Bedrich Smetana Lullaby - Transcription of piano scene from The Two Popes

- In the Two Popes, Anthony Hopkins performs an excerpt on the piano which he claims to be a lullaby by his favourite Czech composer Bedrich Smetana. I loved the piece when I first heard it, and after I finished watching the film, went looking through Bedrich Smetana's piano works only to discover it was Hopkins' own composition. There's a few other videos online of Hopkins performing a similar piece, which he seems to improvise slightly differently each time. Here is the rendition from the film that I transcribed!

I wish this song was an hour longer
This little melody of his has floated around for quite awhile in different variations, Hopkins should turn it into a full piano suite or something.
čas je o Vašem srdci... jak dlouho nechá Vaší laskavou duši vnímat... krásu
@@Ivory_Catit’s stolen by Hopkins, it’s from Alexandre Scriabin, sadly he’s gone a bit senile, he describes it in a preformance at Aquinas as being German, but in the movie he says it’s Czech (Smetana is from Czechia) but the actual piece is Russian (Alexandre Scriabin is Russian)

_Mozart, Beethoven and Chopin never died. They simply became music. -Anthony Hopkins_
I have no words to express how this scene touched my soul, the song and his face, that face like a fool, a kid falling in love for the very first time, feeling that love like she was still there a star that is already dead but you can still see her light
Yes! Exactly like that thank you for describing it.
I found this when I was searching:
Pryce: Yeah. In that sequence he was supposed to play a bit of Mozart, and he’d gotten in touch with Fernando, the director and said, I don’t think Mozart’s right for this sequence. But there’s a piece of Smetana that I’d like to play. It’s very dark and Smetana had a very troubled life and I think it’s right for the moment. So we filmed this with him playing the Smetana and then the booker went away to get the clearance for this piece of music and discovered that this piece of music didn’t exist. And it was in fact written by Tony, and purely to get the royalties.
LouraQ8 so true. Me coming from Czechia, Smetana had truly troubled life he was wonderful artist tho
Whenever I feel alone I find myself here. Piano keys can cure loneliness.
I’m glad you can find peace in this music! :)
Music is my ray of light in this dark world
One of my favorite composers
Having seen the film just yesterday on Netflix, I stood 3 or 4 times hearing this heartfelt piece. It wasn't reminding me Smetana, but a bit more of Rachmaninoff's & Scriabin's perfume. Today, I searched for this piece a few minutes ago & as I came by your video with the comments, I was deeply, emotionally overwhelmed by 2 facts; Firstly that A. Hopkins is it's composer & secondly that F sharp Major is my favorite key to improvise, too!
I was looking for the name of the piece. Unfortunately, I didn't find it. There are just a few videos of Anthony Hopkins playing it. Probably, it was written by him. However, it's one of the most beautiful compositions I've ever heard. Thank you for your contribution!
I love Anthony Hopkins..I would love to spend a day with him... extraordinary man
It is beautiful indeed and most surely composed by him but it must be said that he might have derived it from Alexander Scriabin’s Impromptu Op 14, No.2. Listen and be the judge.
@@billmarrufo Wow , there are two sections in there that sound identical to me. Id love to see an actual sheet music comparison. The first 20 seconds and around 1:30 in
PLEASE!!! DO A VIDEO WITH PARTITURE, or do one PLEASE, I LOVED THIS SONG, and you was played sooo well
I spent a while looking for it too. I didn't think it was Smetana , but I don't know enough about him to be certain. thank you for this
its not. Anthony Hopkins created this and used the name so they would allow it in the film. So the sources say.
I went looking the exact same way you did! Thank you so much, and also: fantastic video and audio quality. Great, great job.
Thanks so much!
This is beautiful, thank you for sharing!
Thank youuuuu, i was searching for this piece from the movie.
I just noticed that Anthony Hopkins plays a short extract of this music on the piano in the 2010 film Wolfman. precisely at 00: 12min. what wonderful music
It is said that he (Anthony Hopkins) created this, and used the name to get it in the film.
Beautiful 🎼🎼🎼🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎹🎶🎵🎶🎵🎶
This is amazing! Thank you internet, for showed me this guy. I'm very interested about your music. You have a new follower man!
Thanks so much Furkan! Lots more in the works :)
Amigo, no sabes lo mucho que aprecio que este está pieza musical tal cual lo has subido. Quede prendado de esta canción cuando la escuché en la película, gracias totales
Fantastic work TIC, I did the same trawl and made the same discovery after watching the film, but I did NOT put in the hard work of transcribing and scoring. I've just purchased my copy and look forward to giving it a whirl later. Marvellous. Thank you.
