    My teacher in class argued that you didn't have to subtract the area of the base of that cone, but I knew I was right in saying that you did have to subtract it 😌. Thank you so much for this helpful video!

      @@millicentwilson9567 hi! I just knew you had to subtract the base, since it was no longer on the outer surface of the object. Surfaces are no longer surfaces to be counted in surface area once they are inside the structure.

      @@swoosh6801 Then why do you subtract it twice? When finding the formula you have to subtract it from the surface area of the cuboid AND the cone

      @@millicentwilson9567 good question, it’s because there are now two surfaces inside the structure: a circular patch from the rectangular prism and another circular patch from the bottom of the cone, so you have to subtract both interior surfaces ( which are now irrelevant) from the total surface area.

      @@swoosh6801 But you don't do that when you're finding the surface area of a barn or a house, or a loaf of bread either. You only subtract it by one shape rather than both. Why? Is it because one of the shapes are in half?

    Can someone please help.... I have a problem that makes no sense at all. "A zoning ordinance requires that any property with impervious coverage that discharges more than 100,000 gallons of water in a 4-inch rain storm must have a retention pond. The subject property will have 260,000 s.f. of impervious surface. A cubic foot of water contains 7.48 gallons and a retention ponds can hold no more than 500,000 gallons for safety reasons. What is the amount of water being displaced." Can some solve and explain, major thanks, (I'm using a HP12c calculator).

    Do you have to subtract the surface area of the triangle from the cone too or am I mistaken?? I'm sorry... it's a little complicated for me... hope you'll make me understand..

      no you just subtract the circle at the bottom of the cone because the surface area does not cover that
