here I am, thinking I'm gonna watch a video for small space inspo, and then I get hit with an incredibly insightful discussion of modern day race and economic class in an inhospitable housing market... GIVE THIS WOMAN A SHOW. 💗
Just to endorse your claim - Give her a show! She is awesome! Very deep and accessible insight on how racism affects housing issues. This issue is super important
She’s has had many people come to her tiny house. But no one has let her tell her story and perspective. Well done documenting and I appreciate the conversation!
Exactly! I follow another channel (which I love) but they visit homes on lands without EVER acknowledging that they are on sacred Native land. Especially the homes in WA and OR - just pop in a sentence or two about the Duwamish or the Umpqua as a sign of respect. And all the people who are so Eco friendly and want to live off the land never seem to say what/whose that land is!
Which proves her point. They advertising for this society is all descent folks allowed. Then a lower income black woman moves in, and folks started acting real isolationist. The very fact that the houses are tiny and the black person is one of few black folks there, should say, one that this black person is looking for new experiences outside of their racial identity. And two that it's too small to invite more black folks than folks are ready for around in the tiny community mix. Black folks that is trying to assimilate is not trying to be a rebel in the mix, seeing racist everywhere, the ones that do see racist everywhere, usually stick too their own racial group and spaces. Am saying that the black folks that is looking for new life experiences outside of their racial group and spaces, AREN'T TRYING TO SEE RACISM. They are the ones most likely to not see it at all or miss it completely because they're not looking for racism or racist in their mission to find new experiences outside of the black community. Those are the ones that'll come back home and tell us, white folks ain't so bad or scary as we have been told they are. There are still white communities that make it clear the their estate Realtors that no black folks allowed. Those that say, it's okay for us to live in their communities, should mean it just as much as the racially bias folks mean, what they say. Don't tell us, yes it's okay to buy a home in this community and when we get there, we have to deal with y9lks from the dominant society, *messing with our peace of mind.* Because you want us to move back out like that is afforded for black folks, to just move because you don't like us. I think the realtor's should make sure that folks know, that this space is open to black buyers to. Before they buy into a MIXED RACE COMMUNITY. It's not just that white community spaces are better funded, it also means to us that the past, is finally in the pass.
Sorry for the typos not in the mood to go back there emotionally to edit it. I'm gonna go get me some ice cream cause, I don't wanna think about this stuff. See, most of us really, don't wanna deal with racism or racial biases against us, that stuff is mentally and physically draining.

@@韓国J Always glad to help. I am an African American over sixty with family in the south, so I have some perspective. The problem is mostly in the history and a little bit in the definition. First lets handle the definition because that is easier. "Colored person" in an old time, polite euphemism for African Americans. "People of color" is a newer term. It's more descriptive and can be used as a blanket term for any ethnic group that is not classed as "white" or has more pigment in their skin. It's most often applied to African Americans, but can be used for groups from South and Central America, Asia, and of course Africa. It can be a unifying term, as tan people, brown people and black people can all experience the same kind of racism, discrimination, police abuse, etc. It's an umbrella term. Now for the history of the term "colored people", often shortened by Southern whites to just "the coloreds". It's hard to pin it down as absolutely racist. Some people using it mean no offence. Some older (much older, like in their 90's) African Americans may still use it and see nothing wrong with it. It is more a matter of it sending the wrong signals. It's a matter of it being a red flag to black people within hearing that you might be an acknowledged racist, or even worse, a person who is absolutely a racist but doesn't know it themselves (there are a lot of them out there). The fact that it was a euphemism, or a polite way to speak the unspeakable is the first problem. It was viewed as being shameful to acknowledge any connection to Africa, so the term "African American" was not used and the term "black" while muttered when you were angry, should not be said in polite company. It was as if what we were was a shameful thing that had to be talked around. It is also connected in many peoples minds with southern white folks sitting on their front porches, drinking iced tea and saying things like "Just a listen to those coloreds sing! They are such musical people, so happy and gay without a care in the world! Just like little children. It's a good thing they have us white folks to look after 'em, take care of em and curb their primitive tendencies! Did ya'll hear about that ruckus down in Alabama? Seems like some no good darkie got to telling them that they should vote! Well they took care of that right quick. Shot him and strung him up from the nearest tree they did. Voting! As if they'd know what to do with a vote!" You get the picture? That's the kind of talk it was often linked to. It was also used in many racist diatribes, news articles and "scientific" papers about the innate inferiority of darker peoples. So as a black person, if I hear someone use a term like "colored" in a conversation, my mind says "possible racist, be careful". I may not condemn them out of hand, but I go on high alert just in case. It's one of those cultural land mines that it's best to walk around. Some Asian people in the West have the same reaction to the term "Oriental" for the same cultural reasons. It was used in those same kinds of racist context and leaves a bad taste in their mouths, at least for some of them. Hope this helps clear things up, at least a little bit. Take care.
