Doc died in Cars 3 because the actor, Paul Newman, passed away in 2008, which is also why Doc wasn’t in Cars 2

My absolute favorite theory is that due to Sarge being a Jeep it implies there was a Cars WW2.

The movie Planes with Dane Cook literally has the Battle of Midway. Same universe.

okay Aaron here’s another thing that REALLY irritated me about Cars 3, is how Sally was literally NOT PRESENT. AT ALL. I could NOT figure out what the story they were trying to tell at first, I was like oh are Sally and McQueen DONE? But no they’re not she’s just literally forgotten. she’s THERE, but she’s just like… muted? like wtf happened to Sally.
Everyone from Radiator Springs is missing. Mack is more present here than Sally which is insane. AND DOC WHO IS DEAD.
At least they’re still together. 😂
@@CommandaInChiefLol. Yeah, true, that'd feel like you wouldn't wanna rewatch the first because it'd feel pointless and not wholesome.
If I had to guess, it probably had more to do with the availability or lack thereof of the actress who played Sally.
Their dialogue together kind of carries heavy vibes or inconclusive implications that they're married.
But yeah, she's disappointingly not a significant character to Lightning's story in Cars 3.
cars 3 feels like they tried doing a similar "passing the torch" theme but did it in a surface level way. Cars 1 also feels like a love letter to old americana and the racing indrustry so it feels like it was made with more love and attention to detail
Cars 3 was directed to a much more sophisticated group of people to establish a deeper meaning about our trifling issue of Tradition Vs. Modernity. You can really analyze this part in the begging where all his traditional car racers are being taken out of the racing industry, due to the use of modern technological advances in racing. Furthermore, as we realize later on there are skills that get forgotten as time continues shown when Mcqueen and Cruz get taught by smokey. However, it is only until the end of the movie it is then that we can realize with the amalgamation of both Tradition and Modernity you will succeed. It's such an amazing theme being put into a basic movie aimed for children to consume. Having this also be an issue prevalent currently in Israel and Palestine shows how brave cars 3 was for also providing a solution to this issue. If you haven't seen this film for some time watch it and you can find the depth it goes into about such topics.
I remember talking to my brother about this a few years ago, considering he loved Cars and got me into it. I was saying how this movie is more about how America has deteriorated in terms of what it was at its core and how it’s essentially hanging on by a thread, and is somewhat making a comeback
@@slickcashew4921 is this sarcasm? Its hard to tell without facial expressions.
@@flowcade6997 At first it was until I went deep into the rabbit hole that was to await me.
@@k.b.5079 The ironic part is the car industry has a large part to do with the lasting effects on America today... not the jobs that left, but the infrastructure, dependency and socioeconomic status that dug us into a pretty bad pit today...
I never got the “why’d do they have to be cars” argument because they don’t ask this question with zootopia or kung fu panda. They’re cars cause it’s fun just like those movies have anthropomorphic animals cause it’s fun
Edit: the only anthro movie I could maybe give a pass is zootopia but at the same time they allegory they try to set doesn’t work imho. Lastly I’m still right about the majority of anthro movies, most can be told with human but they’re not cause animals are more fun.
Probably because everything that the anthropomorphic cars contribute to the story can be presented by….people in cars. Zootopia has the whole commentary of the predators vs prey in society and wolf in sheeps clothing corruption blah blah blah, however Cars could just as easily and effectively have been a story about a NASCAR driver who ends up in a small town en route, meets the residents and former NASCAR champion who live there, has a big shot to small town story arc, and then has the championship race at the end.
All we would have lost is the car puns and car accessible architecture
THANK YOU! That argument always pisses me off. Whenever I hear that I always think "You better keep that same energy for other movies like Toy Story and others." No hate to those movies, but it's just unfair to me.
Bad comparison. In Zootopia world is build around the different animals, while Cars is 1:1 humans stand-in.
