Mr. Peanutbutter: The Power of Positivity

  • I've been asking myself this question for years, honestly. Bojack is one thing, where the show spends an inordinate amount of time on him, so you can see why people are so sympathetic, but we don't get that time with Mr. Peanutbutter. Most of the time we DO get is filled with hilarious gags and absurd schemes, so it's the public opinion on him is really interesting.
I'm sure there are a few holdouts, as always, but most people really love his happy-go-lucky, carefree attitude. Even with his serious moments, the overall opinion of Mr. PB is super positive. But, in real life, I'm not exactly sure he'd be as popular as the yellow lab we see in this series.

Leonardo DiCaprio is nearly 50 dating women in their early 20s and the only pushback he gets from that is the occasional gag about 24 being his cutoff point for dating, so no one finding Mr Peanutbutter creepy is pretty realistic. He's also a good case study of toxic positivity, as his inability to acknowledge Diane's negative thoughts and feelings was a large part of why the didn't work out. Also probably why she was attracted to him in the first place.

I never had a ton of trust or respect for Mr. Peanutbutter, probably because I've known people like him, and I'm very aware of the pitfalls that lay beneath their positive, fun-loving demeanor. Mr. Peanutbutter is a path-of-least-resistance guy. He's easy-going and generous--as long as he's basically having a good time and doing what he wants to be doing. But there's a selfishness that underlies it. As soon as doing the right thing or being emotionally considerate requires him to face up to any real, serious unpleasantness, he becomes dismissive, avoidant, and insensitive. He behaves like a good person most of the time because he wants to, because it yields more enjoyment and satisfaction for him than not being a good person...but when that stops being true, he very abruptly can no longer be counted on. He's also difficult to be in a close relationship with because his desire to not be effected by negativity results in him ignoring or being dismissive of other people's criticism and concerns, and on the rare occasion when he _can't_ dismiss, deflect, make light of, or avoid criticism, he becomes hostile, petty, and unkind.
I'm not saying he's worse than Bojack. Bojack does a lot more direct irreparable harm, and is much quicker to default to cruelty and destructiveness. If I HAD to pick one of them to trust, it would definitely be Mr. Peantubutter. But I really wouldn't want to have to pick either of them to count on for anything genuinely important.

I honestly loved that episode. Felt like it highlighted that PB is a real person and his happiness isn't a facade, it's a choice. Bojack has moments where he embraces happiness and focuses on the now, he just can't sustain. PB obviously has bad things in his life, but we see he handles most of them by taking some time to feel bad and then being excited for the next thing. And to be clear, he WAS nice to BJ, for like 20 years, while BJ crapped on him every chance he got. And BJ basically took PBs lack of aggression and sadness and an indication that PB didn't understand the digs and ridicule. That episode highlights he absolutely did, PB knew BJ was crapping on him to his face for 20 years and he still chose to greet him happily 100% of the time, still chose to invite him closer to his life, still made the choice to be positive towards BJ. Pb has probably shown more consistent happiness kindness towards BJ than literally any other person in BJs life. Ever. More than his parents, more than PC (who helps BJ, but she's not nice to him lolol she calls him fat and stuff all the time), more than his gfs, PB is the nicest person BJ has ever had in his life and he hates him for it.

