We've got skittles vodka and are showing you how we made it. Not only that, we take on the challenge of filtering out all the candy floaties that take over your spirit. We're using the Aeropress Coffee Press, which you can find on Amazon.

@Baby Langga, I can't respond to you as you don't allow reply's via G+. But, anyway, you can try the candies, probably will work. But, experimentation is always best.
***** not a clue....buy it :)
I have a sure way to avoid the white goo problem.
1. Put on rubber gloves so the colour don't stick to your fingers
2. Slowly cut every Skittle in halves with a very sharp knife
3. Scoop out the entire gooey centre with a dentist drill
4. Put the empty Skittle shells in the vodka bottles
Voilà! The first ten or twenty Skittle will take you about one and a half hours each to scoop out but with some practice, you can do the job in about 30 to 45 minutes per Skittle. Of course, this project will take about 6 months but think of all the filtering time you will save. Enjoy!
sir r u on drugs?
A dentist drill 😭😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
😂😂
Just squish the skittles with your fingers to open them, why a knife?
made some skittles vodka but 6/7 months ago... took them to work and the patrons loved them... especially when i used them in my onw personal martinis.... the skittle shooter topped with my homemade alcohol infused whip cream was the most popular.... great video...
Love the colors! Those will look soooo good on the booze shelf. A definite eye-catcher. Gotta try this even if it is a bit laborous.
Thanks for the tutorial! Very thorough and clear.
Just a quick tip for anyone else wating to make their own and for Derrick too, Placing the bottle or jar in the dishwasher or sitting in a pot with some almost simmering water will dissolve almost all of the "stuff" that needs to be filtered, saving both time and coffee filters, give it a go
I know Louisiana sells liquors in grocery stores in various sizes. You can usually grab your alcohol from the shelf as if you we're preparing to purchase soda, unless you need a specific size. There's usually a customer service section in grocery stores that provide cigarettes and other tobacco products as well as larger quantities of alcohols. I hope this helps.
I've done it a couple of times now. One of the times we bought a "cheap" danish vodka. The orange lost its colour. Second time we bought a Smirnoff vodka and tried the Skittles Sour. The orange was more perfect. We did loose a lot of the fluid though because of the coffee filters absorbed so much of it. Really thinking about buying that aeropress from amazon. I really think that you've made them sell more. BTW. This is the best how to video I've ever seen! Best subscription ever!
I used a mix of strawberry, grape, & orange to make it. I didn't use as much candy as u did but it turned out pretty good. Then I mixed it with Alize, yum
I used paper towels. Not a single itty bitty little flake of white gunk was left. Cheap and it does the job. Just fold it into a make-shift funnel and you're all set. You'll probably have to replace it quite often since they stop letting the vodka through after a while, so don't put too much of the liquid in at any time.
...I'm impatient and I've squeezed the paper towels to get the little bit of leftover liquid out, and it still worked like a charm.
During my teenage years I discovered that the water content of wine will begin to crystallize after an hour in a deep freeze. And so increase the alcohol concentration of the renaming liquid.
Remove the ice. Repeat until no ice forms. Might work with plain vodka poured onto an aluminum baking tray in the deep freeze.
I just wanted to share two things;
1) I tried a brita water filter to see how it tastes and what I got was a higher quality vodka with full flavor. I used taaka and it lost the burn it would've had versus a coffee filter.
2) I found a quicker way to filter out the skittle vodka. I used a Mr. Coffee Gold tone coffee filter. It was great cause i would pour into it and as it filled with junk, it was just a quick wash and back to filtering i was. It may have been more labor intensive, but it was better than waiting all day.
brita "charcoal" filtering will increase quality, yes.
I love making these and then drinking the vodka straight or making some great mixes, the blue skittles were the best in my opinion
awesome! this is definitely at the top of my purchasing list when I start doing infusions.
Well made video. Thanks for sharing.
This looks so good
Good video man. You really know what you're doing.
first time i did it. i took it for fun. make some cocktails. take pics & uploaded them to my facebook page & my like page. Some of the customers did pay me to make them personal skitttles vodka & other infusions for household use. @work. the owner paid me to make it there at the bar & he would give me a % of the sales from skittles vodka. i never accepted it cause i did it for fun. Plus always got great tips. so he applied it to my weekly check. lol
true. ive done alot of different candy infusions after the skittles vodka. another popular one i do is the lemon head vodka or the lemon drop candy vodka. Theyre both great as a shot or in a martini. Have you tried infusing those?
I really wish i knew about the aeropress before now.....my straining system is/was ridiculous, i used multiple coffee filters, cheesecloth and even a brita filter to get all the gunk out.....i will be making a purchase on amazon soon....
This is true. Regular filters are the least efficient way to filter infused vodka. I'm not even sure how coffee gets through the filters now, because that vodka just crawls along.
Yeah fair enough, love the show. Greetings from Brisbane, Australia
cant wait for the tasting :)
Wow, thumbs up for actually going through that long and tedious filter process! How'd it taste?
