      Go with the 7i’s if you can Jay. I started with a t5i paired with KEF LS50’s and was blown away with how it filled out the high bass and midrange but it was missing a little bit on the lower octaves. Then upgraded to T7i and it gave me that little extra oomph that I was looking for. Later on I tried a T9i and personally didn’t find it to be quite as fast as the t5i or t7i. If you need a little extra encouragement, your buddy Thomas uses two t7i’s😊 thanks for all of the great content!

      @@CaptainCrunch823 Thanks for the comment. I was deciding if I go with 2 t9i or t7i. I like how you say the 7's are faster. I think 2 t7i will be enough output for a medium size 14x16 room?

      Please share your experience when you receive the t7i, especially curious about two times t5i vs one t7i and the potential placement issues between the two. I would guess the t7i is easier to integrate and place than the t5i due to its front woofer vs bottom woofer design.

    • @CaptainCrunch823
      @CaptainCrunch823 4 года назад +4

      @@BrianGarside Hey Brian, I think 14x16 sq ft is probably within range of a good fit for dual t7i's especially if you have the flexibility to place them close to corners (REL's recommended approach) but you may also want to check out REL's "subwoofer finder" tool and perhaps even give them a call for some coaching to make sure the T7i's are going to be a good match with your speakers. I would be concerned if your room were any larger. Personally, I think the T7i's are the goldilocks model offering the best compatibility with the largest range of speaker pairings but I'm definitely no expert....just a guy that played around with the t5i's, t7i's and t9i's before landing on the t7i's:) good luck with finding the right fit for you!

    This is one of the best explanations I have heard yet regarding the Rel SW's capabilities. Spot on!!!
    Personally, I was the type of audiophile who was set AGAINST ever using a SW. That changed when
    a rather knowledgeable salesman explained the Rel almost exactly as you have here. He said,
    "The Rel is not so much of a SW but more of a base management system". A Rel can be tuned so
    that you don't hear the unit (or notice it) so much as you will notice the musical presentation they
    enhance is somehow fuller, richer and simply magical. Your Audio RUclips vids are getting better
    all of the time ... keep up the good work!!

    Insightful video with detailed explanation! I own two subs, first one I purchased was a 8" Klipsch down-firing sub that was what I expected.. kind of boomy but ok. I used it for awhile for my 600Ms and ran across the REL brand, read the great reviews.. we've all been through that! So I emailed REL with a few questions and the reply was a well written "lengthly" email from a John Hunter. We go back and forth a few times and not once was there any pressure to purchase. I eventually got the Ti5 and never looked back. Not only did the REL integrate beautifully but the design is a real looker! A few months later, I think it was Steve Guttenburg, did a interview with the Lead Designer and part owner of REL... John Hunter! He is very passionate without the sales pitch and a great ambassador of bass!

    Sound is incredible!!! The Rel's blend flawlessly. I bought white and also the Rel Arrow wireless system which works very well.
    Before I bought them, I considered buying the T7i, but I have a small room and thought that having the smaller 5i would be better. After watching a Rel video about the 5i, I decided to purchase. I have been happy. I listen to ALL genres of music. Jazz bass is incredible. EDM and Hip Hop/Rap thump. But also, music NOT rich in bass take advantage. The two 5i's help make non bass heavy sound more full than with out them. Highly recommended!

    My 4th and final subwoofer is a 10" REL.
    The Yamaha and Definitive Technology subs I had before were simply different levels of "boomy". Poor definition and a distracting "boom" that covered up the detail of my Magneplaner 1.6's.
    When I installed the REL and set the gain and filters, all of the sudden I was hearing much more bass from my Maggies...wonderful, musical detail that was missing with the other subs. The REL was there for the extreme lows and sounded great without covering up the Maggies.

    I don't know why. Ive seen many reviews on this subwoofer. This review is the best one so far. I never knew that it came with a high level cable. With that said. The 8in version just doesn't get low enough or room filling enough for my needs. Even 4 of them wouldn't be enough. It's hard for me to go with anything smaller than a 12in and 300 watt rms minimum. RELs entry level subwoofers seem to be built around music, speed and accuracy. They lack that really low end thump. You have to spend quite a bit more. Before you start to feel it.

    • @randomtube8226
      @randomtube8226 4 года назад +2

      @Kris Moodley The T/9i doesn't have low end extension for my taste. A pair wouldn't be enough. I'm a bass head. Pressure, quad, all I want to do is feel the bass Lol It's hard to find powered subwoofers that offers room filling ultra low end frequency response at low volume/power. So I have to choose powered subs with multiple smaller subs or one big sub. I prefer one big subwoofer that doesn't require a ton of power to to hit the ultra low notes that can't be heard. REL powered subwoofers don't get good until the S series. Either the S/510 or S/812. The 212/SX is definitely room filling and insane. The top two tiers are just on a completely different level of their own.

