Many times, I hear people say that graphics don't matter and that only gameplay counts towards making a game great. I disagree with this.
There are some games out there with such graphical problems, it can seriously spoil the experience. Today, I'm taking a look at the games that will test the faith of even the most devout "gameplay whores". Wow, never thought I'd say that.

I actually thought I was the only one that often put the brightness higher than recommended
I definitely do it too. I prefer to be able to see my games, thanks
horror games indeed. and I just bought second hand hdr monitor to enhance my unfinished games experience. hdr slider and indeed in its name high dynamic range did perform a lot better than sdr or bt.709 tv stuff, but hdr suffers from the shitty yellow effect when you are running on desktop just like gtaiv original (I love colder colors peqrsonally). Most game and online streamed films with fine tuned hdr did get an obvious enhancement on the color yellow (sun ray for example) or green (foliage), but White and Black depends, mostly it would get a more balanced and realistic effect when it was fine tuned. Guess I will get another better hdr400 monitor later for better high nits support instead of a entry level hdr10 one, I will keep the hdr10 because it's time to use a backup 16:9, maybe my little desk can't handle a bigger 21:9 monitor
also esports games are painful when you can't see enemies in the dark. that's unfair, it is not foliage or something that hides enemies and you would suspect you had skill issues or just headphones not working well. what's more annoying is that to go over this, you had to tune up digital brightness in gpu control panel, turn of ambient occlusion in game, also most importantly and unbearable one, get a better monitor which supports the function of shadow enhancement and dark scenes plus (I made a random name 💀)but once you get it you know what I mean and what these options do. Usually they can't be used with hdr so money is inevitably wasted
The concept of that last game honestly looks really fun, but the awful camera ruined it.
ikr, it has potential, but that stupid camera
Some guy did a speedrun on it on AGDQ, maybe check that out.
20:09 lsd simulation game that secretly passed the censorship and made it to snes basically 😂
Stunt Race has those borders because the hardware wasn’t very powerful, and without them the frame rate would be even worse. And Doom on the SNES does run and look better than that, but it doesn’t work properly in emulators and has a lot of visual artefacts.
Yeah, most emulators have difficulty with the SNES port of doom, it should not have those coloured spots, and it should run slightly faster. Try the most recent versions, and see if it's any different.
That being said, it's not the only Doom port with graphics troubles, the 3DO version comes to mind, with it either having even worse framerate, or Squint-O-Vision depending on how you set up the screen size.
And as long as I've got Doom on my mind, I'm fairly certain the 32X port of Doom probably qualifies for "Don't Leave My Ears Alone", they absolutely butchered the music in that port.
@@Aquasition1 you can run Doom on anything, so i dont get why would someone want to emulate the snes port
@@Vi3Voide only real reasons are 1. Just for the hell of it, 2. Testing emulator accuracy and compatibility
@@Aquasition1 The 32X version of Doom has music? I thought it was just a random compilation of fart sounds
@@kaams224 When some people say it sounds like sh!t, they usually mean figuratively.
But with 32X Doom, when someone says it sounds like sh!t, it's meant literally XD.
I thought the music in Mo Hawk was decent until the stage where it turns into a screeching cacophony of noise. At least Hoi's stage of seizures had surprisingly awesome music.
10:52 I hate it when the recommended brightness can mess you up like that, it's practically a handicap at that point
I'd definitely love to see the "Don't leave my (insert sense) alone!" series.
Examples:
Don't leave my eyes alone! Beautiful VG sights!
Don't leave my ears alone! Amazing sound(track)s!
Don't leave my mind alone! Interesting and captivating dreams!
Don't leave my nose alone! Enticing scents!
If I recall he did do a leave my nose alone which was what certain areas of a game could smell like
@@deft__12 Yeah, it was an odd spinoff for sure, but a nice one to have.
@@deft__12 "Leave my Lungs Alone!" was also mentioned in the Leave my Nose Alone video. Would be interesting to see which water levels would've been covered in it.
