I used a ccm rocker hook, bugger was really heavy and flexed amazingly in the early 70’s. it was probably the best for me at the time. I also used a straight stick like Dave Keon for stick handling and back hand shots, until I was 13 years of age.
I used the Red Titan before the white one came out. I think they discontinued it because it was hard to break. The 1st generation Red one was used and endorsed by Gretzky in 1980-81.
From a practical sense, I understand that decent new gear gives you a better chance at having more flex, the correct blade curve, etc. but how much of it really comes down to the shooting technique and good strength and conditioning? Same for decent skates vs. top of line skates (if they are both using LS2 blades, how much difference is there?)
@@Colbyw74 Some gear is just too much. Yes, Titans were made in Finland. I think there's a documentary here in youtube about it. If I remember correctly it was some Master of Science - engineer who thought he could make a good hockey stick using early sort of composite stick materials wood stregthened by fiber glass, his background was manufacturing sports equipment but mainly (cross country) skis. Sticks being good at the time were elevated by their colorful / red theme at a time when sticks were mainly unfinished wood without graphics. edit: 3:27 funnily enough I think CCM purchased Titan so they did look in to the "ultra glass" 😂😂
I loved this video. I just opened up the last two Montréal sticks with the M95 blade from back in my prep hockey days 22 years ago. Had to slap on the ol Vick mitts and shoot a few.. Still a great stick!
So sad my playing days were ended by an injury before the Carbon Fiber era. On the other hand, the prices would have bankrupted me. Got to handle a stick and lift a pair of new skates. Just one of my old Bauer 2000's weighs twice as much as a pair of new skates and a stick. You people are so lucky (and probably broke).
those aluminum sticks were sick but the best stick i ever used was a nike shaft with an easton carbon blade. this is like the last year before the old times ended and before synergy's took over.
My son used the same set up. Couldn’t pry the Bauer shaft out of his hands. He broke two blades in one game and had to get a blade from a teammate and it was an Easter blade already taped. Never looked back. He said he loved how rigid the Easton blade was. I can’t remember the flex of his shaft. (Nobody get dirty) He had a Mission and one other stick but he never liked either.
I am getting back into hockey joining a beer leauge after 15 years of not playing since Highschool Ice hockey. When I went to the pro shop I was in the future. Fucking Space age technology it was crazy.
I played goal, we didn't even get to have a curve in our stick so trying to score a goal by using your leg as a fulcrum and flipping the puck was the only option, I was lucky to get it through the neutral zone. Goalie sticks didn't have curved blades until the mid-80s, Patrick Roy (1986) is the first goalie I recall using a curved blade.
I started out playing defence at 6 years old, only scored 6 goals over 4 years so sniping was never a thing for me. I could hit the puck pretty hard, just couldn't aim to well like Foggy Nelson when he played for the Mighty Ducks.
Same, also had Sherwood and Christians. The "M9" was my blade of choice for most sticks. Started with a Northland with a straight blade, then moving on to Canadians, 6001 & 7001, before moving onto aluminum. A bunch of years back, went into the pro shop at local rink and asked the two "kids" that were working there, if they still sold replacement blades for the aluminums? The look on their faces was priceless, as in, what planet are you from? Oh, by the way, I was there to finally replace my precious 651 Vak Tacks.
@@davidschumaker8107 I played with hand me down gear for years , my dad had a pair of those armadillo thumb gloves but thankfully I never had to use those 😁
@@Govanmauler I'm almost 62, and my 1st gloves were just a bit newer than those gloves. I think there is an argument here for wearing something for the "essence." Since we live in a throw away culture the thought of repairing a worn out jersey or stick is not really at the forefront of players mind. But I like to keep vintage trinkets for the history, the story! Gretzky going from Titan to aluminum took many goals from his career number. Aluminum sticks were terrible for shooting , but I suspect he was getting a generous check to use it.
Leather Tacks with nylon toes, Cooper leather gloves and a wooden Koho stick, which was way lighter than the Northland I used prior. Ah, the early 1970s…
I have on my wall an EPOKSYD SUPER vintage hockey stick without a curve with literally no flex. I think this twig is around 80 years old? I dont know but its very old hockey stick.
I remember my first composite stick, was an Easton typhoon with a Easton force flex blade (sakic curve) grew up playing with old wood koho sticks. My first one piece composite was a tps response. I even tried that weird triangle shaped stick
I wanted a TPS Response so bad but my parents would never lol. Eventually got an aluminum two piece lmao. I wanted to get the synergy blade but you know, money again.
Aww wood sticks when we called it whip not flex. I liked the Christian brothers whip and remember going to their warehouse store in Warroad. The blades were flat because we made our own curves.
my favourite pattern was the titan Gretzky model until titan changed it to Ryan Smith which was Gretzky's original pattern , wooden sticks are far more durable and cheaper than todays stick , I was not going to buy hockey sticks made in Mexico .
honestly man, i have more heat on my slapshot with a wood stick. but for everything else newer sticks are better. well maybe a wood sticks better for slashing lol
Using a good 30$ wood stick, no stupid bouce on the blade with a pass. On the ice on faceoff, it stick down hard to lift, Use rigth curve and ou grind the ice like a knife. I hate stickhandling with flex one piece stick, it's basicly trying to control a "unsteady puck" bounce.
So, these guys have a bit of strength. What I've noticed is, noodle-armed kids have snipes because of the tech and trust me, I'm old enough to have played against wood/aluminum rocking shooters. Slappers may have been acceptable, but this corner picking snot rocket stuff just wasn't happening unless you had arms.
At the end of the day the equipment is only good enough in the right hands. Yeah the game has got faster and the kit lighter, like soccer if you put an old football (soccer ball) at the feet of a professional soccer player they may well break their ankles trying to kick it. So not everything old is bad, sometimes they were much better than the new.
all due respect the the greats of history but if you put modern goalies in their nhl they probably get 1/2 as many points. not to mention the fact that the skill difference between the top and bottom players that used to be massive isn't really that big anymore. they were great players for sure but they are also a product of their time.

a huge difference in sticks and gloves and ESPECIALLY protective gear is night and day for practicality and safety which is the most important part

Wow my first stick when I was a kid was an aluminum Easton! Totally forgot about that stick!
I had one too!
Best stick was either the jagr black magic or Gretzky shinny Easton. Plus wood stick heat up for own curves
fun vid, the old leather gloves molded to your hands especially when sweaty. those old Titan sticks were pretty stiff as I recall.
We would put wicked curves on our plastic bladed street hockey sticks by shoving the blades into sewer grates to bend them. Real vintage.
I used the kind that you can change the blade. Often made sure that I had an illegal curve.
TPS Response was my favourite roller hockey stick!
Gretzky going from Titan to aluminum took many goals from his career number. Aluminum sticks were terrible for shooting , but I suspect he was getting a generous check to use it.
350 for a stick? C'moon. BAUER X60 was like 150 and top of the line 10 years ago.
Hey nice video, but I wanted to ask if it is bad to practice with a Hockey Ball to stick handle
Honestly if Wayne Gretzky and the others had modern day gear they would be like a cheat code.
I think the opposite. I think that modern day players would walk all over those guys

Funny as video. Love the old school gloves and I bet they smell fresh as 🤣😂🤣
the battlemode sticks are super cool

Those wooden sticks were notorious for getting stuck in between the boars while skating. Got the wind knocked out of me a few times.