Take pisston cup joke as example. I understand that was the best 3 second long joke ever created but why a car would ask that? Do Cars piss? Do cars have to piss? Our cars do have oil, would pissing car stand as analogy for oil change or do they still need to drink water?
Cars in Cars are not integral to their world. Cars is Cars are only integral to car puns.
@@dziewiaty Cars do piss. For example in Cars 2, at the Tokyo party, Axelrod was leaking oil on stage and blamed it on Mater. And when Mater left, there were restrooms.
@@bobbyscibadee while you just won an argument and are 100% right I am still mad an animated movie about vehicles made me question how a car would piss for a rest of a movie
Is McQueen's arc generic? Cocky to humble? Yeah, sure. But was it done well and more about the journey anyway? Absolutely.
I recently watched Cars again for the first time in like 12 years and was blown away by how good it was. It was one of those childhood staples that I watched on repeat (had lots of nostalgia on my recent watch tbh) but I NEVER picked up on the genius character moments and other things in this movie. Not to mention all the setups and payoffs that I could likely count on three hands. Solid movie with more heart than I expected, plus great morals.
I miss this era of Pixar. Real Gone is a mood.
Just because something is generic, that doesn't mean it's bad. It just means it has to be better than the competition.
Except it wasn’t generic? It was one of the first of its time. The only movie that had the same but similar story was Doc Hollywood. It just seems generic because you’ve seen so many movies since then.
I’ve been trying to non ironically tell people it’s about the journey when it comes to Lightnings arc since 2006 lol
it's not generic it's cliche
TRUE, I didn't think of that. I wonder how it was talked about back in 2006 before the market got larger and such?@@jaycemcqueen306
my favorite line in cars is from the scene when mcqueen gets doxxed and all the paparazzi show up, theres this one guy who asks "is it true you've been in rehab!?" lmaoo i was hoping you would mention that
lmaoooo how did I never catch that?
@christcarscountry6870 no idea but you have to rewatch that part, its kills me everytime
The opening scene of Cars 1 is genuinely one of the best scenes I've ever seen as an aspiring filmmaker. It does so much right. It introduces you to this big complicated universe in such a quick and concise way. Aside from the amazing soundtrack, the way that Cars 1 introduces itself is almost perfect. Also it's just a fun scene!
I also like the subtle B or maybe C plot of how Radiator Springs went the way of the ghost town due to the interstate highway system. It's a nice commentary on how car culture and infrastructure actually helped to hollow out rural/middle America into a shell. Tons of people and culture we're left behind simply because they weren't where the wealth was, so people left to the cities and the coasts, creating a feedback loop. Radiator Springs recovers only because McQueen put some spotlight on them.
Cars is the reason why I want to do road trips across America with no Interstate travel and see what I come up on. Two lane blacktop from coast-to-coast or border-to-border.
I literally put this in my APUSH essay about the same topic, didn't do too bad either
I understand your points on Cars 3 from a writing perspective, and there are some pretty major flaws to get past, I really don't disagree. But as someone who loves NASCAR, a lot of Cars 3 (for better or worse) is a nod to the culture of stock car racing. The scene at the dirt track is a nod to where the racers of old and even today would cut their teeth. A lot of the training montages are references to things from NASCAR's history, like the beach representing the original Daytona Beach course. Several of the characters introduced in the third movie are references to historic drivers. And, although it doesn't make nearly as much sense in the Cars universe, the "whoever starts the race gets credit for the win" rule is a real rule in NASCAR (check out the story of Aric Almirola and Denny Hamlin as a real life example of this). There are plenty of other nods, so much of this movie is for NASCAR fans, and as a NASCAR fan I absolutely love it. None of this is meant to take away from your points by the way, I still agree with pretty much all of them. I was just trying to maybe shed a little different light on some of the "why"s around Cars 3 to help it make a little more sense. And I love how you don't even count Cars 2 because I don't either 😂
Came here to talk about the switching cars out thing. But saw someone else had already explained it. Since the racing in cars 1 and 3 is heavily based on specifically NASCAR’s cup series. In NASCAR switching drivers does happen and is very rare but as mentioned the points in the rankings at the end of the season go to one of the cars drivers for the race. As for why it is t done irl in nascar. Time. Also same reason it wouldn’t be done in cars.
