- Railfanning steam trains is a whole different game. Fast paced crazy action is hard to keep up with, but I try! Following the 4449 and Amtrak Heritage unit 156 on an excusion from Portland, Oregon to Wishram, Washington on July 3rd, 2011. While waiting for the westbound return from Wishram, I caught a BNSF Unit Grain with units 5520, 4403 and 5269 at Avery Road. Next, a stack train passes with units 4826, 4500 and 4487.
Let’s keep in touch.

I find it absolutely amazing that a steam locomotive like SP 4449 has so much raw power at its disposal that it can get up to 70mph or so and be carrying another locomotive (essentially dead weight) and more than a dozen fully loaded passenger cars. That's 1930's technology still going strong there!
And it wasn't even beginning to be strained.
vector6977 Exactly! SP 4449 is the perfect example of why I believe steam power is still a viable option for locomotives. The fuel source just needs to be cleaner. Like hydrogen maybe.
I can't imagine anyway to make hydrogen safe.
1993Warbirds,
Ok DINOSAURS 🦕 ROCK!!!
I've loved the 4449 since I was a 5 year old. If there's one thing I've always dreamed about, it's being in the cab of it and blowing it's whistle like crazy at 60 mph! I have an HO scale replica, I found a recording of the whistle and I use it near my replica. It's an awesome engine. To think she (the engine) was made in 1947! That's American steam for ya!
Eric Ramirez Gaming 101 me to
It was built in 1941 not 1947
Sammeeee
All that moving rotating and recip. mass!! Amazing it all stays together!!
oil and grease is your friend and often! lol!
The 4449 and 844 are my two most favorite oil burning steam locomotives
The latter is an oil burner
4449 still uses coal
Don't forget about the equally awesome SP&S 700!
@@theextremeanimator4721 SP 4449 doesn't use coal. It burns motor oil, and the occasional empty coffee cup. Pat Tracey told me this weekend when I got a ride on it.
sp 4449 is my favorite train
great video of it on this excursion
nice catch catching some BNSF frights too
I always thought 611, 844 and daylight should do a meet, the three most beautiful beasts on the rails, would love to see 'me all together
Very good video - superb shots - thanks for sharing!
My favorite locomotive of all time
Chasing trains! Having a good time!
sound the Cotton Belt 819 when the whistle squeeks
That would be awesome!! Thanks!
Its the old" gold coast flyer" one of my all time favorites, what a striking looking train👍
Cool video. I saw the 4449 in Corvallis when, I was a young boy
AMAZING FOOTAGE!!
I rode that trip. That was a good day.
That was a great trip for me as well.
Hm be good to paint 4449,s Consist the matching daylight colors to match 4449 now that will be a beautiful sight to see in the day and at sundown give Amtrak the idea of going with Daylight colors Amtrak will be amazed when they see the daylight colors at sundown with 4449
Sp 4449 está soando o np z6 challenger whistle igual a voz da tia Alice
Sweet vid, lol thats me at 15:50
Sp 4449 going to wishram via columbia river gorge
these steam excursion trains always have a discreet diesel unit behind the locomotive
great job. Good pacing and corner shots. Anyone know why there was a Rio Grande Scenic dome car in the consist?
Nick Valdez cuz there were up here in Oregon looking for a home no one took it so Oregon did and now I can go and look at it cuz its right by omsi and they have nickel plate road up here to so thers your answer to as why the Rio Grande dome car is up in my home town
My favorite train n locomotive
They can’t do these excursions anymore since Amtrak banned charter trains in March 2018. It can only run on a few miles of track in Portland, OR.
so many people think sp 4449 and N&W 611 are rivals
There not they both are old and are famous and the main thing they are steam trains
so stop thinking there rivals there not
I know right...
Nice grammar
Dorothy Frick yeah. The 4449 is equally as famous as the 611. I live in the east, so I see 611 in person, but the videos of 4449 are great.
How about the pere marquette 1225#thepolerexpres
Villager of SmashVille that's my other account this is my main account
Nice video 👍😀
I am a marine engineer with lots of steam experience, including with reciprocating engines. In the beginning of this video they appear to be blowing condensate out of the cylinders. Is that such a problem that they basically have to stop and blow down before proceeding?
+the_frumious_bandersnatch It shouldn't be that much of a problem. Usually only a consideration when they are just starting out on something like a cold morning or when sitting for a long period. In these instances I'm thinking they are exercising good, safe habits, better safe then sorry, and putting on a show at the same time.
They have steam traps just like they do in marine/naval propulsion plants, and until things warm up, the comparatively cold metal causes lots of condensation that the traps let pass.
that's awesome video!!!!
Sherman peabody as sp 4449
Great, great, great video. I'm featuring you on my Channel!
simplemente excelente machine...
14:37. Go speed two. Just like the old days.

July 2011.
Just out of curiousity why does this have an Amtrack Locomotive on it? Do they use it on occasion?
They do that over here in Britain, put a poxy diesel behind a steam loco,
3:31 entitled foamer lol
does anyone know the numbers on that santa fe tank car
I would like to live in Canada, I know that is in USA. I would like to work in the railway how train conductor. I love machines. S2

Los del furgón q clase d animales eran no alcance a ver
Why is the Amtrak there
Mark Camaro To Help The Locomotive
The Amtrak Genesis is there to ether generate power for the passenger cars, help as a spare locomotive incase the steam locomotive fails, or to help with the Dynamic braking
Cracking video, but Amtrak loco spoils it, they should have put the diesel on the rear of the train, or better still why have it at all'
martin wyatt They need it to provide electricity to the passenger cars...
7 people would dislike this??? really?
they have no respect for trains.
john72ss Right?! I mean, I'm a bigger fan of N&W 611, but come on! There is no reason to dislike 4449! Especially that whistle!
Trevor Brown I live in Oregon were its home is and its really beautiful to see that train up close people who hate are just jealous of us train fanatics
Trevor Brown agree
Its true they think that trains are stupid well have I news for you haters how do u think you got your food and cloths not magical fairies trains are the ones who delivered them to warehouses and then trucks then stores so dont be hating our favorite thing in the world

That's very stupid!!!
wish that Amtrak crap wasn't in there...I am not a fan of Govtrak...
SP 4449 was added as a public gathering to see,,,her arrival,,, But she was running on Amtraks Pass÷nger Regular Scheduled train either the Empire Builder,,, Roster TIME table Schedule,,,SHE Helps encourage Thicket Sells and. AMTRAK Ridership,,,
All but a handful of passenger rail services worldwide are funded directly or indirectly through governments. Get over it.
You know that over 90% of them are right? I mean clearly not because you were wrong...But now you know
***** "Over 90% of them are..." what? Please don't be so ambiguous. Thanks.
Run by the government...Don't be so ambiguous? You made a false comment and then didn't go back and read it when I commented...
