  • This is their DCF901, the big brother to the DCF902. I think it is a nice little impact wrench with adequate power but it is a bit overpriced compared to the 3/8" xtreme brushless impact and does not have any torque limiting modes which is a disappointment.

There is also a review out where the dewalt 20v dcf890 beats the dewalt 12v dcf901. I owned the dcf890 before the M12 stubby came out (the 890 didn't even come close to the stubby in real world results). I just ordered the dcf901 so I will find out if it actually does beat the m12 stubby. If dewalt ever steps it up and brings out 12v die grinders, 3" cutoff, polisher, ratchets, right angle impact, soldering iron, dremel, Etc. Etc. Etc. They could be in the mechanic game

I am seriously impressed. I had the other impacts on standby, but never needed them. I did need a spare battery and had to make due with a 2AH. My 890 wouldn't have needed a battery swap. @@idoit4urmom the problem is that DeWalt has their Mac Tools cordless lineup, so unfortunately all of the mechanic tools get pushed there to get mechanics to spend more money on Mac, even though the battery platform is the same. @@idoit4urmom if your talking bout driving the big lag by mastering mayhem my theory bout that is that is jus the raw 20v (18v) battery power jus outperforming a 12v due to a sustained long load. 12v battery prolly jus cant handle the load the same like driving lags. Breaking bolts loose is quick typically. I wonder if the 890 would beat this 12v in that.

Antonio, I am going to get the 12v 1/2”. I need to make 150 ft. Lbs for lug nuts. Was using the Freak and then finishing off with torque wrench. Would be nice to find a tool matched with a socket that gave out the torque I need without having to use a digital adapter or wrench to verify specs. Trial and error I suppose. I know the Milwaukee high torque with one key can repeat 150 over and over, but want small form factor.

@@paedahe4975 there is no tool on that planet that can do 150 repeating without some kind of electronic control and other thing is that makes it not possible is because depending on socket and if your using extentions or wobbles sockets or shallow or mid depth or deep sockets or even universal adapters or reducers or not they all change the amount of torque that to tool can put out but it would be nice if that was possible but at this time it's not.... and I would never recamend torqueing lug nuts with a impact I would always use a torque wrench....

Good information here. Great comparison between similar tools.
A lot of why I searched out this review is because I personally think DeWalt is approaching a total overhaul of their 1/4" impact drivers. And while this guy has a girthier motor and housing than the previous 12v 3/8” impact wrench (which is virtually identical in size and weight to their 12v 1/4" impact DRIVER) it is a bit shorter and provides more of a "stubby" appearance and use. I think that if you take a snapshot this tool - the 12v 1/2" impact wrench, and just Photoshop a 1/4" impact driver collet at the front of it, you'll have DeWalt's next generation impact driver form factor for their 20v line. I could be horribly wrong, but I personally believe their impact drivers are way overdue for a redesign resulting in a unit that competes (form factor-wise) with Milwaukee, Makita and (now) Flex's impact drivers that are more compact, more stubby and more ergonomic.
I have bought (and sold off) DeWalt's DCF887 and Atomic impact drivers. The ergonomics are lacking in comparison to their old brushed 885 - which I still have and prefer to use today. Anyway, just some thought.

TBH, the mode selection function would have been a gimmick on the 901. It's variable speed trigger combined with electronic motor speed control allows the user to manually control the speed and torque of the tool very well. The motor doesn't keep spinning like air impacts when the trigger is released. And letting off the trigger when the nut hits bottom while tightening stops the impacting immediately to prevent stripping, breaking, or over torquing.... just like the settings on the 902 function switch perform. No low speed switch is needed, because the speed is well controlled by your finger.
The 902 with the function switch is just about perfect for assembly work. The 901 is a simply a bigger hammer to grab for larger hardware and what the 902 can't break loose. And it's a great lug nut wrench for light trucks snd cars. The first thing I did when I got mine was rotate the tires on my car. It worked perfectly. But, tbh, the 902 with the 5ah battery now has enough power for my car and light truck lugs.
-looking forward to the teardown video!

There are so many things wrong with this video. Firstly it's an impact wrench not a driver. Can't compare driving deck screws between the 2 as number 1 impact drivers will always have more rpm's and ipm for obvious reasons. The target audience for these is automotive work hence the sub compact size. Pricewise I feel it is well worth the cost. Has more torque than the m12 stubby and is cheaper unless you find a deal. Dewalt is an awakening giant as we have now seen with the new Atomic series and DCF891 mid torque. I'm not hating on you just saying your comparisons are mis-guided in my opinion.

It all comes down to size. Everyone wants the most powerful and most compact & lightest tools available. Even though yes 18v is and always will be more powerful. But if the tool wont fit into the area needed then no matter the specs the tool has it becomes useless. And being lighter weight helps when the tool is used for a long period of time.

These are advertised for tight spots like suspension work and rotors, etc. I bought it for suspension work, ended up not doing the work. Instead did rotors and pads. The caliper bracket bolt wouldn't budge using this tool. I even thought I might have been tightening it, so I checked to make sure. I was not. I used my orange 3 pound dead blow and 2 whacks on my wrench and the bolt turned. I was VERY surprised at how easy it was to turn the bolt by hand. And equally disappointed in my new shiny yellow tool. The only saving grace for this tool is I didn't pay full price. If I had paid the MSRP, I'd be bringing it back.
