    This is indeed one o' the shinin' stars in the Jethro Tull catalog. I was one o' those lucky ones who saw them perform it live in 1970-a year before the studio version was released. Nobody knew what to expect 'n we were blown away! Check out the live version from the Isle Of Wight Festival 1970. I guarantee you've never seen anythin' like it before or since, got me? Ian at his peak...

    A masterpiece by JT from a masterpiece album by the band. Musically wonderfully worked out. Adapted to the song's lyrics (the discrepancy between pure faith and the questionable institution of the church), it is mainly in minor tones, but there are also major chords in between, as a kind of glimmer of hope.

    I highly recommend a live video of Locomotive Breath that gives a view of what Jethro Tull does live, including their comedic performance elements while maintaining excellence of music. It begins with keyboardist John Evan dramatically playing the piano intro as on the studio version with added elaborations. Each band member gets some attention in the video. Ian Anderson, in addition to singing, flute, and conducting takes a turn on organ while the keyboardist wanders around the stage. It is an excerpt from an encore in 1977 that continues to completion with the British anthem “Land of Hope and Glory” and the final refrain of “Twelve Backdoor Angels." It is RUclips described as “Jethro Tull - Locomotive Breath (live 1977)” 9:49 with excellent sound quality for live in that era.

    Tull is just so great it’s almost s unfair to compare them to anyone. Try some of their incredible acoustic pieces such as Skating Away, Life’s a Long Song, Up the Pool, Witches Promise,etc…it gets no better.

  • @michaelbaucom4019
    @michaelbaucom4019 11 месяцев назад +9

    My favorite Tull song, and, IMHO, still the best Tull song. Proggy, theatrical, dramatic. Ian Anderson using subtle changes that are powerful in effect(a Tull trademark). And when Martin Barre(his usual stellar self)comes in with electric guitar...My God indeed...borderline metal. The chanting against the flutes reinforces the lyrical theme, besides having the value of contrast against the rest of the song.
    Obviously, the lyrics are a tirade/rant against the hypocrisy that organized religion often(and sadly) exhibits. Our host's interpretation works too. Genius song, but, that is what Ian Anderson usually does
    Live versions are fire, you get to see Ian Anderson's showmanship/charisma on full display

    many people think of ian anderson as the crazy one legged flute player front man of TULL. well let me tell you that he is a simply incredible acoustic guitarist not to mention his spine tingling vocals. one concert i saw him in was in '72 on their 'thick as a brick' tour in springfield ,mass. he wowed the crowd with his guitar prowess and i would not have complained if he had just gone on all night !

      @@retroreactions....Well you will be blown away. But it is good to start from the studio songs. Too many starts from the live videos and their attention gets absorbed by Ian Anderson's character. Also in the studio versions the songs were much refined with a lot of overdubs and great production.

    Well Brandon, you've managed to review yet another one of my absolute favorites. And now you know why this deep and ominous tune was so heavily requested. If there were ever a song to get me into Tull, it was " My God. " But the same could be said for almost anything off
    "Aqualung." And I can see how you were understandably taken by it's aura. It's definitely quite unforgettable.

    My God! 😉 Whatever Tull you can listen to it must be great, and this can't be missed too. Unique as usual. As I began to listen with you I was trapt, hooked by their sonic journey. Acoustic then Rock and Blues, eloquent voice, his flute is like another ethereal voice, captivating, powerful. I heard this on Aqualung before, but forgot about, but what a pleasure to hear it again like a first time. It deserves your platinum reward so easy. 👏🙏 Remember, my favorite were "broadsword" who were released in early 80's and have whole another sound filled with electronic keyboards 🎹 but it's still Jethro Tull, and it's good and epic. Cheers Brandon!

      @@retroreactions.... Tull already had a keyboarder for long time but he was somehow discreet and overshadowed by Ian. But with some changes of Lineup in early 80's he got Eddy Jobson (from Roxy Music and UK) on the Album "A" considered like an transitional solo recording more from Ian Anderson himself, but Eddy happened just to be a guest for a year. So he were replaced later by a young keyboard wizard called John-Peter Vettese from 1982 to 1985 were he participated to "Broadsword and the beast" then "Under Wraps". This last album wasn't so much loved by the old fans... Also a kind of solo album "Walk into the light" were he experimented more electronic sounds trying to compete with the electro Pop that came out everywhere.

    Great song….it’s been awhile since I’ve listened to it. Aqualung is such a great album! I know you like medieval style music, which is why I’ve recommended a couple of songs from The Broadsword and the Beast album before. I know Tull will get their turn again. My go to theater, The Arcada, has had Martin Barre there before, but I’ve yet to see him. Maybe next time? This week has been flying…. Christmas is in just four days!!😮

  • @goytabr
    @goytabr 11 месяцев назад +4

    This is one of the gems from "Aqualung", much better than the title song. But now I emphatically recommend that you listen to a live rendition of it. This is one of those songs that grow a lot when played live, and it's even better seeing it on video.
    Some time ago I saw a video of a classical flutist who was not only very young, but had always lived in a musical bubble and had never heard of Jethro Tull until a lot of her channel viewers started requesting it. I'm not sure if the song was "My God", but I think so. Anyway, it had a long flute solo that became even longer with Ian improvising live. It melted her brain!
    At first she reacted disapprovingly, like: "One does not do that, it's one of the first things we're taught!" Or: "Oh no, you can't play standing on one leg, that's disrespectful and impairs your concentration!" Then, as the solo progressed, her mouth just kept opening wide: "Jeez, this is so difficult to do!" Or: "How does he get that sound?" Or: "When does he breathe?" Or: "How can he vocalize and play at the same time?"
    By the end, she was totally in awe and Ian had earned her total respect. She said she saw him doing things that she didn't even know were possible with a flute, and that he broke all the rules and wrote his own to replace them, something only a true genius can do. And like her, you've only dipped your toes in Jethro Tull so far... They have at least three albums to which I give platinum record awards from start to finish: "Stand Up" (unfortunately, from 1969, but a good tip for your next 60s Week - at least their legendary rendition of J. S. Bach's "Bourrée" - and a must for a private audition), "Thick as a Brick" (I know, it's another elephant in your room already), and "Songs from the Wood" (my all-time favorite). But I'm sure you'll discover all that and more with time.

      I would guess that Ian goes off on the flute even more in the live setting... Nice story. Glad she latched on to his brilliance on first watch. Life is better with Ian Anderson's flute. My favorite is Living In The Past (but it's too short - designed for playing on radio back in the day). I get a kick out of the reactions from classically trained flautists. They're always amazed at his work, but then mention how he plays the flute wrong. Well, Ian taught himself how to play flute. When Ian's daughter picked up the flute, she got her dad to play it correctly.

    The Whistler, Songs From The Wood and The Witch's Promise are my favourite too because of that theatrical flavour and some druide around the fire storytelling manner - little mad, little tricky, little secret and all pierced through with the breath of Nature. It's owesome.
