Bob lives up the road from me . Two things about Bob ; one , he's a brilliant drummer . Two , he's a really down to earth guy and always has been .
GOD BLESS DON ......As a drummer he was one of my childhood heroes. His drumming with SLADE was AWESOME. Lovely guy, great tight stalwart player...He always looked so cool chewing gum while keeping up such a powerful backbeat to the group......I remember when I was 11 in 1973 hearing he had this terrible accident & I was rooting for him . We all were. He came through it back to recovery magnificently ...He was better than ever. Slade were all such great characters. Still are. & could teach modern young bands a thing or two . (Paul)
Cozy lives on in my heart. He played with so many great groups and had a very recognizable style.
Rock heritage Don Powell and Cozy’s kit !
I'm not a drummer but i get the excitement of seeing a hero's kit and playing on it, much the same as me seeing my guitar heroes guitars
not all heroes wear capes.....thanks for shining a light on the legend of Cozy
Ian Paice, Fireball intro to an Era, a Genre.
The drum fill after the final harmonica break in Fingertips - Part Two. "What key? What key?" Gives me goosebumps every time.
Teasing a drum fill ranking...bring it on Andy
Thoroughly enjoyed this. If every RUclips video was like this, I'd never sleep.
44 years since I saw Don on stage. Looking good old fella.
Max Roach saw him play the 1970s in a club in Manhattan. I was floored he was playing a melody i never heard that before done
That's the first time I've seen Andy play the drums! He isn't lying! 😁😉
Great clip! Saw Cozy with Rainbow in Stockholm 1980 on the Down to Earth Tour. A roadie polished the drumkit until the very last minute:) Great gig..!
Very enjoyable video. Cozy Powell is one of the few musicians I regret not having seen live. I was hoping to see him with Gary Moore, but that didn't happen. In 1980 he was a star in his own right, regardless of whatever band he was in, but it was a shame he left Rainbow. Cozy and Robert Plant appearing on Tiswas is worth a look, for anyone old enough to remember.
Pictures of Home -Deep Purple Machine Head 1972💯🥁
Fabulous stuff. I first saw Cozy at Donington. It was my first concert, and I was lucky enough to be on the guest list. I was in the backstage area - which, for that first Monsters, was the driver's area in the pits, not actually behind the stage. I clutched the All Night Long picture sleeve and a pen in my hand. Saxon were in the canteen there, but they were a relatively new band, and although I loved Wheels Of Steel, I wasn't in awe of them. I stood outside when Roger Glover walked past me. I was in awe then. He smiled and said hello, but I couldn't bring myself to speak to him. 15 year old me couldn't handle it. Shortly after, a motorbike came along the racetrack, and a guy on a motorbike pulled up. He got off his bike, took off his helmet, and there was Cozy. Cozy effin' Powell. Just like on the sleeve to Over The Top. Awe. He smiled and said hello...and I couldn't speak to him either. Cozy's last gig with Rainbow later that day saw him play yer actual Stargazer. Magic. Just a few weeks later, I saw Cozy play with MSG at Wolves Civic. Another guest pass. Another nod and a smile from Cozy. I still couldn't speak. Dammit. I got over my fear of talking to superstars when I spoke to a woman at a Kiss gig at Bingley in Stafford. My last time on the guest list for a number of years. I thought I recognised her, but she was American, and I didn't know any American women. It turned out to be Diana Ross. Coincidently, the Friday rock show broadcasted Slade live at Reading that night, which we listened to on the car radio on the way home. I went on to see Cozy play with MSG again, Whitesnake twice, and Black Sabbath back at Wolves Civic. Six times in ten years, with four different bands. I didn't get a chance to speak to him again, sadly. RIP Cozy, you will always be a legend.
That was some nice benefits, bro and I didn't miss you by far in the support road crew for Saxon and Slade in 1980 tours, happy daze
Brilliant.
Nigel Olsen on Crocodile Rock. Three fills, each different, each brilliant.
Great drumming from both of you!