Theoretically I imagine if this were done more often in cars there would be rules in place to handle treating it like a relay that would discourage this being a common practice
However a big reason it’s not done in NASCAR is time even if a driver is waiting in the wings to replace a current driver the process of a driver removing the safety equipment enough to get out of the car and the other driver having to get into the car and having all the remaining safety gear put in place takes so much extra time that unless there is a very very good reason drivers will rarely if ever switch mid race as at minimum it will usuially put them at the end of the lead lap and often would put them at least a lap down. In anything short of a super speedway.
I believe the idea was to mimick this kind of mid race driver change as it results in nascar on a super speedway track during a caution lap.
It makes some sense irl because they're not switching cars, switching drivers doesn't give too much of an advantage and potentially just give the team a disadvantage as @bc1284 alluded. But in the Cars universe the rule is indeed a giant loophole that anyone would've exploited.
The movie really had to do the _"flips over the wall and win"_ bs we've been seeing out of some family friendly oval racing movie that came out in the past few decades; Herby Fully Loaded, hell even racing snail movie Turbo did it. As a non-American it just annoys the hell out of me.
Further highlighting its stupidity
Only one thing I can appreciate about Cars 2 was it's animation quality and CGI effects, they are top notch but storyline is aSS 😅
I think them visiting Smokey was the best part of the whole movie
The reason why Doc isn’t in the second or third movie is because the actor that played him passed away in 2008.
Even then, Doc IS in the third film, they had unused dialogue from the actor
That actor was no other than Paul Newman, he was also a racer, Doc was his last role before retiring, after a 5 decade career in Hollywood, Cars is the reason of why I got into Paul Newman's filmography, and also Steve McQueen indirectly, tho he has nothing to do with Cars, he just shared the last name and was also a racer (movies like The Great Escape, Le Mans and Bullit are lit), McQueen and Newman only did one movie together, The Towering Inferno, worth checking out.
Rust in peace, Doc.
@@pidopero8545Rest in peace, Paul Newman, as well.
The Brazilian Voice actor passed away too
The cars aren’t human, but they hold the place of humans. So my theory about the little flying cars is that they are holding the place not of baby cars, but another species entirely; they are little personified bees. Thank you for hearing my theory
beetle
They’re so obviously bugs I cringed when he called them baby cars
He knew they were bugs, but he was saying that it's weird that bugs are represented by tiny ("baby") cars and not tiny ("baby") planes instead.
But… why is it weird? They’re Volkswagen beetles. Literally “bugs.” It’s just a pun.
They are Volkswagen bugs, it’s that simple lol
Doc CARRIES this movie. I remember as a kid everyone loving McQueen and having McQueen merch, and I was the only one who steadfastly loved Doc and not McQueen or Mater. I still firmly believe that character is responsible for my passion for classic cars and my crippling financial addiction to daily driving a 60 year old Ford.
I was the same with Doc and The King!!! I loved them both so much
Doc's the goat. Kickstarted my young appreciation for old school American dirt track racing. Also sent me down the rabbit hole of why the ACTUAL Hudson Hornet's were so fast in the 50's and apparently they had some (for the time) high tech chassis and pretty beefy engines.
Sick that you daily an antique
Old cars just have a really unique look that no modern car can replicate. I love old cars, they're great!
@@MariTheMenace thanks!
you have so many iconic lines in this video im crying laughing
“get out bitch!!”
“you were da… you were da baby!”