I've been watching the tiny house movement for a few years now and I have noticed the major lack of African Americans within the movement. I really appreciate that you have been so open with your home and with your experience and that you are willing to share so we can all grow. Your house exudes soul and culture and creativity and looks like a place that would make one's spirit feel at home. Love, love, love your home ❤
Statistically speaking it's normal you don't see them - only an absolutely tiny fraction of whites consider tiny houses and even fewer go through with actually living in one. It's a numbers thing and probably cultural. I'm eastern european and my people laugh at shows like these, they all aspire to leave their tiny homes and live in mansions.

Love that she didn't do the regular tiny house tour. She discussed more intricate topics that are usually glossed over. The fact that people are choosing this lifestyle; whereas, there is a class of people who don't have a choice and must live in small spaces. The reality that the face of this movement is very one note. While there are Black and brown people who are also invested in this movement. She also spoke about experiencing racism as a Black woman who chose to live in a tiny home. Those areas that allow tiny homes to be built and maintained aren't always safe for Black people. I'm glad she was given a platform to discuss these issues. Beautiful.
Agreed that was very insightful. I'm months away from early retirement and I'm seriously considering a tiny house, the things she talked about I haven't read or heard anywhere else.
This conversation with her is so insightful. The deepest conversation about the tiny house movement I have ever seen. This woman is so honest and her voice is needed.
It's true what she says about the tiny house movement being 99% white people dominant, but the range of reasons why they choose tiny houses is far more wide ranging than she described. The number of preppy types are definitely in the minority and tend to be more family units than couples - especially in the skoolie conversions group. I suspect this is more of a trend in the US than in the other dominant countries i.e. Australia, New Zealand and Canada. The rest are mainly in three other groups - younger people who can't afford property or rental prices, people who want to live a more environmentally friendly lifestyle, and people who choose to spend their money on experiences instead of things. There's two other under represented groups - older people and people with disabilities. But when it comes the poorer in our society and the homeless (including the hidden homeless), there is plenty of initiatives around the world aiming to help these groups find decent homes. The problem is none of these initiatives become long-term policies and the laws around planning/zoning are huge barriers to enabling this to happen. I've followed the tiny house movement for years now and the majority of tiny homes are on land owned by family, friends and acquaintances. Tiny home communities are still very much in their infancy and are still considered less than desirable by a large part of society, almost as if they are communes or hippy gathering spaces. People need to stop thinking big is beautiful and bigger is better. The perception that the size of your home is a measure of your success needs to change.
@@wilmaknickersfit This was a very good analysis. I definitely see your points as a good segway for undergrad or grad school thesis with further research. Thank you!
This was such an interesting watch because her priorities (such as walk-in closet and larger bathroom by sacrificing kitchen space) and her personal style made it stand out from most of the tiny houses I've seen before. And this was one of the most luxurious tiny houses I remember seeing.
I absolutely love Jewel’s tiny home and her overall spirit. I saw her episode on HGTV and have been in love with her home ever since!! I am working on my tiny home dream for my retirement. Thanks for the inspiration Jewel
Ms. Gypsy Soul, what a beautiful interview and home; your words and message profound. I am a 56 year old Hispanic woman;.you"ve given me lots to think about Thank you. Love your home. Pray for your safety and well being. Thank you for sharing. Blessings.
This is possibly the most insightful video of the tiny house movement. There are so many practical applications for the tiny house -- I hope it is applied for the greater good.
