Fascinating to hear how the music was molded and developed through the sessions, but, even more so, how the final takes showed greater restraint, which is the essence of the perfection of the finished record and is characteristic of Going for the One as a whole. A great historical document of the birth of one of the best rock albums ever made. Since 1977, I'd envisioned Mountain Studios as a thing of crystalline beauty, but it looks more like a seedy basement in Notting Hill...

It's amazing to me that such a sublime song as Awaken came from such shambolic jams. Steve Howe plays a lot of utter rubbish, and then manages to pull off the most perfect parts in the final tracks. When I was a kid I thought these guys were just geniuses who just conceived this amazing stuff and played it as if dictated to by the gods. I'm not sure I prefer knowing the "truth" or not.
The only person who got things perfectly, (after the song started being mixed for the master)., is Rick. He is just so incredible, that they called him ''one take Wakeman''.
Yes, but unfortunately, he could never recreate his magical studio moments on stage. I have heard so many live renditions of songs that were almost destroyed by Wakeman because he either refused to, or simply didn't learn how to, play the proper parts. "The Revealing Science of God" from the Keys to Ascension concert is a case in point. Its as if he always wanted to improvise instead of just playing the parts which were perfected in the studio. When he improvises, his "fiddly-diddly" inclinations really take over.
It's funny you say that and I often think the same when watching this. You hear a lot of the scratch track Steve in particular played and knowing the final product you know how none of his studio jams remained. Everything became a place card for the final over dubs. A real interesting aspect of this is from a live performance (so no surprise it's always different), of Yessongs and in particular Yours is no disgrace. The live solo Steve does is maybe one of the best guitar solos of all time. Then watch the Yessongs movie. Completely different performance and perhaps an even better solo. A little more angular and herky jerky but absolutely incredible.
I absolutely agree about the "Yours Is No Disgrace" solo on the album Yessongs, which I also believe to be one of the greatest rock guitar solos of all time. However, I really hate the solo in the Yessongs movie, which is a mess and just doesn't come off at all (in my view). When Steve Howe is inspired he can play some remarkable things, but he probably can't always force it to happen at will. By the way, Happy Birthday tomorrow to Jon Anderson, who is turning 72. (He's 20 years and 4 days older than me).
ABSOLULELY one of my favorite albums... wait, yes, Awaken BLEW my mind when l first heard it, and now, and ..yes RICK is a funny, man indeed. lt's a good thing this band ''nicked'' him. He really can take you to places that no one can. XD
damn... the amazing splendor of Awaken is forever marred for me by the image at 16:57 :)) will be forever haunted with that for the rest of my life :))
love this doco but what the actual Mcflurry at 50:23?? 🤣🤣🤣 with Rick Wakeman conducting? This is hilarious. And then at 54:14 Steve asks," did somebody overblow(new word) at the end? lmfao. They had so much fun making this album

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JON!!
Masterpiece
ABSOLULELY one of my favorite albums... wait, yes, Awaken BLEW my mind when l first heard it, and now, and ..yes RICK is a funny, man indeed. lt's a good thing this band ''nicked'' him. He really can take you to places that no one can. XD
damn... the amazing splendor of Awaken is forever marred for me by the image at 16:57 :)) will be forever haunted with that for the rest of my life :))
Que maravilha! wonderfulll
love this doco but what the actual Mcflurry at 50:23?? 🤣🤣🤣 with Rick Wakeman conducting? This is hilarious. And then at 54:14 Steve asks," did somebody overblow(new word) at the end? lmfao. They had so much fun making this album
Wakeman is so funny. Loved the sense of humor
Rick could be a regular on Monty Python's Flying Circus.
He started out (from what I heard) playing music, and touring with, a circus..
@@nicolejoleneable ~ Nah ...not a circus. l've got his autobiography, and he played with some boys at weddings, but no circus. Incidentally ...l think Wakey was a living _doll_ at this time in his life! He was starting to grow into himself, and looked a bit more like a man, and less like the kid. l cant take my eyes of him here! xD
theresa42213 :The group then performed a series of dates in Paris for a rock and roll circus with various bands backing the circus acts. ...That was copied from Wikipedia. They started by saying The “Strawbs” ..However you’re correct. It isn’t exactly working for THE circus..If anything I thought his sense of humor made him sexy ☺️
@@nicolejoleneable ~ Oh thanks! l'll have to re read the book! ...His sense of humour, his brilliant musicianship, and a few other things! Especially between 76' and 86! Have you heard his new album? lt's really _good!_
Squire and White ~ what a section!
One word....... PRICELESS!!
Side watching while playing Borderlands 2. Awesome.
The humour is so British of a particular period. A bit Monty Python, a bit Peter Cook and Dudley Moore. Everyone I knew at that time was doing the same kind of stuff!!
Awaken starts at 5:28.
❤️thanks for sharing!✌🏼
Howe and Squire do Dylan - priceless
I know. . serious. . !!
Years ago they had a free concert at Tower Records Hollywood, ca