We do this in finland, only with Salmiakki (Salty liquorice) It's called salmari or salmiakki vodka :p Quite tasty, many non Finnish/Nordic people don't like salty liquorice though.
It took about an hour to filter everything, and later I ran all of them back through the French press another 5 times, but that was really quick, but it took another 15-20 minutes or so.
We're going to design some drinks around the flavors we have so,
Having some extra on hand will be good for experimentation, I suppose.
Mr. Schommer, you are awesome.
60Dollars for that much vodka?! weeew thats cheap!
exactly what I was thinking. I'm using belvedere and its $128 for what I need
MrChittyChad single 700ml bottle of absolute vodka here in Australia is $40 on special lol fml
Used to make ricotta cheese and would use a cheesecloth, not sure if that would work for your skittle thing but i'd try it first because air-thing seems painstaking
you know whats good is to infuse vodka with tea and some sugar and then mix with lemonade! thats all i drink in the summer!!
So a Arnold Palmer with alcohol.
yea i guess, theres no ice tea in it, just half lemonade and half "ice tea flavored" vodka. u could always just buy the seagrams hard tea vodka but i like making my own..
wowzas! Well I'm not even old enough to drink and am still subscribed and watch almost every video so you must be doing something right! :D
From when some of my friends did this, they used coffee filters and keurig coffee machine for it There are some nice filters for that. This seems like a MUCH better idea though.
ok. just wanted to see if it would work, thanks for the video by the way:)
I think I will try this.. :) Thanks for the video!
That is a brilliant idea
this guy seems mad fun to hang out with
Sorry i should have specified, i put it in a pot with more "warm" water than simmering, the heat simply helps to dissolve the sugar into the vodka, similar to making simple syrup just on a very low heat
u can always use a regular coffee filter and funnel, rinse and repeat and works fine :D
Also jolly rancher vodka is great to make too!!!
already made a video on it :)
I would suggest making jolly rancher vodka instead of skittles if any one is planning it. It doesn't require any straining and tastes the same if not better! just speaking from experience, good video still! cheers.
we did that for a part everyone loved them for mixed drinks.
The "White Particles" is Vegetable Gum in the skittles. It is very important to get it out of the vodka. When I make it I leave it for a few days and let the Skittles dissolve completely. Always a great party drink.
this is awesome! really want to try this - but it DOES look like a pain! i tried making my own iced coffee (basically same process) and it was absolutely horrible getting all the coffee grounds to filter out - looks like an AeroPress is in my future!
filter it through an old white (clean, of course) tshirt over a sieve+bowl, it does the same job as the coffee filter except it does it all in one shot
The stuff you do for us! Thank you.
Hey, Derrick I am a big fan of your love the way you make the cocktails. I followed your recipe it turned out to be good. I was wondering would it be a good idea to mix crushed ice tonic water and all the different flavors of Vodka?
Guys and girls please reply
Got round to watching Stargate Atlantis earlier this year, gives the original a run for it's money and I think the characters make the show.
i'm also going to try pouring it in a large mason jar and then skim the top with a skimmer... I'll see which method is more effective :D
this is cool, im gonna try this with my cheap polish vodka dworek!
This would be cool with the new Skittles Darkside flavors. The flavors are blood orange, forbidden fruit, midnight lime, pomegranate and dark berry.
Derrick you are the Best!!!!
Awe, so glad I found this channel.
The colors looks awesome. How does it taste?
Has anyone else had the problem of the filtering process taking out the colour?
I've left them to dissolve for just under 24 hours and I've tried filtering through a paper coffee filter (I have no time to pick up one of those magical aeropress things!) And it's coming out practically clear! Please help!
+Tony Ball no, never seen that, although they do discolor over time (esp. purple)
use more skittles
Last time I made skittles vodka we put the skittles in and shook the bottles until the outer coloured coating had dissolved, then filtered the little white residue that was left over
lol the ad youtube ran before this skittles vodka video was an ad for skittles!
finally they're figuring out how to run relevant ads! i'm just so happy the stupid election is over and no more scott brown / elizabeth warren (MA race) ads before every single YT video i watched.
You wanna know a funny thing.
One bottle of 700ml Absolut vodka in sweden costs 36,19$
And it's produced in Sweden as well, it's actually cheaper to go to or order from germany.
Then the price is about 24$ for 1Liter.
Can you sell me a big bag of those skittles? Aha Frickin love skittles! :P keep up the great cocktails!
Dude you're such a pro... and little bit too pro -- meaning OCD...? Haha great job!
thanks
Thanks for answering! I just filtered my skittles/jolly ranchers tonight! They'll go into the freezer. Later I'll "taste test." I didn't calculate the alcohol quite right, still have grape to infuse. I also am trying to track down "clear jars with screw lids" instead of corks! I think people will love this Christmas gift:)
Do you think that the steel filter disk that you bought for the press, is better than the paper ones? I used; 1 big coffee filter, then 3 small paper filters, for each color!
what about a metal sifter to strain? or even sifter/coffee filter combo?
I'm up tp the last ep of SGA - bit annoyed it got canned, so haven't watched the last ep for about 6 months. I'm weird like that.