I've seen your home showcased on numerous occasions on various channels... But on today much TEA was served, my cup runneth ova. Ms. Gypsy Soul we the people need more of your truth!!!
YES! Thank you for speaking so candidly about race, class, and tiny houses/ van life. I'm a young PoC looking for more affordable solo housing options, after experiencing horrific roommate situations. And been mulling this over, thinking about safety and privilege.
"A dream can take a while to manifest. At any point you change your mind, you get to dream again" Yes!!! A quote to live by. LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT HER AND THIS HOME!
She is absolutely amazing and her tiny palace is absolutely stunning 💕🙏🏼🏡🙏🏼💕 also she deserves a show / platform for her incredible honest insightful views!!!
I LOVE not only her eclectic, amazing style both personally and decor wise, but the fact that she said "this is generally a hipster, white movement and I am neither". It was such a true statement and I wish more people of every demographic would consider this movement b/c trailers have no racial bias - freedom can be yours if you think outside the box! :) One of the best tiny homes I've ever seen!
Awesome Tiny House segment. Jewel is amazing. As a 51yr old Gay Cuban American, her story spoke to me. By the end of her segment, I was crying. Thank you for not only sharing your home but sharing your journey, your thoughts and your spirit. Jewel you are an inspiration to us all!!!
Wow this woman is so articulate and brought up really different viewpoints. I have been into the tiny home movement for 6 years now and I have never heard anyone articulate it like the way she did. Incredible woman and so wise.
She's featured in other tiny house videos. Her tiny house is the first one to look like an actual home and not some sterile, cookie-cutter box that everyone else is building.
Her home is gorgeous. Decorated with such attention to details, it sure tells a story about the owner. The amount of different relax zones around the house - one (or more :) inside, two patios and the backyard - I can't put it properly into words but I think it helps to make a change of pace, the home is ready for various moods of the owner, it seems more friendly. I'd gladly more of the house. It's such an inspiration...
I'm a 32yo black man living in Toronto, Canada and I've been interested in tiny home living, downsizing, minimalism for a really long time. I'm about to make my first offer to buy land and i've been obsessively watching tiny home videos (and other related videos) for well over two years and this one stops me in my tracks. Fantastic job to by Apartment Therapy for creating something with more depth, insight and meaning than "This is my tiny house, let me show you around". Incredible video and this woman is absolutely crushing it. This vid makes me happy.
This is one of the best examples of designing a tiny house to utilize space and not give up features that are important to you. This house is definitely worth every penny she spent.
I think it was a fake e-fireplace, I watched the flames. Better safe than sorry, I guess. I wish I had the possibility of living in a tiny house. In our country, it's not common (plus I couldn't afford it, either).
Wow! Your home is stylish, artistic, intelligent, beautiful, exciting, welcoming, and original... An authentic reflection of a woman who knows, respects, and loves herself and life. I wish you an abundance of peace and joy.
You are the coolest person with a tiny house. Thank you for starting “the conversation” and bringing up the gap with the tiny house movement both politically and financially. You represent your community well. You are beautiful.
I never knew about the racism. I have always wanted a tiny house but I want to be in a community that is accepting. Thank you for your honesty. LOVE THE HOUSE!!!
@@caroljackson4093 I wasn't. It is very cool and elegant at the same time. They still didn't show the screened in porch, so there must not be much to show there, but that's OK. I wasn't disappointed. My design palate was sated.

Ms Gypsy Soul, I love your tiny home and your story. Sounds like you have met all your challenges and achieved your beautiful dream. Thanks so much for sharing your home sweet home❤️🌷😉
I love the truth this Queen talks about. I love her and appreciate her story. So much to think about. Thank you Apartment Therapy. More content like this please.
FINALLY! Its so great to hear a greater discussion behind the lies and gap of homeownership in the US. This perspective of Tiny living is often represented and shown through the lens of young, white, green and cool people. its clearly much more than that!
I love everything about her and her home!!! I have seen her home on TV before. I am a black single female who always dreamed of owning a shipping container home, I admire you! Well done!
