Hope this does the trick. They blithely ignore all bread offerings, sweetcorn and stuff. Would love to catch one...even get one to show a shimmering of interest in my bait...

Fantastic Mark, I was hoping the vid would have that effect for some people! There’s got to be thick lip venues out there where it could do some damage but nobody tries it. In my experience I feel like thicks like to take the spinner higher in the water. I usually get them fishing shallow with the bombarda. Let me know how you get on, really interested to hear if it works for you!
Great video, I enjoyed that. I do well on modified aglia spinners using rag on a pennel rig set up in my local harbour (Christchurch) , I've spotted them come right up the river to the Royalty section. Never thought about using the bombardier float, as I tend to lose distance if I'm casting into the wind. Christchurch angling centre has a good video on rag worm vs Isome worms.

I’ve fished Christchurch before at Stanpit and I did well there with the bombarda float and spinner, had some lovely fishing 😁

I've been thinking about having a go for mullet alot lately, my local beach is a big surf beach which is pretty good for schoolie bass so was wondering do you think there will be mullet there aswell? It's also not to far from an estuary mouth so I guess up the estuary would be a good shot aswell as I've seen fish topping there and been told they're most likely mullet
Hello mate, thanks! I talk about the rod in the tackle section of the vid - it’s a Drennan 12 foot twin tip duo 1.5lb test curve rod. I do sometimes use the short lure rod with the bombarda too in a pinch. Any rod you like that casts around 20 grams will work 😁

Thank you! Yes I have encountered line twist from time to time but usually when the trace is already tangled on the bombarda float. I use a swivel at the top of the trace and that usually keeps things well under control 👌
Good video.The worms you put on the hook, are they worms that you buy or that you collect? the worms that we collect on the beaches, lugworms and nereids hold poorly on the hook. In France, on the river, I use a bomb and a normal number 2 mepps spoon and I thread several maggots on the grappling hook and it works very well.

Hi Peter, the bombarda I use in the video is set up on a short piece of 30lb line and sandwiched between two swivels with a bead either side to protect the knot. I’ve just got some bombardas recently though that come ready loaded on wire with a swivel at the hooklength end and these make life a bit easier. They’re called rhino floats and they’re on eBay under the seller name Moore estates.

Hi Sean, thanks for the great feedback! That’s a difficult question as you’ll generally find that every venue has its own hot time. On some, this may be more strongly linked to conditions and tides than time of day, whereas on others time of day can play a more important role. Places like harbours you will often find fish best first thing in the morning and again in the evening. Sometimes they can fish great at night too! Rivers often can fish well all through the day. Golden greys on beaches I find really like the sun and warm water and they love it when the sun has warmed the shallows throughout the day. Afternoon/evening can fish really well for those if it’s been a blazing hot day. It’s a good idea to approach every venue with an open mind and be prepared to put some hours to really nail down when the best times are 👍

Hi mate, you mention other species will take this set up. Obviously bass and flounder. I'm curious about sea trout, the bombarda set I think I'm right in saying was conceived in Scandinavia to fish flies with spinning gear. I fish mainly around Anglesea and see 1000s of STs when lure fishing for bass. I've scaled down me kit in an effort to catch the ST, only ever hooked and lost a single fish. Have you caught or heard about anyone targeting sea trout successfully with this set up?? Great vids btw liked and subbed
Great video, highly informative and refreshingly articulate. You mention the effectiveness of the yellow beads on the unweighted spinner but you seem not to use them on the weighted ones. Is this because it becomes too bulky? Also how long is the spinner trace from the Bombarda swivel? Thanks again for the guidance.
Hi David! You’re right, I’ve never tried the yellow beads on the weighted spinners as it would make the body of the spinner a bit too long for my tastes. There’s no reason it wouldn’t work though! I tend to think these days that the yellow beads are more of a confidence thing for me than something that genuinely makes a massive difference to be honest. It’s something I’ve always done and it’s always worked so I keep on doing it. I used a plain spinner for the golden greys in the vid without yellow beads and it worked just fine. My friends use completely different colours and set ups and catch well on those too so maybe it’s more a case of what you have confidence in and makes you fish better. I vary the length of the trace depending on how deep I want the spinner to run. In shallow water with no current you will want the trace pretty short, like maybe 3 feet. In deeper water with stronger current you will want it longer, maybe 6 feet plus. That’s where the longer rod comes in handy to cast the longer traces out 👍

