  • Digital Painting Tutorial: Painting Monsters
    Concept Art Genre: Sci-Fi Creatures
    Subject: How to Paint Fun Monsters
    Have you ever noticed how most art projects have difficult parts that you have to muscle through to get to the fun, payoff moments? Today, let's try to make something that is ALL payoff. Let's skip the vegetables and have desert for dinner.
    Today, let's give ourselves a break. Let's make a monster that makes no sense. Decide what parts of a design or a rendering are the most fun for you and just do that. Don't worry about design rules, likes or what others will think. Today, paint something weird just for yourself.
    Paint a fun monster. Today, you are the client. You are the audience. Make yourself happy.
    Key Take-Aways: Tap into that part of a project that is the most fun for you and hold onto it.
    → It doesn't have to be difficult to be successful
    → Weird = awesome
    → Go nuts, love the result

    This is maybe my favourite video here so far. "Let go, and have fun." It's a lesson I only recently started to learn, and I wasn't expecting to find it here.

    This was beautiful. I call the creature design Strider. You were right to ditch the first idea for this. Neil Degras Tyson would be proud of your ability to ideate a unique-looking lifeform.

    So I’ve been using the airbrush on procreate and practicing the methods you teach here. Just curious, do you feel like the brush matters all that much for this style of painting? So far the airbrush is easiest to use for me.

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 года назад

      I don't think brushes matter as much as they seem to. They do put a slight spin on things but technique and concepts seem to have a much bigger impact in my experience. Airbrush can definitely work for this style - I use it heavily myself and it's about the most basic brush that there is.

    Hardy, how long does it take you to make a concept like this?

    • @fowlerillus
      @fowlerillus  2 года назад +1

      This one went really quickly and smoothly. I'd say it was about 2 hours but these can often take a good bit longer
