Can you give me any idea of how to get that sound from a Fender Mustang GT 40 Modelling amp. There are hundreds of presets but I dont know where to start with the signal chain, etc. Anything near will do!! Thanks
Hey Robert, I've never used a Mustang so I can't help you much here. I was just using a Roland modelling amp set to "Black Face", which is Fender style, with the reverb turned on. That's it really. Sorry I can't be of further help, Matt
Hey Robert, you might try setting to the "Brown Sound" maybe dial up the volume a good bit and turn down the master so you get it near break up. You don't have to clear the room that way. Maybe add a little extra mid and bass and that should get you pretty close. Sometimes Ry Cooder goes way deep into break up and distortion but most often, from what my ear hears, he's teetering on the edge of a crunchy sounding tweed. I use a Katana 100W now for almost everything and this seems to get me pretty close. Hope that helps. These are nice little amps though aren't they! Evidence of that is that everyone is "out of stock" if you wanted to buy one. Have fun. Let us know if this sounded like you wanted.
Great nails man! Wish I could keep mine looking like that. Life keeps getting in the way. Are those your own? (You know what I mean, your real nails, not fake ones.) And if they're not your real ones, can you tell me how you take fake ones and make them stick so they don't rip off while you're playing? I don't really like finger or thumb picks very much and would love to just have my right hand nails look like yours. James Taylor uses fake nails but I also think he has the luxury of living a lifestyle that doesn't involve doing hard work every day with his hands. Thanks for any advice and thanks for your lessons.
Hey Robert.I have acrylic nails on my right hand. My nails used to break all the time so I though I'd try it and it was a real life-changer.I couldn't play without them now. So much more attack, volume and sustain. I get them done at a nail salon and they cost $5 per nail. They last at least a month and are like a rhino's horn. I highly recommend it for finger picking. Where are you based and do you have any particular songs/ styles you'd like me to look at? I'm putting another series of videos and I'm open to suggestions. Cheers, Matt.
Played guitar for 44 years first time I ever heard another guitarist discussing how good someone's nails look on an instructional video. A Ry Cooder vid no less, you could have asked on a Prince video or even a Kiss video but a Ry vid hmmm ah well life goes on.
Matt Dwyer Blues and Roots Guitar That’s a tough question. I love so many of Rys songs. I’ve alway love “How can a poor man stand such times and live”. Especially the live version from the 87 concert in Santa Cruz.
Hey Keshav, thanks for watching. The pickups in that guitar are Tonerider Rebel 90s. They're a P90 but in a humbucker size. They're a good pickup and really affordable.
The rich tone on that Strat adds to the soulfulness of this demonstration. Thx
Thanks Sideman . The Strat is fitted with two P90 pickups instead of the usual Strat pickups which makes it sound a lot fatter and warmer.
It‘So Great your Videos. Tanks a lot
Outstanding lesson on how to get that Ry Cooder sound! Nailed it Matt!
Wonderful!
Thanks so much.
Incredible, just subbed, cheers from New Zealand
Great intro to open-D. Great tone and playing!
Thankya Zac. High praise indeed.
After i listened to Sister Morphine for the first time, I needed to learn more about Ry!
Are those Humbucker size P90s?

Will you be doing more Ry Cooder lessons?
Hi Stephen. Yes, I'll be doing More Ry Cooder. Is there a particular song you'd like to know more about?