I mainly fish for mullet in Christchurch Harbour which is on my doorstep but have never tried the Bombarda method for them, mainly using the traditional spinners with ragworm method but I also catch them on the fly which is less reliable in terms of numbers of fish but very rewarding nonetheless. I have used the Bombarda using a small redgill on the point and shrimp imitations on the dropper but have mainly caught small bass whilst hoping for a sea trout. Anyway, looking forward to trying your method for the mullet. If only we had some clear surf beaches around here but we are obviously not far enough west for that.
I used the bombarda and spinner method in Christchurch last year at stanpit and it worked a dream there. The wind was really strong and I couldn’t get the distance just using the spinner on its own. Ended up catching a good few thins and a nice one of 4.5 that gave me one of the best fights I’ve ever had from a mullet! I was there a good 20 minutes/half hour playing it. Hope the method does the business for you 👍
Hi Ian, the short answer to that is that I don’t know! 😅 There likely are thins somewhere in the river but it has no reputation that I know of for fishing for them and I have yet to try it for them myself. What the helford does have, however, is a good head of thick lips and I’ve found these pretty obliging most days! I’ve caught them on float, on the bottom and on the surface there so they will respond to most things. If you really wanted to spin, you could try the spinner for them there - I don’t see any reasons why they wouldn’t take it. If they don’t want that, standard bread based tactics should see you into the fish 😄

Hi Gareth! There are a few specific tips in the golden grey portion of the video near the end but a good one for GGs in the surf is to not waste too much time fishing blind. Get in the surf and keep moving until you see some. These might be fish you can actually see in the water or very often they will show at the top, disturbing the surface. Another good one is that as the tide floods in, the fish will come into very shallow water. You can end up standing up to your thighs in water and casting virtually back onto dry sand to run the spinner past the shoals! Very exciting fishing like that :)

Thanks for the awesome feedback Sam! I’ve only used floating bombardas mate. If I wanted to cast a good way and fish deeper I would just use a heavier spinner rather than turn to a sinking bombarda👌

Hi Sam, cheers mate. Is the bait spinning while staying straight in the water or is it spinning in a big circle pattern? If it’s spinning straight then you don’t need to worry too much about that as the fish will still take it but if it’s spinning in a big loop that means you’ve got a kink or bend in the trace somewhere or part of the bait is overhanging the bend of the hook. The bait has to finish at the end of the shank and not go round the bend at all. You can leave a bit of tail trailing if you want but it has to leave the hook at that point. If you’re still having trouble, you can always reduce the size of the bait. You only really need a small section of worm, just a couple of inches. I’ve gotten into the habit over time of putting a fair bit more on and pinching bits off as the fish peck at it to avoid having to bait up as often 😅

Also some of my spoons I’ve modified and I just noticed that I had the beads too tightly packed which prevented the blade from spinning freely on the wire. So I’ve removed one bead and it now seems to be ok.
Hi Matt! I did wonder when somebody would ask that! 😁 I use size 4 Aberdeen’s if I’m using king rag and size 6 if I’m using maddies. If I’m using a pennel hook, it will be a coarse hook in a size 6 or 8. I bend the eye on these a bit so they sit nice on the trace and keep everything straight 👍

Many thanks for the spinner making video mate. I've made a few up now 👍 I've had a couple of quick sessions now down the camel but I'm not getting any hook ups yet! Plenty of follows and the odd pluck on the worm but the buggers just won't fully commit for me yet! I will persist though!! In your opinion, is the pennel hook set up a massive advantage for power isome or could I do without it do you think? I've had a couple of quick sessions now down the camel but I'm not getting any hook ups yet! Plenty of follows and the odd pluck on the worm but the buggers just won't fully commit for me yet!
I will persist though!! In your opinion, is the pennel hook set up a massive advantage for power isome or could I do without it do you think?
I seem to struggle to have a really straight worm with the pennel
