Honestly there are too many Muslim brothers now who mistreat women and don’t understand the ruling of the polygyny. This is very informative for any muslim brothers who might feel misguided, and inshallah for any Muslim sisters who fall under the western belief systems like feminism, when Allah (SWT) words are perfect and has provided the women of our beautiful ummah with rights. Alhamdulilah
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim. This is incorrect according to all 4 of the great Imams and consensus of the sahaba, this is American revisionism at work and I'll prove it: 1. Clarifying the Meaning of “Justice” in Polygamy Financial and Temporal Justice: Traditional scholars, such as Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, agreed that justice between wives means providing equally for them in terms of finances (such as housing, clothing, and sustenance) and time (fair distribution of nights spent with each wife). This “justice” does not imply equal love or emotional attachment, which are acknowledged as beyond human control. This is not impossible to achieve, as evidences by widespread practice and recommendation of these practice, not just in war time either. This matter is very clearly described by early scholars. Qur’anic Support: The verse in question (Surat An-Nisa 4:3) calls for justice in practical, material aspects, not an unattainable equality of feelings. Allah later affirms in Surat An-Nisa 4:129, “You will never be able to do perfect justice between wives even if it is your ardent desire...” Scholars interpret this verse to mean Allah understands the limitations of human hearts and calls only for equal treatment in external actions. There is consensus about this, only orientalists tried to change this recently in order to harm Islam. 2. The Practical Application of Justice in Polygamous Marriages Examples from the Prophet ﷺ: The Prophet ﷺ had multiple wives, and his approach serves as a practical example of how justice in a polygamous marriage is applied. While he showed a preference for Aisha (RA) emotionally, he divided his time and resources equally among all his wives. Responsibilities of Each Party: Traditional Islamic teachings assign both rights and responsibilities to each spouse. For instance: The husband is responsible for providing for his wives financially and ensuring they have adequate housing and support. Wives, in turn, have specific responsibilities toward the household and are encouraged to contribute positively to the family environment. She isn't simply a queen in the home and the husband is her slave, like in America. This balance maintains a harmonious structure rather than placing a disproportionately heavy burden on the husband or requiring him to meet modern interpretations that align with Western ideals rather than Islamic principles. 3. Refuting Misinterpretations about Financial Independence False Claim of Absolute Financial Independence: Modern revisionists suggest that each wife must be made completely financially independent, which implies the husband must provide a separate income for each wife, akin to making her a “queen of the house” with minimal responsibilities. This contradicts traditional understandings where a man provides essential support without requiring him to meet extreme standards beyond his means. The Four Great Imams’ View: None of the four Imams interpreted “justice” to mean making each wife financially independent. Rather, they emphasized that the husband must meet essential needs according to his financial ability and ensure fair treatment, not extravagant or excessive provision. And the wife is dependent on the husband, and furthermore she follows and obeys him, and this was clear from the hadiths as well. 4. The Sahaba’s Practice as a Historical Precedent Widespread Acceptance and Practice: Polygamy was a common and accepted practice among the Sahaba, who saw it as permissible and even recommended, provided a man could manage the financial and temporal responsibilities. There was no notion of making each wife financially independent or requiring the husband to perform household chores beyond Islamic norms. Evidence of Consensus: There is a strong scholarly consensus (Ijma’) on the permissibility of polygamy, and it was never considered only for a few elite individuals. It was widely recommended and prevented adultery and made large families. Revisionists who suggest that polygamy is nearly impossible contradict the unanimous agreement of the early Muslims, which is a form of disbelief. 5. Addressing Modernist Arguments and their Consequences Distortion of Islamic Principles: Attempting to impose modern, feminist-oriented standards onto Islamic teachings distorts the balance Allah established in marriage, where both husband and wife have roles that complement each other. This approach misrepresents the structure that Allah has prescribed for the family. Dangerous Consequences of Misinterpretation: Insisting that polygamy is nearly impossible due to unrealistic expectations risks alienating Muslims from the Prophetic tradition, undermining their understanding of marital roles, and fostering resentment rather than balance within families. This is worshipping feminism, but Islam. 6. Conclusion Encouragement of Balance and Practical Justice: Traditional Islamic teachings encourage a balanced view where justice in polygamy is achievable and reasonable. It is not meant to be a restrictive or overly burdensome institution. Allah’s legislation of polygamy is a mercy, meant to support society and provide structure, rather than an unrealistic expectation designed to discourage its practice.

My understanding is that it is better to marry one woman as some men would have difficulty being just or fair in their treatment. However, in the past many prophets did have more than one wife. So I also feel it can not be concluded as only marry one but is an advisory to most men, as some would not have the ability or means to treat equitably.
You are correct. To avoid the possibility of not treating your wives equitably or fairly, it is better to marry one. But if a person feels that they he can be just & fair, then Allah makes it permissible to do so. Only Allah knows best.