Cozy switched from traditional to matched grip effortlessly, hell of a musician! Also, saw Slade at Bristol Colston Hall circa 1981 on the We'll Bring the House Down tour. To this day, still the best gig I've been too!! Keep rocking Don!!
OMG! That kit - and the heads are PRISTINE! And sneaking up without official permission - I felt the visceral excitement! Kudos!
Even a guitar player can enjoy this, thumbs up🙂
I went to the first birthday bash and the last one. Won't make it to this one but you'll have a great time. It's a top show
Wonderful, thank you for sharing!
Bruford- opening of South Side of the Sky
He does an outrageous fill in "Indiscipline"
Hahaha loved it!!! Nice people.....
The great Don Powell! Excellent.
Great video. Actual musicians chewing the fat with great humour. Fine looking town, very fine looking live venue, fine looking arts-center, fine looking Andy. Kidderminster is truly blessed! (Apart from the want of fine weather, obvs.)
What a thoroughly decent bunch of lads, really enjoyed it thank you.
Brilliant video. Cozy's kit and The Great Don Powell. What more can we ask for. First record I ever bought was Slade's 'Mama weer all crazee now', way way....way ...way back in 1971 (I think)
I think that one was 1972 actually. I had all the singles too. Do you remember they used to misspell all the titles on the songs ? …lol…’Look Wot U Dun’ ,,,,’Take Me Bak Ome ‘ ,,,,’Mamma Weer All Craizee Now’,,,,’Gudbye T Jane’….My parents who would buy the singles for me when I was 9 used to complain about the bad spelling but I didn’t care…..lol. Paul.
@@walterevans2118 I stand corrected. Being a year out is not too bad considering I can barely remember what I did a minute ago.
The 'Motown' fill - used on lots of their material but, for example, the opening of Dancing In The Streets....probably played by any of the Funk Bros drummers
I'm a bit like a very low-rent version of yourself, Andy.
A bit of success-ish, then went into teaching drums in schools & colleges.
Like you, THAT FILL blew my little head off when eavesdropping on my bro & his mates in about 79, I guess. I'd've been 10 years old but it stayed with me. That fill told a story in itself.
I've never been good at mouth vs brain.
When I finally got to meet The Man, what I meant to say was, "You inspired me so much, I've learnt so much from listening to you over the years, Cozy".
What actually came out was, "I taught myself to play listening to you!".
Cozy looked at me as if to say, "What, I'm so shit that even beginners can work me out?" & started talking to someone else with something less annoying to say.
When i learnt of his death the night after I believe that maybe he was on the phone at excessive speed, but for years i felt a bit guilty about this episode, with a picture of him in his Ferrari in my head shouting, "Fucking beginner drums, am I?!, as the accelerator went to the floor, .
Nice that his son, (I think it's) Joe assured me this was not the case.
Favourite drum fill... It's a toss up between Ian Paice's mad fill in Fireball and Barrie Barlow's equally mad one in No Lullaby. Having said that, I'll probably remember a whole host more in two hours haha...
That was really cool Andy.
Glad you enjoyed it
Beautiful! In every regard, truely amazing, tnx
This is a real dream come true and I know for myself that I would feel like a little kid who got a dream gift, wonderful video. Even after the initial doubts I can say that Andy is a completely ok guy who I like and with whom I could have a drink beer and talk about various bands and drummers all day.
As a 10-year-old watching Cozy Powell performing Dance With The Devil on Top Of The Pops in 1973, I knew I wanted to be a drummer.
I saw the first US Tour of Rainbow in NYC in November 1975. Beacon Theater Show with Tony Carey on keys. Cozy was on the Red Sparkle Ludwig’s for that show. I was 16 years old and I had never seen a more powerful drummer before Cozy and I was seeing shows from 13 years old! Cozy floored me and I’ve been a fan ever since.
Opening to Slade's Far Far Away is the greatest - you actually had the guy there.