There were some don’t leave my ears alone
There has been a Don't leave my eyes alone before
these series' never get old
this channel is a nice mix of retro video game content. its one of those hidden gems I was glad I was recommended
@@mcmcribblit9603 been a fan of gits for a while now. started watching around 2014. i just really dug all the miscellaneous stuff he would talk about and i got introduced to games i never even knew existed
unlike the graphics in the video

"Good God, I HATE fighting Snake."
_Ah, I see you are a fighter of culture as well._
That last game looks like some little kids just wanted to use all the effects the SNES was capable of.
*some hardcore SNES fanboys wanted to have the system grind the Genesis under its heel
8:17
Back then most people owned SNES so THAT Doom was as it good as it gets.
Yes, we have to remember that in the mid 90's most families didn't have a PC and even the cheapest ones were quite expensive, the market was not as varied as it is today. If you wanted to play Doom without owning a PC the SNES port was the cheapest option.
a more recent example of eye liquifying i've found was in Everhood. early in the game, and at the end of its demo, you fight a bunch of gnomes that decide they can take this battle to real life, because the first thing i said a little bit into the fight was "ow". the visuals there are genuinely just *terrible* to look at, to the point where the devs had to patch in a hand-crafted photosensitivity option so their game wouldn't cause headaches and seizures. it's only made worse when you find out that the devs put the gnome fight through a epilepsy test and were """surprised""" that it registered as eye-gougingly bad. how in the world are you *surprised* all that wasn't safe
basically, don't play Everhood without the photosensitivity option on, because the gnomes weren't the only battle that raised these concerns
The devs were likely trying to capture reality bending and to add more challenge and distraction to the fight, which is understandable, plus people without epilepsy sometimes don't notice or think about if something will cause it, which sucks but is a fact for many things. They still should've included a photosensitivity option from the start, though, since it is still pretty heavy on the eyes, which is extremely obvious to anybody who's anybody.
OMG, that final game was a torture! However, I played Stunt Race FX a lot last year and enjoyed it. Yeah, the graphics were ruining my eyes, and when I stopped playing my vision was blurred for the rest of the day, but I can forgive bad graphics when I have a fun gameplay, cute cars and an awesome soundtrack.
2:56 is basically just that one Porygon episode.
5:18 The Lich Yard in Shovel Knight employs a similar gimmick here, and to this day, I still can't play that level.
Holy hell Mo Hawk & Headphone Jack looks like what I imagine my mom sees Sonic games like.
That last one... oh god... I don't even have word for that...
I'm glad you mentioned Snake's C4. I couldnt get myself to play him in Brawl because of how awfully tiny are the C4s and the grenades, lol
east is south, north is left, right is pudding, pudding is orange, bees are wax
I believe the reason why they did the flashing thing was to emulate an explosion since games started in the 1970s they possibly tried to replicate it and of course it failed
And this is one of the reasons why you should do a full playtrought of your game before releasing it or at least experimenting most things
I feel that another good candidate for this series would be the levels in the NES 1942 that take place over bright green land. Where you fight bright green planes.
It's not as fun as it sounds.
It doesn't sound good
@@falcolom It's not nearly as bad in the Arcade version at least, where the land is more muted in color and the planes stand out much better.
In Doom 64, what causes the eye-searing lighting is turning the "Enviromental Brightness" setting to the max. You can have the regular brightness higher, but turn the enviromental down, and it'll look fine.
Snake with his tiny-ass grenades and C4 is still far more fun to play against than swordies.
Especially with shitty internet
IMO, Creepy endings, Leave my eyes alone, Worst levels ever, and NPC investigation are boys, and Tails Abuse, Leave my ears alone, and leave my mind alone are girls
Also why does Optimus Prime go down from a single bullet?
That's Ultra Magnus and the reason he is so weak was because in that time they made games harder to make them last longer.
I assumed that was the dev’s reason but it’s so nonsensical and just anti-fun in a Transformers game. They’re supposed to be super powerful fighting robots, I would’ve been so disappointed if I played this as a kid
Good news is I don't have seizures. Bad news is it doesn't stop me from feeling dizzy......