Haters hate because they lack your talent to create and have not found the talent of their own. Ms Gypsy Soul, I love the life energy you breathed into your space. It’s jazzy, classy, and overflows with the essence of you...AWE-MAZING SPACE and SPIRIT!!! *snaps* *snaps* *snaps*
Wow, I didn't expect this well thought out commentary on the issues surrounding tiny home ownership. I'm glad that this wonderful Sista was able to expound and shed light on these not spoken of issues.
I saw her episode on HGTV and fell in love with her home. I always thought that I as a woman of color that I was not the typical mold of a tiny home owner. Thank you Ms. Gypsy Soul for being a trendsetter and ground breaker for women of color who desire the tiny home, minimalist lifestyle.
My girl. I have watched her story over and over again. She is my role model. I want a tiny home About 300 to 400 feet and to be part of a tiny home community of like minded individuals.
Beautifully well spoken, thank you for sharing your experiences and your thoughts on wealth, life and the tiny home community. I personally dislike how some of life’s success is on how big your home can be. Home is a feeling, and size should not matter ❤
I first encountered Jewel and her tinyhouse about 3 years ago and to this day it is the best tinyhouse that I have ever seen. I appreciate the discussion regarding racism and how that plays a part in tinyhouse living. Thank you.
What a beautiful space she has created! Lots of light, those big round windows and the colors are all amazing. As a person who relishes diversity I especially liked her story as opposed to just a clip about the house itself.
Thank you so much for this offering. So many of the concerns and hopes that I have around tiny houses were approached from a prospective I can appreciate. PS: Your taste it amaaaazing. I love how it was all put together. I see how the design of your HOME really expresses who you are as a person. Again, thank you for having the courage to be who you are. Very inspiring... on various levels.
I have seen a plethera of tiny home videos and this one has got to be the BEST I have seen. She speaks things I have heard no one else say and is quite articulate. She speaks of a more well rounded equitable community.....speak that truth while displaying that gorgeous tiny home. She represents well ❤
Wow, I've watched probably hundreds of Tiny Homes Videos and this is the first one that has actually moved me, inspired, and made me truly think. Thank you for sharing
Awesome home. You did an exceptional job styling it your way. I sorry you had a hard time finding a lot to put your home on. You’d fit right in in my neighborhood!
I fell in love with your house in the first video you had made. You have put on an addition that is absolutely stunning. I love your style and want to thank you for sharing your ideals and concepts. I have been romancing the Tiny House and the movement for quite some time now and I know my dream will come true soon. You found a foundation of your own which is essential in this movement which I have seen grow but still has struggles in that sense. I wish you all the best and keep shinning on that path so the Tiny House movement can persevere for everyone and I hope to be part of as well. Sending you angel blessing.
Woman, you are amazing on so many different levels. Thank you for sharing your story! I haven't previously heard this prospective from a tiny house owner.
Who loves Jewel and her tiny home? This gal!!! I have been following her on social media for years. I love what she stands for, the life she choose and her hairstyle. Her tiny home is beautiful!!!
This is the most stunning tiny house I have ever seen. Your daughter is so lucky to have a mother like you. I am white but this has been so insightful. I am so impressed with what you have accomplished and your house is gorgeous.
I agree 110 percent! I love, love, LOVE this house. Tbh I am retired, almost 50,and can only dream of a beautiful home like this. Intersectionality EVERYWHERE.😍
First time I’m seeing someone mention the lack of people of color in tiny house living. Thanks jewel for telling the truth no one has said. Love your little home!
Love how much personality and creativity went into your home. My biggest issue I am working on is cutting my things down and working out if I can store my crafting supplies.
this was excellent. not only because of the gorgeous build, but also for her poignant and insightful comments about the sociopolitical aspects of this way of life. 10/10
As a Black woman who's really inspired by this movement for affordability and wealth-building opportunities, your perspective is priceless. Thank you for venturing into this world and opening this way for other Black folks who dream of having their own home. I know it must not have been easy, but I also see the love you have for your beautiful house. I hope to have that one day and, like you, keep this conversation about access and the racial wealth gap at the forefront.