That’s awesome John, thanks so much! Enjoy playing the piece!
Thank you for uploading this!
Thaaanks alot , i just finished the film and start to look for the song and found you (: and it's 1:30am here so I've just purchased my copy and look forward to play it tmw morning ...
Thanks again , so much peace
Thanks for the support! :) 1:30am is my favourite time to be transcribing music. Cheers, enjoy the practicing!
Magnific!
I was looking for this
This is such a pleasure to listen to, thank you for doing this for my soUuuuLllll 😍 I'll have to figure out how to play it for myself some time.
Absolutely beautiful piece!!
Many thanks for this. This song is beautiful and I'm not afraid to admit I tear up on hearing it. I know in the film he cut it off abruptly but it would be wonderful if the ending could be resolved perhaps by a transition back to the first "A" part of the song.
I was very tempted to extend it, but I figured that would be stepping Hopkins’ toes and that I’d better leave him himself to finish it.
Thanks for playing this piece with the nuance it deserves. Other performers I heard on RUclips leave much to be desired...
Ping M. Y. Thanks so much :)
Thx for this, its my next project on the piano 💙
Thank you so much for doing this💕i wanted to learn this peace from the moment I first heard it and you really helped me♡
I’m so glad! I had the same reaction, I finished the film already late at night and then stayed up until about 2am to transcribe the piece!
爱了!终于找到有人扒出来的谱子 bravo! Thank you
great!
Please performs next song from the 'Two Popes', Berlin cabaret. I love this song and I didn't found somewhere. Congrats, man
Haha dude! I'm literally just editing it this moment, it'll be up by tomorrow!
Please performs next song from the 'Two Popes', Berlin cabaret. I love this song and I didn't found somewhere. He talk about Zarah Leander but it isn't.
Yes I love this one! I was actually of thinking of doing it next too :)
@@Ivory_Cat thaaaanks
This is a beautiful melody..so much heart and passion yet sorrow and sadness. It touches my soul...makes me think of my ex girlfriend, reminds me of her beautiful warming smile.
Beautiful.
Thanks so much for transcribing it. I bought it on music notes from you! Just(and you’ve probably already been alerted to it) in bar 16 you have E’s there instead of the C sharps that you’re playing in this version. I was going to look down the comments to see if anyone else had mentioned it but it was taking too long!! 😂
Hmm interesting, in the original file I sent to musicnotes I had C sharps in bar 16, and I don't actually have access to a download link for the published file. I wonder if one of their editors somehow made an error. Feel free to PM me on instagram with a picture of that measure, I'm curious!
Merci...
Thanks a lot
this is absolute gold
Como puedo encontrar la canción en Spotify ?
It is so beautiful...
İ crushed on
Hey, this was apparently composed by Sir Hopkins himself!! I can't find the sheet music? Do you know how I can get it? A link maybe? I love your version!
Thank you! Yes actually, sheet music will be available very soon!
It's now available! www.musicnotes.com/l/3Cd4w
Simple y hermoso!
Huge bravo! I am in love with this. I recently started playing the piano at age of 27, but reading notes the other way through Synthesia. It would be wonderful if you could produce sheets in that manner as well. Thank you for this wonderful eargasm.
I’ve considered the idea of doing some with Synthesia, but my advice would also be to really keep at learning how to read sheet music. It’s a long road, but super rewarding!
wow thank you
Can you transcribe the piano music of the starting scene from the "In the shadow of the moon"?
Hello, do you have the partiture of that amazing piece? Please, i would like learning it to
Enrrique Barraza not currently, but I may make sheets available in the future for all uploads! Currently looking into legal platforms for this
The Ivory Cat if you dont mind, can i get this piece by e-mail?
@@Jinnymusic me too please! Something to keep me sane during this pandemic!
Awesome!
how i love it 🥰
how can i get the score?
Deliciosa melodia.😍
Is there any way to get/pay for the sheet music for this transcription sounds great and would love to play it
It is now available! :) www.musicnotes.com/l/3Cd4w
The Ivory Cat thank you
Nicely performed *audience claps...
I have quick question regarding the piece, is this the same or similar piece he plays in the movie The Wolfman?
It is very similar! They’re both improvised I think, but the harmony and rhythmic style is the same
@@Ivory_Cat I figured. Thank you btw
Well done
Beautiful :'(
bravo!
Thank u! Sorry, but it exists just right here in your talented hands or I could receive this beautiful lullaby as a musical score?)
Микола Терельов not currently, but I may make sheets available in the future for all uploads! Currently looking into legal platforms for this