He did what in his cup
The thing where they swap out drivers is actually something that happens in nascar, Aric Almirola started an Xfinity series race and mid race swapped out with Denny Hamlin, NASCAR’s rule is that the points/win goes to the driver who STARTED in the car, Denny Hamlin won the race but Almirola was credited because he was the starter
people thinking Pixar wouldn't know this is pretty surprising. They got actual racing enthusiasts to work on the movie inside and out. Of course they would know that. How it was handled is a valid criticism, though
A race Aric will never like to be reminded about even if the rumors of him being a Gibbs driver next year are true
Most motor sports use multiple drivers, nothing new
The problem is that the cars in Cars are... the cars. You know? Swapping cars negates the effect of pit stops, damage, etc. With these sorts of rules in effect, McQueen could've avoided the tie in the first movie by letting someone else take his place for the last lap instead of blowing out his tires.
@@suarezfan99They ended up being true! Aric is splitting an Xfinity ride with John Hunter next season
“luigi and guido meeting a ferrari” U MEAN MICHAEL SCHUHMACHER

@@Ryzard Same. I disliked how much he shat on cars 3, because he took the entire thing at such a base level. My biggest gripe though; is how is it cars 3's fault that Doc isn't in it? The voice actor passed in 2008. And even then, he still was kinda there as they used unused voicelines already recorded. I think he hates cars 3 so much because of his attachment to cars 1. If it isn't just like cars 1 and perfect in every regard compared to it, then it's a dogwater movie. And for cars 2 that was understandable, but cars 3 had to do the best with what they had. One of the lead characters voice actors was dead, and they had to retcon the entire second movie

I really like how Cars portrays a small town that has lost its income. I can sort of relate that to the town in Sweden I live in. There used to be a train station here, but got shutdown in 80s. As of late it seems to me, that the Pixar movies that have criticism for capitalism are the ones we've grown to love even more as adults such as Ratatouille, but it seems many have forgotten the first Cars movie had that as well. It really highlights gentrification, value, and what many places in the world have lost because they're not seen as desirable anymore. You are so right Aaron about how the characters in the small town are more down to earth and how likable it makes them, which also feels realistic.
It kinda reminds me of my country Venezuela, look at the pictures of our capitol Caracas in the 1950s, we looked like an american city, even if the country was living under a dictatorship, but the president really wanted to modernize the country, many of those structures are still in, including a whole university. We were the envy of Latin America, that's why many inmigrants after WW2 came here in search of opportunities, even americans liked to live here (mainly because of oil fields), but then socialism arrived in 1998 when Hugo Chávez became president, there are still some fine things, but we became a 2nd Cuba.
So I kinda relate to the Radiator Springs storyline, a town in middle of the desert, which around the 50s and 60s was in it's prime, many wanted to go there, but they build another roads, so everyone forgot about 'em, some stayed because they had faith that things would get better.
1:24 it was for the joke that the little bugs are Volkswagen Beetles, which are often called Bugs. So as a kid I knew why the flies were tiny cars even though there were planes.
23:45 also on this you have to know a bit about the sport of racing. There are no individual winners, the team wins. Not too familiar with Nascar rules, but in other endurance races drivers swap out. So if the second driver finishes and wins the race it’s a victory for the team.
The first movie was so endearing and I just loved it. I saw it in theaters with my grandma and we’ve always enjoyed it. Not to mention growing up in Colorado and being to close to Wyoming it reminded me a lot of home. The scenery in Radiator springs was beautifully done! LOVE this movie!
It's good how Doc and Mcqueen both teach each other. Mcqueen learns the importance of caring about other people, and Doc learns how to enjoy the racing again.
It’s nice to see a childhood favourite get some love
Yes
Doc's death was talked about in 2. Its always been swept under the rug. There is a deleted scene where Sterling takes the data from McQueen and Cruz's road trip adventure thing and says that she was out performing him at everything and that she'll take over the ride for the race. I think that would've worked better. At that point just flesh out that shes excelling at the training more than Lightning. Flesh out lightning and make him see that shes doing super well at it and surpassing him. Have her start the race, but she's scared just like she is in the movie. Instead Sterling has a "professional crew" step in as her team. Lightning is watching from the sidelines or while leaving dejected and is pledding that she shows what shes made of. Sterling is yelling at her on the radio, and at this point Lightning races to the box to talk to Cruz and settles her down and becomes her crew chief.