I think you have one of my top 5 builds. It’s gorgeous. I just wish I could have seen more of it. My heart was breaking hearing your story. I’m so sorry you have malicious people to deal with. I wasn’t raised with that mentality and I just can’t understand why it exists. Usually ignorance is the major Societal problems. Generations passing down prejudices. At some point it just has to stop. I love your home and I think it’s as gorgeous as you. I can tell you are very kind person. Bless you and I hope you have many wonderful years living in your dream house. I can’t imagine why you’d ever leave. Hilary
This is still once of the best designed and most liveable tiny houses ever. And I have been looking at tiny houses for years and remember this was the first that made the idea possible for me when I saw it many years ago. And I thank Ms Gypsy Soul for the insightful discussion as its so welcome. Since I look at tiny houses RUclips autosuggests van lifer, tiny house and other alternative living arrangements. And I have noticed all the trends she describes and its an elephant in the room that very few people acknowledge.
One of the best way conveying philosophy behind choices whilst highlighting the cruel reality of the housing situation. People must get rid off the shackles of social pretext. Wealth is like beauty, always in the eye of a beholder.

This was such an interesting watch because her priorities (such as walk-in closet and larger bathroom by sacrificing kitchen space) and her personal style made it stand out from most of the tiny houses I've seen before. And this was one of the most luxurious tiny houses I remember seeing.
We feel the same way! Totally unique space. We love how thoughtful she was in really designing it for herself!
This was one of the first times I've seen a tiny house I would actually want to live in and I've seen all those shows on HGTV and DIY network.
Hhr😢
What a spectacular house!!! And what a remarkable woman. Thanks for sharing.
That part! ❤❤❤
Different people have different interests.
🖤🖤
Wow this woman is so articulate and brought up really different viewpoints. I have been into the tiny home movement for 6 years now and I have never heard anyone articulate it like the way she did. Incredible woman and so wise.
Finally, a video on tiny houses that deals with more than just how whimsical and fun (yay!) they are.
Beautiful of her to speak on this. ♥️ Very privileged and honored to have watched this interview. ♥️
Yes, queen! What a wonderful home, and discussion! Brava!
Yeah but how much to build?
haters gonna hate
There are some nice one out there. Container homes as well are very nice

Hands down the fanciest tiny house I've seen, even a fireplace! 👌👌👌❤️❤️❤️
Hands down one of my favorite builds and one of my favorite segments that looks at the tiny house movement.
This is the most beautiful tiny house I've ever seen. What a fantastic job she did designing this. Amazing.
Thank you for tackling this discussion from a political angle. This video was well rounded in its execution. Great job!
She killed that without the slightest effort
You are the coolest person with a tiny house. Thank you for starting “the conversation” and bringing up the gap with the tiny house movement both politically and financially. You represent your community well. You are beautiful.
thank you!
I appreciate the social aspect is being addressed. I am a 60 year old black woman and I just bought my tiny home. A lifelong dream.
I never knew about the racism. I have always wanted a tiny house but I want to be in a community that is accepting. Thank you for your honesty. LOVE THE HOUSE!!!
Ms Gypsy Soul YES she is great i love her story best tiny house ever! One of the first I ever saw on youtube still the best !
wish they would have shown more of the house. It was more "atmospheric" shots. That little enclosed outdoor area looked adorable. I wanted to see it.
her name is ms gypsy soul there are other youtube videos featuring her home
i've seen her tiny house on YT elsewhere, with in depth tour
@@MBest12 TY! I'll have to check that out.
Julie W you want be disappointed at all. She was selling the building plans of her tiny house. She has an impeccable sense of style.
@@caroljackson4093 I wasn't. It is very cool and elegant at the same time. They still didn't show the screened in porch, so there must not be much to show there, but that's OK. I wasn't disappointed. My design palate was sated.
hands down the sharpest tiny house ive ever seen. I'm grinning so hard, almost with tears because i just saw my reflection in her. what a joy to see. I'm invigorated. somebody in this world understands me and I'm not a freak. totally enlightening and insightful. brilliant. well done apartment therapy ♥♥♥
anye76 Blessings to you. No you're not a freak. You R creative and willing to think out of the box. Too bad folk will try to make you feel bad for that. For more encouragement check #BRAVEGIRLSROCK. Or bravewomensconf.com. Awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank you!
Your home is beautiful and I can’t believe you have a daughter that is 31! Thank you for sharing your story. So much more in depth than the typical small house story.