Thanks Andy that looked like great fun and a dream come true and thank heavens you didn't ball's it up, nice one.have a wonderful weekend and PEACE AND LOVE TO EVERYONE ❤❤.
Best video on RUclips!! Absolutely brilliant! Well played Andy. With every drummer wanting to learn this I'm curious to know why Cozy avoided playing it live.
Fab…what treat…best drum opening ever! 🙌
That was fun to watch! Beautiful people sharing their love of music.
well done !!! Brilliant video ,I saw Cozy on the Rainbow rising tour , sheer magic !!!
Superb video. What a kit.
I sold an Alesis drum machine to Don in the early 90s after I was made redundant. He wrote me a really nice note wishing me well when he sent the cheque. Top bloke. My guitar teacher at the time was playing with Slade. I was at Donnington thay year too - got home to find out that I had failed my A levels miserably😂
Congrats Andy on fulfilling a dream!
This video is so much fun ! To see the history of that beautiful drumset there is wonderful !!
Great video and great drumming from you both! I was there along with Bob watching Rainbow at Sophia Gardens 1980 in Cardiff, Cozy was brill as always!!! "Like Jim'll Fix It" !!! 🤣
Stargazer + Alight In The Black, what a side of vinyl!
Absolutely relentless.
Bob got the choked hi hat sharper, is all I'll say.
But both of you were amazing, as was the kit.
Cozy, what a legend.
I had tickets for the Monsters of Rock at Donnington, but came out of hospital on that very day after 6 months following a motor bike crash and the surgeon said I risked losing my leg if I slipped and fell. So I didnt go and of course it was Cozy's last performance with Rainbow.
Luckily, I got to see Rainbow with Cozy a few times on the famous 76/77 tours.
Every one of Mark Craney’s fills on the Gino Vannelli track ‘brother to brother’..
Nice bit of nostalgia there, Andy.
I must have seen this kit in 84 when I saw Whitesnake in Dublin. I definitely remember Cozy having an impressive looking kit, with his name in the bass drums.
Great video Andy and well done on the Stargazer intro 😎
Brilliant video and great looking kit. The kit i borrowed and learnt on was a full chrome pearl which is now living in a village just up the road from me. I guess i should go and see it someday soon, it might give me a bit the same feeling you had playing cozys. There must be loads of rock history to visit up in the midlands so look forward to some more like this.
Wunderschön !
Thanks for all you do !
Tommy Aldridge's break in the middle of Snortin' Whiskey...
Well done Andy.
Superb! 🥁
Fabulous content guys!! Excellent drumming skills from you all!.
Chrome Yamaha Kit ... 26 inch bass drums ... 15 inch toms on the top ... 1981 after weeks of studious listening and not being able to figure out the classic Stargazer intro / Cozy Quads I went to see The Michael Schenker Group at Newcastle City Hall . I was up on the balcony as close to the side of the stage as possible . Apart from Schenker himself I can't recall anything in particular about anyone else in the band as I fixated mainly on Cozy all night . He didn't disappoint as the mighty quads were unleashed at the end of his solo and all had been revealed . I then shared a journey home with a bus full of drunks ( it was a Friday night ) duly trying to nail my version of the quad technique on my thighs and the bus floor .
Great stuff, and thanks to Bob!
brilliant stuff, well done. I would watch a lot more of this. You interact with other musicians really well, it's joyous.
So, so much fun!!
A really fun watch. Loved it. I do think that on comparison, Bob played the fill in a way that evoked the original more, even though Andy's effort was also worthwhile. I wish I could go to the gig at the mill. Love to hear the name of Thunder mentioned, which ought to get some coverage on the channel.
Great video! I really enjoyed you drummers chatting over the music.
What a fucking great video pure class.....hello from detroit rock city
Brilliant! What a FUN video!
The Ludwig red sparkle was the classic kit in my opinion. I saw him play it with Bedlam at the Marquee and then Rainbow at the Rainbow theatre!
He favoured Premier 250 pedals, which I spotted on this 9000 set!
One of the great rock
drummers ever!
Massive respect!!