"a ferrari" as if that wasn't THE michael schumacher
I like Cars 3 but I think most of your criticism of it is valid.
If Cars 2 had never happened and Cars 3 was the second Cars movie instead, I probably wouldn't like it as much as I do.
If Cars 2 never happened I wouldn't be into the series.
@@JRS06 A little cousin of mine thought the same.

I kinda see your point as we watch the end of Cars 1 we’d be like “Wow! McQueen became a really good person AND has a great racing career ahead of him! I sure hope we get to see him gradually get more and more wins!” and then suddenly Cars 3 happened as the actual sequel and people are gonna be like “What? We just saw him as a rookie in the first film! Now he’s already a veteran and passing the torch to someone else?!”. A trilogy would be best for Cars if Cars 2 wasn’t mostly about Mater and the whole spy stuff and we see McQueen see how not every strategy he uses can apply for different tracks…
same
ohhhh im here for this shit. thank you for defending my childhood 🫡💕💃
22:55 that’s actually such an amazing point because it would then call back to Lightning’s ego in the first movie and would’ve shown what he would’ve become without radiator springs. Thanks this is my head canon for how cars ends. Lightning realizes that just like before it’s not all about him and teaches Doc’s techniques to the next generation and because of his humility and Storm’s hubris, Lightning’s protege is able to win with the true message from the first movie that winning isn’t everything and that some stuff is bigger than yourself. I like your cars 3 better
And you definitely saved me from just watching cars 3 randomly one day and getting pissed so I appreciate it
You know how Storm said to his crew chief, "And how far back is she now?" They could have had him say, "Checkered flag, here I come!"
Doc was dead by the beginning of Cars 2, due to the actor (Paul Newman) passing away in 2008, the piston cup season was rebranded in homage to him as seen in the beginning of act 1 of the movie
Cars 1 was made to remember a Bygone time in America. When Americans had a love affair with the automobile and the cross country road trip where half the fun is getting to your destination. The Pixar team went on a road trip on old Route 66 in prep for this movie so a lot of the elements of Radiator Springs are inspired by actual places they visited along the way.

I'm one of the few fans who actually enjoyed the Cars 2 movie. But the thing about it is it doesn't feel like it belongs in the car franchise, but I feel like it's a great generic spy movie. And it's hilarious and a whole lot of fun. I just really love Francesco as a character too much.

I agree! I think the whole reason I like it is because it’s a spy theme and I like watching anything that feels mystery/spy themed. Yes it feels off from the franchise but I still like it
Cars 2 has a great animation, kinda releastic when they show London, Tokyo, Italy(Forgot the city name) and Paris from birds view.

in one of the early drafts for cars 3 there was a scene of doc dying while racing McQueen, doc died happy teaching the one who brought joy back to his life and doing the thing he loved most which was coaching and racing against McQueen
Doc died off screen because the actor died. Hyper realistic environment is basically just an opinion. I think the hyper realistic looks fine. you say Cruz was unlikable but I didn't get that from her initially. She was right about basically everything she said and McQueen's character was butchered and reset back to not listening and doing everything himself.
You have earned my everlasting respect and subscription for valiantly defending my favorite childhood movie
Cars was one of my favourite childhood movies. Thank you for defending it
The whole training arc wasn't about McQueen prepping for his race, but McQueen realizing that he was subconsciously training Cruz instead. Which is why she was able to compete with the other Piston Cup racers. I don't think Cars 3 is a bad movie, but I do agree that it lacks that "Radiator Springs" charisma. I feel like the whole mega-corporate theme with Sterling buying Rust-eze is unnecessary.

Thank you SO much for this video Aaron!! Cars 1 is one of my favorite movies. I adore the ending. Lightning learned he didn’t have to win the race, all that mattered was that he RACED. And in the end, he “threw it all away” to be kind, a lesson he learned throughout the film. He didn’t want what happened to Doc to happen to another car. IT’S LITERALLY SO GOOD I’M OBSESSED.