I feel like Mr. Peanutbutter is definitely more appealing for all the things you mentioned, but I also want to say this.
Compared to almost ANYONE else in the cast, PB displays the least negative emotions. And I don't say that to say he isn't experiencing them; arguably PB is up there with the most depressed characters in the cast for most of the show.
He just hides it well, and when he does display his emotions openly (and tbh I think his issue is more not being honest with himself/pushing stuff down more than hiding it on purpose) it is in the most subtle and/or friendly way possible.
His pain is more easy to handle than the other casts', and it's often hidden away so you don't have to look at it.
I think this is especially true when compared to Diane, someone whose sadness and anger is more obviously on display; and in a more uncomfortable or 'unattatractive' way.
I've kinda experienced this sort of situation before.. where you being (visibly) more upset, even if you are still maintaining good, assertive communication, will make you look like the problem, the aggressor, the one who is too sensitive or expects too much.
I don't think PB is a bad person, ofc. And he absolutely changes a lot, like everyone else does, and for the better I think. He gets a lot more thoughtful; his cellphone convo with Diane towards the end of the show is one of my favorite conversations in the show. I just think you might not see the problems he has to work through (or why his behavior could be hurting others) because of his affect, and his 'good intentions' always being at the forefront (as opposed to someone like Bojack, whose selfish and avoidant intentions are nearly always at the forefront for example).
He is, like the rest of the cast, a brilliantly done character, and an excellent example of what maturity really means, especially in relationships, and what it isn't. Particularly on the idea that "I didn't mean to hurt you, I was trying to do X" doesn't matter as much as or excuse the harm actually done.

      @hughcaldwell1034 6 месяцев назад +7

Yeah, I can sort of understand people thinking that she could have been kinder ("Thanks, but this isn't really what I wanted,") in that instance, but that's because we're only seeing the tip of the iceberg at that point. In the Halloween party flashback episode, we see that he's been a bad listener from the beginning, and at some point "I was trying to be nice" ceases to be a good excuse for not knowing basic things about your partner.

    • @dislecsyk991
      @dislecsyk991 6 месяцев назад +7

@hughcaldwell1034 Not listening to or understanding your partner is certainly part of it and is a bad thing, but there's something a little bit more subtle and nefarious to that sort of behaviour than just that, and as much as the reaction to the Belle room incident bothered me, it did perfectly demonstrate the issue.
There are people that will deliberately do things for you, after you've told them you don't want it, with the entire purpose of putting you in the impossible position of having to either be grateful for that thing you didn't want, or look bad in front of other people, which then turns them against you for being an ungrateful arsehole after that great thing the other person did for you. It's a manipulation tactic that within relationships usually goes hand-in-hand with gaslighting, and it's evil behaviour.
Like I said, I've been on the receiving end of it before now, so I could immediately see it for what it was, and I can understand why people who haven't been there might not recognise it, but I think it disappointed me that so many fans of the show didn't see that that's what it was going for.

I dont hate PB, hes not evil, and by hollywood standards hes one of the normal, healthy kinds. I also think people underestimate how he is genuinely the nicest person Bojack has ever had in his life, and that PB has shown more consistent joy and happiness towards seeing Bojack than anybody else ever has in Bojacks life.
He goes to therapy with his wife, a lot of dudes woukd reject that but he accepts the responsibility. His first wife was his age, his second wife was around his age, and diane is younger but im pretty sure she was about 25 when they met. The biggest red flag in dating is Pickles, who is inexcusably young and ignorant and he absolutely takes advantage of that. He frequently drops what hes doing to help others, like rushing to the coast with semis of strainers to save the ocean ppl.
Ppl hate on him for him and dianes issues, but they both do it, they both fail to listen, fail to respect boundaries and expextations, etc. They were a bad match, realistically.
I think a lot of ppl are kinda like bojack in that they want PB to be kind of miserable. They want to see its all a farce and the silver linings thing is all a gimmick that he puts on. But its not. PB knows the world sucks and chooses to smile and enjoy things and celebrate life and i think a lot of ppl like and need that perspective sometimes, because if you never celebrate youll just be diane at best or bojack at worse. Theres no way to perfectly live life and when you look at the characters and their lives, lets be real: most trap themselves in misery every day, and its a choice to keep doing the same thing that made them miserable yesterday. Dianes constant moralizing, Bojacks deflecting, PC, working herself to an early grave. And theyre not trapped by poverty or anything, they choose it everyday
Worse thing he really did was shove diane against the wall, which is obviously bad, but not worse than what we see most other charactera do.
I think people underestimate how he is genuinely the nicest person Bojack has ever had in his life, and that PB has shown more consistent joy and happiness towards seeing Bojack than anybody else ever has in Bojacks life. In 20 years of insults and ridicule, which PB likely understood 100% of those slings, PB still embraces Bojack kindly every time and expresses genuine interest and pleasure in being around him. And its not desperation to be liked, he does genuinely love Bojack.
Todd is the only true innocent, and he made a SAing robot.

