I loved the fact that your studio was both a wood shop and a kitchen at the same time and everything was hand-built and a bit rickety. Together with you being an electrical engineer it gave it the feel of a mad scientist, the guy who always builds his own machines first before he can make the perfect recipe. And the small size made it relatable. You were making do with what you had, you were making the perfect dish by combining cheap things that everybody has access to. Now you are going to have a semi-professional kitchen. I guess this happens to many RUclips channels when they are successful: Now they have sponsors and enough money, they can go full-time, and they are taking it to the next level, but what falls behind is the ability to relate. I hope that much of your DIY-concept remains and you are still going to build your own croissant-rolling-machine instead of just getting one from a sponsor. I love your content and I am looking forward to more!

I got to say I liked your "sub-optimal" kitchen/workshop. As a fellow engineer, your approach to a problem/challenge really resonate with me. I love how you break down a task to its bare minimum, which for me is perfectly visualized by the lone gas-burner on a home made kitchen island. You are really good at showing the viewers that all major tasks can be completed by a series of minor tasks. Some may require practice, time or both, but being relatable and giving viewers the confidence of thinking "I could do this" is a great quality in you and your channel. I am looking forward to what's next and hope we get to see a lot of diy-solutions in this new kitchen as well.

Awesome! Just please don't go too crazy on the appliances. Big part of the appeal of your channel to me is the "hey I could make/cook that too tomorrow" feeling. What made me fall in love with your channel was when you were building 'Le Studio'. A maker in the food space was so refreshing. The engineer doing cookery (with the workshop and kitchen being one and the same) is the heart & soul of this channel. I'm glad to see some of that isn't lost with the floor-plans you teased in this video. I'm so excited to follow you on your journey with this new space.

Interior designer here: Every client hits that moment at demolition where it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. To us, it’s one of the most exciting phases because it’s the first tangible step towards completion. Stay positive, because as soon as framing, electrical, plumbing, and drywall are done, you are going to be so excited again. That’s when it’s going to feel like all that needs to be done is to fill in the spaces. It’s like having a blank canvas, whereas before, you didn’t even have an easel on which to paint. Congrats on breaking ground and I can’t wait to see how the studio looks!

I love that you have separate rooms, so you can have a kitchen area and a workshop area separate for building, and organise both these spaces efficiently because you're not having to cater to a room being both a kitchen AND a workshop.

Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither will your studio be built in a day. The good thing about that is how often the journey becomes an experience beyond the scope of the final result.
This reminds me of my current situation in moving into a house with a massive shop that still... after 2 years of living here... needs to be finished.
I am using that shop on a regular basis to do a lot of things, but it's still not finished, and in a way I'm glad for that. I'm expanding as I go while knowing I've still got room. I get the feeling your studio may turn out similar, and knowing it down the the walls that you build yourself will probably come into play in a positive way when you hit another point where growth is necessary.
Now I realize I'm just kinda rambling, but you get the point. The journey is always an important step, so it's awesome to see another basket taking the steps and bringing us along for the ups and downs.

The part about the mental challenges and *not* making your office too pleasant is soo recognizable. I love cooking, but I'm an engineer during the day and I need the change of scenery, a clean space, a minimal space, headphones on and most important, away from my bed. Sometimes I crave more nice stuff/chaos or whatever, but that is not the important part. Getting stuff done is. Great video about your progress, but some even bigger lessons can be learned.
All in all, an amazing video

Hi Alex, for your concealed chaos have a look at LCD private glass, would make a nice solution to go from minimalist design to “every tool accessible” (at least visually) with a simple switch, if you use it for all the cabinets doors 😉

The hardest part of any project in life is the beginning. You have the whole expanse of the project ahead of you. You want to advance to your next stage in life and profession and getting through this project is the essential path to reaching this new stage. It will build you as a person as well as your space. You have worked intensely to reach this point, throughout your time in your previous studio and now with your team of architects. You must gather up your strength and courage and think positive. This will give you your energy and vitality to keep moving forward. You will understand and achieve more as you go through this work in progress. Nothing replaces life experience. Go for it with your greatest joie de vivre!

I love the round arches in this new studio, they are beautiful and already give character to this place :) (haha, I've typed this comment while watching, just before you started talking about the arches!) But I also loved the striped pillar in the old studio, it was like a signature ;)
And I must stay that your old DIY portable kitchen and sort of mess always inspired me more, as a home cook, than pretty kitchens of some chefs. It's like the mentality that you can work with what you got, there are no excuses. I hope this feeling won't go away (and what you said about kitchen isle hints to me that you keep that in mind!)
Anyway, I hope you'll do fine with the renovation and I'm glad you're growing :) All the best, Alex!

Don't be disheartened Alex, with any project it often takes longer to clear the space than to create the new. (life long DIYer). The demolition clears the thoughts with the rubble and helps visualise the new space, even with impromptu improvements. It is part of the refining process. Note the elaborate planning is not the end, but the beginning, in making it YOUR space.

When designing spaces I find using a 3d environment, like a virtual world, I build things and spaces to plan out what I need/want. If you cut objects, squares/rectangles, from colored index cards you can lay them out on the floor plan and move things around to get a better visual in your mind of the space you are trying to create. At least that works well for me.

@Alex consider slidding doors instead of hinged doors for your kitchen's concealed chaos. The pros are that they don't take up floor space, so you can manoeuvre around with shelf/cupboards open. The cons are that you can't have all the whole array of shelves and cupboards open at the same time, and there is a difference in ease of use for some people, also, they might need to be slightly more recessed than hinged doors.

I think the translucency they pitched in their presentations are you can see from some of the renders makes more sense for the “organized chaos look”. Imagine a canvas or colorful items creating ever-changing designs behind these beautiful doors. Like the transparency in windows aero or ios7 when it first launched. 4:48
This is it - make all your cupboards this finish - and itl be beautifully neutral yet alive.

I've always thought of either doors that slid away, back into the shelving on their pivot, or slatted-roll slide doors/panels... though both take up storage space (and more so the more segmented), just to avoid having doors hanging open and more so being able to visually switch.
Though, usually imagining library/office/bedroom, and maybe sometimes work space; but for most Maker spaces that lost space is probably greatly wanted besides just more commonly connected with the chaos.

I was already thinking that if you want something to be clean and accesible, you should use drawers that are label with all your tools inside. These "drawers" could be vertically orientated against the wall or inside a closet with like a wood frame in the middle, so you could hang tools from either side (an H profile in your drawer vertical basically). Whatever your preference is ofcourse.

You are a good communicator.... both with your struggles and wins. It's a big step.... I'm sure it's a big investment also, but it will also open up all kinds on new possibilities. Good on you! I have no doubt that you will nail it.

Loved as you spoke about arches and then went to your ARCHitect, lul. I also have an arc in my kitchen.
When I had renovated my house I was at the same situation as you. Demolition Day always looks like a catastrophe in the first place. But you will see it's like starting on a blank sheet of paper.
Can't wait to see the next videos

You’re my inspiration because you walked in two worlds (regular career and culinary arts). I’m a cooking guy. Keep up the great work.