Cars 3… oh boy. I have the exact same thoughts as you. I saw the movie opening night and was left so crushed 😭 the whole movie Lightning kept saying “I decide when I quit”, but then he gave into the pressure and let a new car take his place, just like what happened to Doc. He went out on his own terms sure, but it’s just like the first movie: McQueen didn’t have to WIN, we just wanted to see him race 🙄
There’s actually an official alternate ending animatic with voice acting and everything, and it’s insanely good. Instead of McQueen giving Cruz his number, it’s forced off of him by his manager, and McQueen is forced to give up *just like Doc* . The manager picks Cruz over Lightning, but she insists Lightning get his number back. McQueen let’s her have it, happy for her (the scene also makes Cruz a lot more likeable). But then DINOCO comes over and finally sponsors McQueen, and he is given Doc’s old number to race with!! So both McQueen AND Cruz get to race against each other. It’s everything and I can’t believe the creators wrote it, animated it, then cut it 😩 definitely look it up on RUclips if you have the chance!
Sorry for my long comment lol, I really appreciate this video! Also, I have those same Crocs, heheh ☺️

I think the main problem is that people don't compare them to humans... the MOVIE ITSELF compares them to humans. It wasn't too bad in Cars 1, almost everything makes reasonable sense in that (mostly). But then Cars 2 came along and started showing famous real-world locations and even had a car Pope. THEN people started comparing it more and more to humans and real life.

as an Aerospace student, I can answer your question about cars with wings
you see, wings work only at specific scales and speeds, so once a vehicle reaches a certain weight/size wings no longer become the most effective method of propulsion and you need propellers, and then later jets as well
the fancy answer is to do with viscosity and Reynolds number, how wings at low Reynolds numbers can operate more efficiency by taking advantage of the higher viscos drag, which cannot be achieved at higher Reynolds numbers, which requires greater laminar flow and due to the reduction in viscos drag, higher airspeed to generate sufficient lift - combine this with the square-cube law (every time you square the dimensions you cube the weight) and it's just not feasible to power a giant metal structure with wings

I think he ignored that movie for a reason.
@@MelissaLawrence2002 i know that’s why i just thought it was funny lma
There is precedent for racers switching mid race. In the case of NASCAR, (i assume the inspiration for the Cars racing league), it can be performed in the case of sick & injured drivers, but in longer endurance racing series, they usually have a team of drivers and timing the shifts is part of their pit strategy
You being happy to be at Radiator Springs was so real. I love the Americana vibes. Disneyland honestly recreated it really well.
Also man, I love Cars 1 and 3 for being really good NASCAR films and I kind of wish Cars 2 had been more of a Formula One movie. Like, why was Hamilton not a Formula One car?? I get that they wanted Francisco to be more unique, but I would not have hated it for there to be more of a Formula One nod, with qualifying, fastest laps, podiums, etc. Kind of a missed opportunity in my opinion.
Cars 3 drags a little bit too long at some parts but I can’t help but to be blown away by the animation improvement, as well as Lightning’s character arc. I think that even from the first movie, he was born to be a crew chief and in Doc’s position one day.
Cars Land is the most immersive than any other land at Disneyland. Plus the best ride in the land
Nah man the cars 3 slander pissed me off.
It’s such a cute movie that showed us how older generations can learn from the new ones but also how the young can learn from the old.
He had some points I won't deny but Cars 3 is absolutely a good movie. I do wish one of the other endings was chosen over the final though.
The movie was fantastic up until the last 20 minutes 😭 the alternate ending is far superior in my opinion, there’s an animatic of it on RUclips!
Surprised you didn't mention that scene in Cars 3 with McQueen and Mater talking on the 'phone thing', I thought that was very wholesome and showed that Mater isn't always a goof ball. You also didn't mention that Cruz did Doc's move in the final race by flipping over Storm.