Maybe if Mohawk was realease on the SNES online, it won't crash easily
"east is south, north is left, right is pudding, pudding is orange"
why did i laugh at that so hard
Honestly the closest thing I ever got to an flashlight of multiple colours as death animation of an boss was probably the stars that shoot out of bosses when defeated in Mario and Luigi Dream team.
But those are actually pretty mind you.
In Smash, if they had a customizable outline/border option for fighters and their assets like in For 3DS, I think your problems would be fixed. At least you have that P1 marker, and most competitive matches are more zoomed in and clear anyways.
2:57)
Suddenly, Electric Soldier Porygon
That last game legitimately gave me a headache.
“The only time you can see the ground is when lightning flashes in the background.” Realism, doesn’t always equal fun. The only time I enjoyed a lightning to see gimmick is in FNAW2, where it flashed every 15 seconds and it was a flash that slowly faded away.
2:56 I bet someone from the Simpsons staff played this game and got his inspiration for that Japanese episode
i had to pause the video at times to let my eyes rest
If you think the original Spot game was bad, Spot goes to Hollywood for the Sega Genesis made me throw up as a kid because I wasn't used to moving a character around in 3D.
Woah! I remember Mohawk and Headphone Jack from Awful Games Done Quick 2019: ruclips.net/video/tOt1CxMLw1A/видео.html
That is still one of my absolute favorites AGDQ, from the amazing commentary, tornado spinning pipes, crowd participation, “OOOORB!!!”, and even a heartfelt appreciation for an ambitious game. I totally need to go rewatch it.
Old Video Games: Hey, hey you, do you want a seizure ?! No ??? Well, tough shit you are getting one.
*First game is King's Knights*
*Remembers Toby*
*Also remembers Pr**#J**#r**#d*
Oh boy, 'Rot in Hell, Toby, indeed'.
You don't have to use hashtags
Ah, the abuse of the twinkling effect to make your game more colorful.
4:32
Unless you know the continue code (A+B+START).
3:43 reminds me of an old arcade game...i forget the name, but it was VERY similar to "UN squadron".
the FIRST boss has a tail-gun that shoots small projectiles that move at the EXACT same speed as the scrolling background, making them almost impossible to see!
now THAT'S a dirty trick!
great, love these videos.
can we have more ear-bleeding in the near future?
Action 52 did the tiny bullets now the robot game has to do it too.
Call me crazy, but I could never get the hang of Joker and I don’t get why he’s so broken. His attacks’ hitboxes are ridiculously tiny and I have a really hard time hitting with him.
Well yeah without arsene, with Arsene he got reach and killpower of an heavyweight alongside his normal tools: 2 different projectiles, combo game and being F A S T
Basically Shiek if she had DK damage output
@@rambo4916 Joker REALLY plays nothing like Sheik.
@@captainmarsh3664 Same idea behind the character: Fast, ninja-like. Of course, with the caveat that Joker is actually a thief, but still. I doubt he meant that he's like Sheik, I think he was just using the fact that they have similar character builds. Like comparing Shiek to Fox, they don't play similarly, but they have the same kind of build, which is just fast.
Not only is he fast, but he's also really hard to hit because of how he moves and how tony his hurtboxes are
Camping with gun is basically a death sentence for slow characters like Incineroar
"You're not 3D, so stop trying to be and stick to what you best at"
That's exactly what I'm thinking when people show me some crappy Live2D/Spine animations XD
As a Joker main, I would like to sincerely apologize for the eyeballs of whoever I fight against...
That thumbnail. Oh god
Maybe the Snes emulator was not only messing up Doom for Snes, but also Mohawk and Headphone Jack.
Wanna know the ultimate Leave My Eyes Alone match in Smash Bros? Have Snake, Mr. Game and Watch, Joker, and John Cena (Mii Brawler lol!) all fight against each other in an invisible Special Smash…
In Smash bros defense, the Mario bros stage is not fun to play, making it rarely played on from my experience.