Good show.
What about a regular coffee press? Like the ones you would use for loose coffee powder
Also, ice filtering is best done with a wire mesh sieve. The type used in baking.
We're doing this for Saint Patricks day can't wait!
Ohh and bad ass Optimus Prime Truck in the begining of the video awesome XD!!!!
So gonna try this
The third filtration didnt do anything. The paper filter is much finer than the steel filter. So using the steel alone after using the paper does nothing. You should have used the paper filter twice.
use coffee filter in the coffee pot. works like a charm
Would it not be possible to just spoon the white gunk off the top? Since it all rises that just seems to make sense to me (assuming you let it sit still for a few days)
you should try it though :oo it's got quite a unique taste compared to your run-of-the-mill liqor/flavoured vodka.
i did it whit GREEN MONSTER. so good taste
regular paper coffee filter works. Just filter it twice! cheap and easy!
11:20 the last pass it said steal filter shouldn't it be steel? lol this filter makes it look so much easier I think I might need to get one!
Never stop man
It would cost over 80e here in Finland but thank god we can go to Estonia anytime and buy cheap Eesti stantard vodka or Viru valge 5e (0.5l) :)
It probably won't work well if you add a lot of sugars before you deep freeze the vodka. It will become too thick to filter out the ice.
Deep freeze plain vodka, filter out ice. Then add flavorings.
I'd buy it, it make filtering waxy contaminants easier.
In England it costs about 25pound (which is roughly the same in euros) per a litre. But i recently went to andora and it cost 8 euros per litre!
Its great to!
how long did that whole sorting and putting the skittles in the bottles and refilling the vodka process take?
I really like your videoes. You're interesting. Keep up the good work!
Skip the filtration leave them in the fridge for about a week in glass bottles and the skittles have completely dissolved
Looks good but is it worth the work ?? ive heard mixxed opinions on the skittles vodka.. and ive seen the jolly ranchers one.... i havent tried either.... how ever i personally would imagine the skittles would be more tasty than the jolly ranchers.. but.. theres no blue so thats one thing i like about the rachers..
would this work just as well for filtering freshly squeezed lemon juice?
GREAT VIDEO! Love the attention to detail. One question though... it seems to me that when you are initially pouring the completed "steep" into the first stage of filtration, you could pour off a whole lot of the white goo BEFORE you start filtering and maybe make the whole thing a little bit easier? Any reason not to do that? I guess you would lose about an ounce of vodka, but maybe it's worth it?
What other things could I use to filter this? Could a sifter work?
yum! I just found your videos now I'm on a video splurge. I wish I could make all these drinks! :P
ive seen over vids on making this. and the comments say that the vodka doesnt tast that good. so its not worth the time to make it? so im interested to know if your method makes it tast better. I dont wanna invest all the time and effort if it doesnt taste much better.
must be buzzed, I actually flinched when he threw the paper towel
Cool! Do you think that steel filter for the press was worth the price? Just need an opinion cause I can't decide if I should get it or not. :/
Brilliant video
thanks
Just found ya. Love the videos! U kept my attention!! Thanks
I used 7 filters for one cup of the infusion- 1 big coffee filter to get the big stuff and that was quick and got most of it, then, 6 Aero filters. STILL got a bit of white residue in the bottom!:( I was hoping for none. Wonder if it could be a "paper dust?" I'll use one with clear alcohol and see if anything ends up in it! Then, I'll rinse one really well and try it and see if anything is there. "Experimentation!" lol
I've been wondering (have no clue if this would taste good) .....but would KoolAid and sugar added to Voddy work??
Would surly be much less effort also.....
I know the Skittles taste won't be had ....but it does open things up for more flavours!
You know ....I'm gonna go try this out ....and I'm gonna go with Grape 😆👍
that would work if you're into hangover inducing college drinks, but it wouldn't be the same as what is being made here.
coffee filters in say a funnel will clog and take hours....with more surface area, as in using a coffee filter in a medium sized strainer, it takes no time at all and filters just the same its just more surface area...
i just bouth them in Bosnia and Herzegovina near Croatia in Middle EU it coste me 2$ and 5 bottles of absolut vodka each for 6$ and im going to make it with this tutorial :D anway its cheap and good i tasted it in my friend he made it from the same tutorial and i like id ... i have question i want to make them for New Year is it possible to make them now and leave them somewhere in house with good temperature away from sunlight or ... ill make them 48h before newyear :D tnx and keep up with ;)
Makes sense, the way the skittles seem to make the vodka more cloudy also makes me assume the flavor of the skittles is a bit more soft tasting than the JR's .. Im not really into very strong tasting drinks.. im a "fruity" type of guy
I have a question it maybey a stupid question but ones you made the skittles vodka is their an experation date? Does the taste get bad after a while if so how long can you let it stay before you drink it. Sorry for bad english i hope you understood my question im subsribing btw
I live in the uk and cant find a steel filter anywhere any suggestions ... where did you get yours from
I'm making this to take to my friend's birthday party!
I put blue and green jolly rancher chews into one bottle it came out aquamarine green like an Easter egg