But yeah I 100% agree Cars 3 is pretty bad; It's like Incredibles 2, when you boil it down it is just the same story retold but with no heart and much worse because of added features that muddle the writing.
Finally someone made a VALID video on this, no one understands how fucking GOATED cars is and it’s insane 💀
Context: the movie is an homage to auto racing, specifically, NASCAR. Swapping drivers (in this case, "cars") is legal in NASCAR races. It's just that the new driver will be forced to start at the back of the race (last place), so their scenario makes sense. Just had to note this. With that being said, they should've written Lightning's closure better.
I loved the couch rant . You should def do couch rants if they are well deserved 😂
couch rant was super valid, also your cushions and poster are v cute
what about cars 2???????????
You mean Mater tall tales? Cars 2 don't exists.
I had a crush on lightning mcqueen as a kid
homie just skipped over cars 2 lmao i agree lets pretend it never happened
Dude the fact that you mention NOC is awesome. They are so funny!
now THIS is the content I've been needing !
I love how you didn't even acknowledge cars 2
If you go into the development of cars 3, they very much struggled
This is absolutely amazing keep up the great work can’t wait to see more 🔥!
New favorite RUclips channel thank youuu 🎉
been waiting on this for years son
If I could like a video more than once I would have. Great video Aaron!
Thanks!
"What the doc doin" 💀💀💀 this is a great video the intro was great! I love this movie
UGH YES dude this video RULES!! so well made and you’re absolutely right!!!
Thanks!
I adamantly agree with your defense of Cars, and also for what its worth I think maybe this wasnt the first go-to draft of cars 3; specifically because of Doc Hudson. His voice actor had passed while cars 2 was released. So potentially inbetween 2 and 3 they may have had to change a lot of different part of the story to make it work. And because of their success they didnt need to polish it nearly as much as they knew it would make money in some form for them.
Maybe an intial draft could have been opening at the race with Doc, and mcqueen finally loses to Storm. This visibly shakes him and Doc sees this as he has now been his coach, mentor and friend. It immediately resolidifies their relationship based off what we went off of from Cars for starters if that were to have happened. Then Doc trying to think of what to do talks the rusteeze guys into selling the company to this "new fangled" racing training guy who has top of the line everything just like these 'new rookies', then give him the same similar grumpy old man trope seasoned with a little bit of strong dislike for technology and bam; a cliche papaw that is wholesome, lovabale, and beleivable.
That brings us to the training center now where the rusteeze guys and Doc surprise Lighting by telling him the good news of his new and improved upcoming training capabilities. And then enter Cruise, the trainer for the facility. And immediately lighting doesnt care for her because of how energetic and extra she is (she is a cliche trainer after all), but just the same he pushes on with training with Cruise because of his insatiable taste for keeping up and winning. Sometime during the training montages we see Doc there as well watching Cruise and Mcqueen trying their best; then sudden cut to a flash back where doc was in a similar situation. In the flashback we see Doc pre-crash era with a hotstreak, but he just lost and had that same taste for victory as Lightning so he also was willing to do anything. With much older practices we see Doc training and is side by side with his coach who was retired but still quite sharp on the old odometer. There could be a brief dialog about how the old coach tells him he too had that same feeling he sees in Doc now, and that its okay to pass the torch once you find the right kindling (make it an old sounding metaphor about accepting defeat but moving forward from it, learning there is more to racing than winning.