      @@Skyshakerrrr The problem with SVS is that they are built around home theater and LFE. They lack the 5 way binding post for high level imput. In a hi-fi steteo setup. That input is critical. Getting harder and harder to find on most powered subs these days. I do have SVS entry level sub. Its very sloppy in the ultra low end. Its the ported version. Its a 10in and not very room filling. Claims to be 300watts rms. But its clipped. So more like 150rms. If they made a 12in ported version of their entry level that could go even lower and be a true clean 300 watt rms that would hit the spot.

    Nice review. I think it is worth mentioning that the way our musical scales work (non linear) means that there is as much notes below 261hz (middle c on a piano) as above. That said you miss out a lot of musicality by ignoring the base. Key issue is that it is harder to get good flat bas than middle and treble.

    REL’s are the absolute best subwoofer I have found. What got me looking for subs were owning some Maggie’s. I tried everything out there. It was either to boomy or to slow to keep up with the Maggie’s. Plus I can’t tell you how many hours per sub I put into trying to match subwoofers to Maggie’s. From placement to volume and when/where/crossover point the subwoofer should come in to assist etc. the REL’s were instantly a match just requiring some fine tunning. I haven’t found a faster sub that can keep up with the Maggie’s. REL is not Red Lobster 🦞 lol. If you can afford the s series you will be very satisfied. They also have a reference sub but was out of my price range. I would love to hear a review on the REL reference sub.

    Texture of bass changes dramatically in the low range.
    It is not a coincidence that a Neve console has their low EQ points at 120Hz, 63Hz and 31.5Hz. A 22" kick has a natural resonance at 60Hz. 120Hz sometimes called a false bottom, contains the 'hit' and impact of percussive attack-- snare, toms, bass guitar-- many different instruments.
    While there is no 30Hz on an electric guitar, but boost the snot out of 30Hz with a shelf eq and the body of the instrument grows dynamically.
    A sub can have the same effect-- notice that a good sub increases the entire body of the speakers.

    When it comes to servo subs, the "best" on the market, seem to be in the DIY space, esp those from GR Research, namely their dual and triple OB towers, which use custom Rythmik 12" paper-cone drivers. (Tho a single sealed 12" option is also available) both OB kits have flat-packs available on the AudioCircle forums so all you'd need is wood glue, some clamps, paint & a little patience. I recently assembled one of GR Research's X-LS Encore bookshelves, & even the base level kit I assembled is worlds better than anything I've owned so far. I'd highly recommend reaching out to Danny Richie to see what he's got!

    Very interesting. Your talking points are exactly the same as Zero Fidelity's (OK, with a unique fish restaurant story thrown in). Even down to the "filters add delay" and 8ms thing. But filters shift phase, don't they? Why a delay? It doesn't make sense to me. Unless it's achieved through a DAC/DSP/ADC perhaps? But isn't 8ms very slow for a DSP? It sounds to me like REL gave you the script. I'm a big fan of REL (as probably the oldest subwoofer manufacturer) but I find it surprising that you're bringing identical talking points.

    I was using loud, farting, rumble subwoofers primarily for movies. Then I got into 2 channel audio and Roon. "Uncle Paul (McGowan)" of PS Audio convinced me to give REL a try. Not only do REL subwoofers work with systems that have a DAC and/or preamplifier with no subwoofer input, but they offer a much more refined sound. They work beautifully with two channel music. They turn your front left and right speakers into playing truly full range. I've also been happy with their home theater performance. Getting two REL T7i's was life changing. It balanced and smoothed out the bass. The whole sound of my system was elevated. When correctly set up, you cannot identify where the bass is emanating. Highly recommended.

    Hi! If the REL's delay is 8ms, and sound travels about 3 meters in 8ms, isn't some of the low frequencys out of phase anyway? Or am I missing something?

    • @projectmalus
      @projectmalus 4 года назад

      That's two different things, isn't it? With the main speakers only, the low frequencies will always be delayed because they move slower in the room, that's the sound as it travels in the room, and it's more natural to us because this is the way sound travels. The out of phase thing with the subs connected to the mains is like having two waves (going to sub and mains) and one laying one on top of the other, and having them match as best we can electronically in time, before it's sent out and the room acoustics affect it. I could be wrong :) It's the electronic phase vs the acoustic wave phase.
      Thinking about it, it's more like this: It depends which direction you're coming from. If the electronics are settled where you want them, then you tackle the room acoustics, and if the sound isn't good then the room acoustics need more treatment. If the room acoustics are as good as they can get, then the electronic control is needed, where this sub would shine.
      I wonder if that Dirac room correction would be a good complement to this sub. Fix both the room and the source.

If you're only going to listen to accoustic jazz recordings and classical plus throw in some 60's and 70's pop, you can get by without one. However if you want to listen to modern jazz, movie scores, and anything 80's on up you are missing out on alot. They're worth the headache.