Your piano and audio recording are awesome! Would be nice to hear "Arietta" by Edvard Grieg played by you
Great suggestion, it’s a beautiful piece!
I was searching for this piece and came across your video. I am a newbie and started learning piano to learn this piece. You play it wonderfully. I even purchased your music sheet. But your girl can‘t read notes. Will you be doing a synthesis tutorial maybe?
Aw thanks good luck!! I’ve thought about dabbling with synthesia, but haven’t yet. Maybe!
The Ivory Cat you‘d already have a fan club member. I just have troubles to see which keys you play and 0,25 speed is apparently not slow enough 🤣
Is the transcription score available? Thank you!!
Yup! You can find it here: www.musicnotes.com/l/3Cd4w
Love it!!! Can you upload this sheet?! I can't find it online.
I’m almost finished setting up the platform where I’ll release scores for each video, it will be available soon ;)
@@Ivory_Cat would be so awesome if you would also do a synthesia style tutorial for beginners like me :) would be very awesome!
Thxs i love that pice much perhaps you could finish it
I was tempted to add more since the scene was quite short, but I figured I’d leave that up to Hopkins :)
I would Like to have the partiture. When and how can I get it please?
Happy to say it's finally available! :) www.musicnotes.com/l/3Cd4w
I wonder if the Film composer Bryce Dessner had a part in it?
That's a good question! I found a few other videos of Hopkins improvising on piano (not related to this film), and he actually plays something very similar to this melody. So I think it's pretty much all Hopkins
Hello, what’s the name of this music piece?! Im sure it has a name other than lullaby.
It’s Hopkins’ own untitled piece, that he claims in the film to be a lullaby by Smetana. So currently no other name!
This is so beautiful! Anyone have any recommendations for composers who have written music with similar harmonies to this?
Actually yes! Check out Chopin's Nocturne Op. 27 No. 1. Lots of the left hand figures are almost exactly the same broken accompaniment style, and there are quite a few harmonic similarities
@@Ivory_Cat Thanks, will check it out! Was getting some Piazzolla vibes when I watched the movie the first time, might just have been the cutting between scenes in Argentina
Erlend Flatin you’re right there’s definitely some Piazzolla influence in there too, probably why his choice of music worked so well for that sequence
Chopin is a good starting point but if you really want to listen the parent composition from which I think Hopkins got his inspiration, listen to Alexander Scriabin Impromptu 14, 2. You will be amazed, goosebumps!
@@billmarrufo yeah I can hear what you mean, very similar harmonies and rhythms, even in the same key, thanks!
Hello
I tried to pay for the sheet music - then didn’t work.
Hi, sorry I only am in charge of uploading the sheet music edition to their website, and musicnotes handles everything else. Try visiting their support page help.musicnotes.com/hc/en-us for help with orders and downloads
The Ivory Cat hi there! I changed the way of payment , and it worked. Thank you very much. Somehow PayPal didn’t work.
Does anyone have sheet music?
It’s available at www.musicnotes.com/l/3Cd4w
So nice to listen to this while the Corona Scandal is taking shape more and more. I first asked the minister of justice if it was allowed to listen to this and if it wasn't toooo dangerous. He didn't answer, so I took the risk to become a genuin danger to society . . .
"Berlin cabaret " please
Tutorial
太優美了,這就是全部了嗎?
I was very tempted to compose an extended version, but I figured that I should leave Hopkins to do that himself if he wants :)
This is perfect...and too short :(
Partitures pleasee :c
Speaking of holy things TUNE THE PIANO FOR THE SAKE OF ALL THINGS HOLY
Detuned
Ha, yeah the one bane of an acoustic piano
@@Ivory_Cat I like it this way.
Beautiful, but its better share with all people the art and not pay to get the sheet :(
NatsuzDH I would love to release a lot of the sheets for free, but I don’t have the rights to do so. The way they are sold actually pays the original composer (Hopkins) their deserved royalties
There's a piece with similar vibes from a deleted scene of Hannibal. It would be great if you could do the same transcription excercise for that piece. I'm sure you will like it in case you haven't heard it before.
Here is the link:

Tune your piano broh
I'm going to be "that guy." It's really cool that you are sharing this performance and that you transcribed the piece. But it strikes me as unethical-and certainly in violation of copyright law-for you to SELL someone else's work on musicnotes.com.
Precisely why I ONLY distribute through musicnotes.com, they actually do pay sales royalties to the original composer/publishers. I only get a very small percentage! :)
The title shouldn´t be in the false form. For B. Smetana, it was quite impossible to compose such a simple (= stupid) piece.
This one is actually harder to play than it seems 🫠