New Pork City, Shadow Moses, Final Destination, Kongo Jungle, Brinstar (depths), Fourside, Balloon Fight, Castlevania. However, it is kind of inevitable certain stages won't go with certain alts. White alts won't be good on pictochat, Magicant is not ideal for Jiggly and then we have Mementos which randomly chooses one of 3 colors before each match (unless you turn off all the music from 2 of the Persona games). Mementos has a chance to be a disadvantageous stage for red alts, or for yellow characters like the 'chus and Pac-Man, or for blue characters like default Mega Man or Sonic and Greninja.
6:41 I can relate.
What’s the song at the very end of every WhoIsThisGit video? I really want to know
Ah, I was wondering if Mohawk & Headphone Jack would get noticed and end up here; of course, I you want the ultimate version of Leave My Eyes Alone Mohawk look up the now 8 year old video "Why RUclips's shake correction is the best feature ever" for one of the greatest visual mistakes you'll ever see. Because yes, the game CAN be made more nauseating somehow with even the HUD warping and waving.
(WARNING: THIS MAKES THE VIDEO SO MUCH WORSE; THE UPLOADER WAS ALSO SPEEDRUNNING THE GAME, RESULTING IN FAR MORE CAMERA TURNS ETC. IF SEEING THE GAME NORMALLY MADE YOU NAUSEOUS, DO NOT LOOK UP WHAT THE BETA VERSION OF SHAKE CORRECTION DID TO IT.) Your eyes, brain, and body will hate you for watching as even the game borders get pushed 20% into the normal game window.
10:10 There's a level in Alien Soldier that, in my opinion, pulls this off way better. The spaceship you're in is very dark, almost pitch-black at times, but firing your weapons has them light the way.
Also, the level itself isn't too difficult, even with the darkness, until you get to the boss, a ball with an arm it uses like a Grappling hook, and an eye that shoots lasers if I remember correctly.
Edit: It wasn't lasers, but a pattern of three bullets
Also, the boss's attacks provide light, too, particularly the one where it grapples the other side of the screen.
Here's a clip of the level: ruclips.net/user/clipUgkx7M271ORfj27HSa9WmNNgMd6pUUDANueG
Are you running Doom on the.. oh nevermind.
left is pudding and pudding is orange XD
I’ll use that at work and see the confusion XD
Sometimes, i think of how hard a life of a blind person would be... I read the warning in the disclaimer in the beginning and thought: Oh, the blind wouldn't be able to read this!
But after a second i realised that they wouldn't even see the graphics too
dear god my eyes
2:53 AVGN flashbacks
I played Star Fox 64 (aka LylatWars) before I played the original Star Fox. I found the choppiness of the original to make that game difficult to play, as I was spoiled by the much smoother graphics and animation of the 64-bit sequel. I still was able to beat the SNES Star Fox... but it wasn't easy!
As for Stunt Race FX, I played that game a lot in middle school and it was one of my favourite racing games. The choppiness didn't bother me there, because it was all I knew. Years later, SRFX has definitely not aged well in the graphics department. But it had great music! I loved the Night Owl theme in particular. Super Mario Kart-- which came out two years earlier-- was much smoother visually, and made very good use of its Mode 7 graphics, while Stunt Race FX tried real 3D polygon based graphics before technology really advanced well enough to make that graphical style really look good.
So... what do you think of the e3 presentation?
It says something that even this video strains my eyes, with the last two examples being especially bad. While Demon Sword on the NES was one of my favorites growing up, its title screen is a double combo for Leave My Ears/Eyes alone with its grating song and lightning. Luckily you can skip it by pressing start, though some of the early stage backgrounds can be nasty too.
Come to think of it you could likely do an entire LMEA focused on lightning.