Normal ? The dog makes an admission to habitually avoid negative emotions, he refuses to ever stop inserting himself in other people's lives and never really takes their feelings into consideration, he's a terrible listener...ect.
Todd is the same as Mr peanut butter, but on a lesser scale. His head is up his butt, and he does one dumb stunt after another, where he should have been locked up long ago, and for a time he was when he used bojack's house for a scheme and got busted, yet he broke out of prison after the riot.
He never thinks anything through and the dude is a mooch who never can't stop and think...

The more I re-watch the show, the more I'm convinced that Mr. Peanutbutter might have undiagnosed ADHD. He's very social, energetic, is excited about everything new and is extremely passionate about it, yet fails every time to finish his projects. How often does he do random stuff because he thinks that it might be a great idea, but quickly forgets about it? There's such a striking pattern here. While he definitely cares about his friends and partners and wants to do everything to make them feel loved, he fails to get certain cues or completely misunderstands his partners because he can't focus enough on what they actually want to express (like the ball room or the fake library). There's never any malicious intent, he just doesn't know any better.
Mr. Peanutbutter not being able to pay enough attention to what people say is a big focus on his plots and cause many conflicts throughout the show. He jumps from one thought to another without looking back because he gets lost in his own thoughts because his mind seems just as chaotic as an M.C. Escher painting.
I couldn't find any confirmation, but as someone who's autistic and had some aquaintances with ADHD, he definitely seems like he's neurodivergent. It wouldn't surprise me if that was the writer's intention, since Judah is heavily implied to be on the autism spectrum.

I feel like PB is loved for a similar reason Todd is loved: He's sorta stupid. Yeah, I get he has his moments of self-awareness, but her 100x more moments where he says something insenisble or ridiculous as a gag or something. So when he ever does anything awful or is involved in something bad (politics, being in relationships where he's 20+ years older), it's easy to dismiss it because, well, he's dumb, and if he was smarter and knew better, he would also consequently do better, probably. Plus, unlike someone like Diane and Bojack, since he is very noticably dumb and also doesn't come off like he thinks he's smarter than everyone else, he doesn't really challenge the viewer or anyone else in his universe. It's easy to dislike those characters because they can seem judgey, whereas PB has a very open mind in a similar vein Todd does, because they're sorta just not that smart and naive.

But when the party is over and you really get to know him? As we saw with his ex's. He's so caught up having a good time. He's oblivious to those who aren't.

During the first episodes he gave the vibe that he was kinda fake in his demeanor, but the twist that he was just like that and he genuinely admires Bojack as an actor made him an entertaining himbo. He had his flaws, he was immature, attention seeker and not a good listener when he's excited (which is most of the time), but deep down he means well. Him dating younger women made sense considering his immaturity, also he never went for underage women like Bojack did. His biggest sin was cheating Pickles but tried to make up for it and let her go when she met someone that made her happier. Most of the conflict between PB and Dianne happened because they wanted opposite things in life so they were doomed to fail, but he never had ill feelings towards her when the relationship didn't work out, making him a healthy ex. His development of being in peace outside a relationship was an important step towards being more mature.

Mr. Peanutbutter really is an amazing dude overall. I don't know why he gets so much hate when he is literally one of the best characters in the whole series. Diane deserves all the hate. PB was always a loyal friend to Bojack, he's too good for diane, and most importantly of all, he was always there for bojack he never abandoned him or mistreated him like so many others. He's a good boy

I actually hated Mr Peanutbutter the whole time. He's extremely annoying. And also, I'm not a dog person

I did actually need this one explained to me; I find the character and his storylines *incredibly* annoying