Then we cut back out of the flashback to Doc watching them again, he sees them and the wheels start to turn internally but he notcies something else, cruise is holding herself back intentionally next to Lightning who is trying with all his might to improve to still be able to race and be a racer. Following the scene we cut to later back at at Radiator springs where all the familar characters are back again from Cars 1 re-tightening those binds we saw form by the end of the first movie. They're all gathered at Flows to ask Lightning and Doc how the training is going (Cruise is here too, Doc insisted she see it and get away from the training center to see how the REAL racing was done back in his day on a dirt track). While discussing the training Doc keeps intentionally goading Cruise little by little egging her onto race at the track, so just like before from Cars we see Doc and now Cruise where Lightning was preparing to face off after she finally caves and cant ignore him anymore. We see the familar faces on the hillside of radiator springs finest, now including lightning showing that hes a part of this town well and truly now. Lightning thinks he knows how this is going to go, and as the race is about to begin Doc gives him a wink. As the flag drops it begins the same way as before too, Doc in a dustcloud, but this time hes smirking when the dust settles. Lightning is confused as to the wink but excited to see Cruise not know how to drift on dirt. Well, she does it, perfectly, and laps Doc excitedly beating a real racer and showing her (forgive the pun) drive for BEING a racer. Lightning sees this and can't make sense of it, how did she do this, why did Doc wink, he has to know whats going on. So as hes going to confront the two Doc talks to Cruise asking why she holds herself back, just straight up bluntly following her victory. Then we see her shrink as it dawns on her that she is being openly excited about being a racer andnnotna trainer. She doesnt know what Doc means, she doesnt hold herself back, thats crazy talk. And thats when Lightning reaches them interjecting telling her what happened when he did this same race with Doc not to long ago and how he ended up, and how what doc is saying is seemingly true now that he thinks about it.
She begins to feel the pressure and tells them her backstory, admits to holding herself back due to in part of the backstory where she was mocked all theough her youth because she always wanted to be a racecar but no one ever believed in her, so she trained. She trained and trained and trained until she was on fire. Then she got an opportunity to become a trainer at a cutting edge training center teaching "real racers" how it was done, but with her own positive spin on it to be a great trainer. Still, that feeling of how no one believed in her to be a real racecar never unstuck itself for her, so she intentionally limits herself because she has to overcome her own fears and just cant. Doc and Lightning hear her story out and try to encourage her, but she quickly resigns herself to being a trainer and only a trainer because thats all she'll ever be. She quickly thanks them for the day here and kicks rocks out of town back to the training center.
We see Doc and Lightning share a concerned glance at one another, they can't just let her do this to herself. They both now see the potential within her sparking the beggining of the transitionary period where Lightning begins to think like Doc, just like his coach before him. This would show character growth and set an example that change and letting go is okay.
I'll finish the rest of the story from here in a pt. 2 reply!
i think it’s so cray that you didn’t like cars 3 bc i loved cars 3 😭😭 it’s like a solid 6 for me
right???? i was expecting a higher review i really liked and enjoyed that movie especially watching it with my little brother who had grown up watching the movies with me
This style of commentary is absolutely hilarious, glad I found this guy
bro aaron u and i are the same. i was literally just watching cars and wondering why it isnt respected as much as other pixar movie
Cars 3 really put you through it! I’ve never seen any cars movies but your coverage was great, and couch rant was very valid
I did not know Aaron from Aaron and Joe had his own channel and thank you for preaching the truth about Cars 🙌🙌🏎️🏎️
I am sooo glad Cars 1 is getting the compliments it deserves! I agee with everything you said. I absolutely love the movie and it's also my confort movie, it always makes me feel happy and warm inside. and as you said, it is HILARIOUS!
About Cars 3, I had the same opinion the first time I saw it. I changed my mind a bit after talking to some friends that liked it, but what I still don't like is the fact that we hardly see Sally even though she deserved AT LEAST as much screen time as Cruz (I'd say Cruz should've been much more secondary). I also don't like the humor in Cars 3 (hate the "McQueen is old" jokes they made ten thousand times) and I also don't like that they just made Lightning into Doc at the end, like... he's the exact copy of him and it feels like it's not Lightning anymore. It felt really forced at the end with the switch and i agree that it was poorly executed. I wanted a better ending for him and more screen time for the other awesome radiator springs characters and especially Sally!!!!
Anyways, thank uuuu for defending Cars, it deserves it! Real Gone and Life is a hughway will always be the best soundtracks!!
Less than five minutes in and this is already one of my favorite videos of yours 😁
Find it funny how Cars 2 was not mentioned at all lol.
Cars 2 review with Jo next. 🔫