11:59 fov is a painful thing to do. I've experienced a 32:9 monitor at a gameshow but it still can't handle high fov very well. The screen stretched too much and made the corners hard to see clearly. It could easily tear your eyes up and made you feel tired. And there's many fov calculators out there but i still can't figure out which occasion is the horizontal fov and which is vertical. Too much to learn and distinguish basically, if there is value you could follow it with your aspect ratio, if it is just a slider, good luck finding your unnumbered one. well it is a combination of both monitor and software algorithm
2:01 fyi this is a 1986 game actually. Don't know why publisher chose to localize it sooooo late into 1988 or 1989 or some time, just like Hydillide (i mispelled i seriously can't remember this game name, which released in 1984 in Japan and 1988 in Usa. it was mentioned by avgn, and he "diarrhea"ed the spit out of it). So it being shitty and creative and outdated at the same time, is actually forgiveable. Hell i don't even think Zelda, Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest 1 is revolutionary nough, so i would literally skip this nes knight game. My standard is up to high because things like smb1 and contra, gradius existed
6:56 oh hell this is so untouchable. I actually emulated this shit on emulator with it overclocked. Some guy did add some overclocked physical chipset into stunt race fx and it is hard to do. The chipset ain't very stable most of the time but obviously seeing it getting a 5 fps improvement to make it 20fps-ish is kind of an achievement, but modification ends here, this game can never readh 30fps on official hardware and modified cart hardware😅 for me 30-40fps with ray tracing nowadays are playable, even with some dlss fg gimmicks which 30 percent to 40 percent of a chance it might help plenty to make it not feeling like a 24fps. But snes 3d games, wow, homies, 15 fps average, such headache shit, even monitors with variable refresh rate could only handle 30 fps at minimum to provide a smoother low fps experience with no vsync tearing issues and heavy delay, but man, snes is beyond the normal thing and even advanced tech today to save. Actually i can imagine this shit painful to play on an already obscure crt monitor with high refresh rate but serious ghosting. Ppl are not to meant to play counter strike 120 fps but at least they could try 75fps, but not 15fps!
9:17 bro just ignored Jaguar version 💀 no music
10:00 maybe this one ability means nightvision and invulnerability how nice
To be fair, people who say "graphics don't matter" usually are talking to graphics whores who think a game is good only because it runs in 4K HD 60FPS, even if the game play is cat shit. Though, perhaps there are some people who have no badness threshold whatsoever...that would not be the right perspective, either.
I didn't really have a problem with Stunt Race FX when I was younger - I think this is modern-day capabilities having an influence. But yeah, the choppiness doesn't do it many favors in this day and age.
That train stage was horrid
I dont care how a game looks unless it physically hurts to look at, fallout new vegas is an absolutely amazing game but all the orange hurts my eyes
I recently replayed Starfox for the SNES on my Switch for the first time since I was a kid and hooooooooo boy it looks rough. I tapped out after the first level. Most of those classic SNES titles really hold up well but that one aged as well as bread.
The visuals are a large part as to why Star Fox 64 was a reboot of the franchise. Shigeru Miyamoto himself stated in an interview that he was dissatisfied with the visuals.
6:34 I agree with this. I can spot the difference between 30 and 60 FPS like night and day and I hate it.
Stunt Race FX works like a charm with overclocked cpu on bsnes.
The first game make my head really sick watch that, and the last well idk, it looks fresh for gameplay but, the CAMERA and music, make my head dizzy -_-" to fast and like going around to much
9:06 Well, it CAN run Doom, so that's good.
Porygon sends its regard
If Tekwar isn't in this series already then it really needs to be. Every frame of that game is a sin but there is ONE particular part that might actually fucking blind you.
the literal thumbnail makes me agree
What is it with trains and awful game design?
I'll never be able to play Starfox SNES. unplayable chicken scratch that gives me a headache.
Wow. I'd read about it in Nintendo Power, but actually seeing it… Mo Hawk and Headphone Jack is, like, the most European game ever.
And HOLY HELL do the Genesis Cool Spot graphics SUUUUUUCK. Flatter than Spot himself.
But one can certainly HEAR why one would play the SNES DOOM. That's a Caco-phony of the GOOD kind. €(•{
Let’s freaking goooooo
I enjoy
ow
the reason stunt race had that border is so less of the screen had to be drawn upon so the game could run faster
as for why they made it so ugly i cant tell you
