I know this too. My coworker's wife is from Germany and she confirmed it. Now I've got two reliable sources. Just as Saudis wear those 'robe' like clothes, and Americans wear denim jeans (definitely no khakis, those are for molesters of all stripes), ....so too do German citizens wear the clothes you mentioned. Most of Bavaria is actually pretty flat, the mountains are only in the very south. Most of that sort of landscape is in Austria.
