Peugeot 306s are extremely underrated cars. I remember when I bought my Phase 1 306 1.4 for not very much money, various people asked me "why did you buy that instead of a Golf or Civic?", citing the usual tropes about French reliability and it being 20+ years old.
2.5 years later, the little car still hasn't missed a beat, the only issues I've had with it were replacing the cooling fan (broken when I bought it), the battery, and a couple of electrical issues that were easily sorted by cleaning a few contacts. Anyone who's sat in the car has commented how comfortable and spacious it is inside, and it's a hoot to drive even though it 'only' has the 1.4 TU engine.
Would buy another 306 (or either of its Citroen cousins, the ZX and Xsara) in a heartbeat, though next time it will probably be a D-Turbo, HDI, or one of the sportier petrol models.

I have the exact same car, phase 1, 1.4 petrol engine, from 1995. Style edition.
The cooling fan sensor died, otherwise it has never let me down. It was my first car, got it when I was 18 and now I'm 25 and I still drive it everyday.

I love the half leather seats, the alloy wheels, the 1.6 engine that can still zoom past newer cars on fast roads. My Brother also says it looks cool still even though it’s 23 years old which I agree with. 🚙💙

Totally agree! I loved my 306, still sad that my mum crashed it and it had to be scrapped 😢 the engine was perfect. It was great fun. It had seen some adventures too! It drove around a festival (randomly gave Kevin Bridges a lift round the site), a film set, went in a car lift, helped me and friends move house a couple of times (amazing how much I got in there!) and put the BMW drivers to shame in the snow 😂 I'd love to buy one again as a classic if I get the spare cash.

However, so far it never broke down.

I own a 2001 1.6 estate. After daily driving a renault master campervan, thousands of brand new vehicles (worked in automotive and transportation.) This car pleasantly surprised me. Had to sell the van out of necessity.
This small little 98hp car is quite fun to drive. I loved driving my turbocharged s60 with a measly 210hp . But this car proved that a low powered vehicle can provide lots of fun. We had snow in the Netherlands. The little thing loves to powerslide and go sideways. It performed better in the parking lot than all the huge expensive bmw's, mercs and even a skyline.
On the road it just loves to corner quickly and hard. Even on stock suspension. It's a fun car to drive and surprised me a lot. I'll probably keep it as a second car when I get the funds for a more powerful vehicle. Until then it will keep me smiling with it's timeless looks and fun driving character.

I bought a 1995 306 D Turbo for £50 as a stopgap many years ago and ended up keeping it for 3 years! My main car now is a 1998 306 GTI-6 that I've had for 5 years. It's now the oldest car I own, yet it's my go-to car that gets used every day all year round. Currently on 176k, it lives a hard life yet it keeps soldiering on! Unstoppable in the snow and an impressive wading depth thanks to the air intake being very high up. Aside from routine maintenance, all it's needed is a throttle cable and an exhaust mount, both of which cost buttons.

Was modified in Phase 2 model. The electronic fan control had to be replaced very often. Wheel bearings did not last more than 3 years in city traffic. Anyway, I was very sad when my 306 was destroyed by a drunk teenage crash kid.

One thing I will say about rust, on the 5 doors at least, if they start to show any sign of bubbling paint halfway up the quarter panel have a good look behind the trim in the boot. Our old 5 door never had any advisories for rust, but behind that trim the body was literally gone. And that is where the rear belts attach, the reel fell off ours when I pulled the trim back it was that bad. Salt/dirt trapped above the arch liners was the cause & also why the MoT never picked up on it. If you drive in winter best to remove the rear liners IMO and just keep it cleaned out under there whenever you wash the top side! Gonna upload pics on 306oc later if you want to see how bad it really was.

    • @PiggyPower
      @PiggyPower  3 года назад

Yup. Common. Not specific to the 5dr at all. Same with the 3. I raise it in the next video... It's to do with owners usually. . . Removing the trim.

I've had all three phase models and I can say my Phase 1 got the most admiring looks ( M0TH). It had TSW Blade 15x7 ET 35 alloy wheels, which seem to have a love / hate thing online in the forums, but I like them although they can look horrible on some brands and models of car. My Phase 1 had those lovely velour seats that were like heaven to sit on. Currently I am on a Phase 2 in Cherry Red. That's a personal decision that I can't really weigh in on, even if I knew you're situation in life. It's a fun car that's for sure. With very low miles like yours it's likely to give you many years of fun. Just keep up with the servicing. Belts need doing at age not just miles. Fluid changes kept up. Depends where you are in Australia but in damp countries where they salt the road in winter, they can suffer with rust but only if the car has been jacked up in the wrong spot or arch liners removed. So worth checking on those.
Otherwise they are very very reliable.

I bought my gti-6 in 2005 and i still have her to this day. Unfortunately she's been on the drive for the last 9 years under a cover, due to having too many children! Breaks my heart seeing the wheels peeking out under the cover, but she still gets a good wash every year.
There were only a few bits to do when i took it off the road, but i'm curious to know if there is anything to look out for with it being only under a cover during the elements. tbh I'm kind of expecting things to have seized, maybe bushes need replacing, or perished seals, i'm not too sure. I've heard the rear beam could be a problem? I can only see a bit of surface rust underneath but who knows what i might find when i can eventually get working on it

      (75 - 212bhp)
      and 4x 1.8 diesels

      3 & 5 door hatch
      5 door estate
I really like the 306. Especially the pre-facelift.
I had a 306 XTDt and it was a great overall package. Very well kitted out for a '93 car and was very comfortable and handled really well.

Don't worry I know all about the focus, and yes, they rust. Sills badly and all the suspension at the back too. Usually so bad that the rear suspension components have to be torched off if needed.
I'll give an example of why those engines were a little meh..
And ST170... 170bhp from w VVT 2.0?? The 306 made the same power without VVT!
1.8 diesel....and engine designed and hardly changed since the late 70s!
I'd take an old 306 over a MK1 focus any day!
306s are are rare to see about now...but. I see probably 20 of them v 1 MK1 focus on the road...which tells you a lot!

The first check I did with my multimeter was to see if the motor was receiving power.
Stupidly I left the wiper switch turn on and when trying to get the relay off, to check that, unfortunately, I created a short and saw a spark.
when trying to start the car, the second click of the ignition, all the lights on the dash fade, and if I turn something on like lights, indicators, etc most of the electrical things (door light and dash lights start flashing and acting bonkers.
There are no blown fuses, as I've checked all the ones under the steering wheel and in a box that's inside the engine.
The battery is showing circa 11.7 volts

BTW the rear wiper/relay unit, is completely removed, so that can't be causing any short.
When I remove one of the 3 connectors attached to the ECU, turning the key it works normally, but won't start. Soon as I connect it back on to the ECU all the lights go crazy. Second turn of the key, just gives me a clicking noise from within the engine and the dash lights go dim. Clicking is possibly by the ECU, my arms are not long enough to turn the car over and have my head by the engine 🤣. I think there is a fuel relay in that area, so it might be that.
