also for some reason I thought you were in Los Angeles!
I adore this look!
I listened to this getting ready for work a+
❤️🙌 yes to a new video and yes to Margaret Atwood !
Ur so talented!!!!
Can you do a q&a video or a day in the life ~ It’ll br interesting to know more about you 🦄
sure is fitting with all the reproduction health care bans happening lately. with that pregnant woman who was shot and lost her baby, and she's the one being charged with murder.
Its funny but, i always has the idea that we have the same age, and you just confirmed it xD
I love your looks but I wish you would feature your skin tone as a base more. You have such beautiful skin. I hope that doesn’t sound creepy lol.
its 3 am, now im scared to walk to the bathroom 😭😭😭😭😭