Wonderful video, Andy. Your enthusiasm shows here.
Another awesome video Andy!
A bit obscurist perhaps but check out John Halsey’s exemplary stick work with Patto - esp. his drum fill into “Flat-footed Woman” 😎
Love it Andy ...... your little face lit up. 😃
Incredible video Andy! Everything about it was very British, including the overcast day and drizzle, which I appreciate being from America. I really love Cozy Powells drum sound and playing on the ELP "Sprocket Sessions".
Another iconic drum kit:
Carl Palmers stainless steel drum kit made by British steel with the intricate carvings in the toms. Have you seen that video clip from the 70's TV program "Aquarius", where they feature Carl Palmer talking about it?
What a terrific video, Andy. Loved it ❤️💥💥💥🤘
Brilliant! Loved this!👍😊👏👏👏👏👏
Glad you enjoyed it
Wow! How cool was that!!!
Absolutely fantastic and also happy first day of October Andy have a great day ❤😊
An iconic kit? Keith Moon's Pictures of Lily Premier kit.
Fantastic stuff Andy!
You were good Andy but Bob was absolutely spot on!
I dig it!
Great video, I was a huge cozy fan, saw him with Rainbow and again with msg, would love to have a thrash about on that kit!
Sweet episode, lovely dudes
Andy, Bob Richards played with those Welsh wizards Man! I've seen him play, he's great. Do a feature on them PLEASE!
Slade had more hits than T.Rex. Fantastic fantastic band. They saved our school parties here in Germany in the 70ies. Don Powell was a very very hard hitting drummer. I saw Rainbow here in Germany 1976 - opener AC/DC!!! with Bon Scott believe it or not- Ticket price 8 Euros!!! Those were them days. Of course fantastic concert from both bands. On Stargazer the Munich Symphony Orchestra was the icing on the cake.
Glorious!. Made me laugh and cry a bit. (don't tell anyone)
When I was a kid in the early 70s, my Ma had Cozy Powell’s “Dance with the Devil” and played it to death. I learned how to do the drum part and was trying to impress a girl at school by playing it on a desk. She exclaimed “That’s Rasputin by Boney M!”. Oh the shock of Cozy’s beat being ripped off… 😮
Mick Tucker …Ballroom Blitz !
For me, Ballroom Blitz and Blockbuster are up there with the very best of the glam era. Love is like Oxygen is another great pop song of theirs.
I'm not a drummer but Mick Tucker was brilliant
Great video Andy and you play the drums great as i would expect from Robert Plants drummer. I wonder how may watching have no idea what the reference to Triggers broom is about!.
genius!!!!!!!
Cozy Powell. Don Powell. Bob Richards. Welsh genes and jeans all over the place : )
For Your Pleasure.
I've recently been indulging in the Roxy of my formative years, rejoicing in RUclips live offerings after over 50yrs a fan. I wonder if you've dipped a toe into their early albums? They last. Sometimes, they'd get into a groove that you could wish would last for hours. Such as on this track. The space left for Paul Thompson's drumming here (after 2 mins) could even prompt you to do a live version yourself. For some reason, he became a member of the Angelic Upstarts, apparently!
Deep Purple's Fireball has one of my favourite intros (includes great drum fill).
This is a great channel
The drum intro to Smash the Mirror from the Tommy Soundtrack is so musical and tasteful. It's not Moonie but it's fab.
The drum fill late on in Pick up the pieces, the daft off-kilter fill by neil peart after the guitar solo in Distant early warning, Sarah Webster Fabio Sweet sounds-a very fast accelerating paradiddle and roll from a standing start-these spring to mind. Oh and, Pie-sty? Paste ffuck'ss
Don looks like a Mark Gatiss League of Gentleman character now.
This is great! An entertaining blend of improv, rock history and local artists. Btw was this a recording custom kit? Great kit - what a thunderous sound.
Eastender's theme tune.
I love this answer 😂
God no, it's the signal to switch off the tv.
Well it’s iconic, can’t argue with that.