Not the first time I've cried watching a tiny house video, but the only time I've cried for a good reason. Thanks for posting this
Ms Gypsy Soul, I love your tiny home and your story. Sounds like you have met all your challenges and achieved your beautiful dream. Thanks so much for sharing your home sweet home❤️🌷😉
I've never given much thought to "community." You've opened my eyes and reminded me once again that I'm never too old to learn. Thank you!
I say that you are beautiful
@@ritaranee4787 thank you!
Thank you for offering a different view on the tiny house reality. I love the design of your home.
Wow, I didn't expect this well thought out commentary on the issues surrounding tiny home ownership. I'm glad that this wonderful Sista was able to expound and shed light on these not spoken of issues.
Wonderfully eclectic!! Beautiful space for a beautiful "girly, girl" smile on my face throughout the whole tour.....Meaningful Space:)
5:48 Man, sis is dropping gems all through this video. Spot on again!
As a WOC, I really appreciate her insight! Truly inspiring!
One of the BEST tiny houses I have ever seen! Very insightful social commentary as well. Kudos to her and to you for featuring her.
I saw when she was first building her home, I loved it then but I love it even more now. Her house is Beautiful yet, welcoming.
Magnificient on ALL levels.
What a wonderful woman! An inspiration to us all.🌸
Thank you so much for talking about race in the tiny house movement.its something so overlooked!!
What a lovely tiny house. She's a beautiful queen.
I first encountered Jewel and her tinyhouse about 3 years ago and to this day it is the best tinyhouse that I have ever seen. I appreciate the discussion regarding racism and how that plays a part in tinyhouse living. Thank you.
The best tiny house design I've ever seen.
What a beautiful space she has created! Lots of light, those big round windows and the colors are all amazing. As a person who relishes diversity I especially liked her story as opposed to just a clip about the house itself.
This was one of the first tiny gems I saw years ago. Jewel has improved her decor even more! Bravo 👏🏾✨
Not what I was expecting but this was a wonderful video with a beautiful intelligent woman.
Best video I stumbled upon. Everything she had to say was important and true!👏👏👏
I saw a video about this woman and her house YEARS ago. Looks like she has redecorated a bit. I remember her jumbo red round window.
What a gorgeous tiny home, l love every aspect of this houses. This woman has really good taste. Best to you always.
amazing, both the house and the person. more of this please.
Very inspiring... on various levels.
thank you!
I know right!?
Thank you for this episode!! Rooting for you Ms. Gypsy Soul!
Awesome home. You did an exceptional job styling it your way. I sorry you had a hard time finding a lot to put your home on. You’d fit right in in my neighborhood!
She is inspiring! She does deserve her own show. I agree.
I’m inspired and humbled. What a beautiful and powerful way to live!
She might be the most insightful interview I've seen on Apartment Therapy.
Beautiful and well designed, a nice piece of architectural art. I like the big round window and the woodwork's finish.
Now THAT was very interesting and helpful. Thank you!
Who loves Jewel and her tiny home? This gal!!! I have been following her on social media for years. I love what she stands for, the life she choose and her hairstyle. Her tiny home is beautiful!!!
Wow, absolutely gorgeous!! You took the Tiny House to a whole new level!
Love this! Your taste is exquisite. Profound insight on living your life.
I love those huge circle windows!
This is the most stunning tiny house I have ever seen. Your daughter is so lucky to have a mother like you. I am white but this has been so insightful. I am so impressed with what you have accomplished and your house is gorgeous.
What a surprise this video is. A very lovely surprise in fact.
This just warms my heart! I would love to break bread with this beautiful wise Queen. She is wonderful.
I love her home! It's one of my favorites and I loved watching the build on it! Beautiful ❣️
this was excellent. not only because of the gorgeous build, but also for her poignant and insightful comments about the sociopolitical aspects of this way of life.
Hilary
WOW!!! I just love it! 👍
Wow, thank you for sharing that perspective! And, love the design!
One of the best way conveying philosophy behind choices whilst highlighting the cruel reality of the housing situation. People must get rid off the shackles of social pretext. Wealth is like beauty, always in the eye of a beholder.
"Of course, they're are some cheaper, but I kinda have some high end tastes." LOL. Put that on a T-shirt.
