Dave has been riding around on the Tuono but there's still a few finishing touches he wants to sort so in this episode he's pulling the suspension apart. It's shocking stuff!
Very interesting and informative, I spent many hours in Revs Suspension. As there local. Your expansion and showing the stacks working, is so easy to follow plus the little bits. The regas and oil would of just topped off what available in one video. Nice work👍
Regarding the non OEM caged rollers digging into the pins,I've also had this happen but on investigating it turns out some of the aftermarket pins sometimes sold with those bearings are just soft steel and nowhere near up to the job. Much safer to replace with more standard HK1812V 18x24x12mm Full Complement Needle Roller Bearings from your friendly local bearing supplier, and a genuine Aprilia pin which is hardened, tempered and ground to withstand the loads.
Honestly that's the best explanation I've seen, on how this type of damper works. Is this an Öhlins STX type damper? I have one very similar in my Street Triple, that I've found to be very harsh on the stock settings. I've played around with the compression adjuster on the canister, and found it does fuck-all difference. Now I know why, which is brilliant. Cheers!
I am from HK, I really love your video, because i own a BMW HP4 and aprilia RSV1000, i am a DIY guy, your video 100% match what i want to know!!! Thank you so much bro!! looking forward your next video!!! will you able to share the step for replacing shock oil and gas filling?
Installed preload of the spring is measured with the shock fully extended. You are not extending it, so the topoutspring is giving you a false reading. Or does this type of ohlins shock have none?
Preparing to do the linkage job on my recently bought Tuono Gen !! - but how did you remove the exhaust to reach the front bolt? It looks to me that the front or rear manifold has to be loosened to be able to remove the "middle" part of the system. Front manifold = removing lots of stuff including radiator.
Great - thanks - will try. Great videos - viewing the "Great ugly" collection made me take the final decision to buy the Tuono, since working with it seemed to be quite straightforward
I'm not official Ohlins but their equipment is pretty straight forward and seal kits are widely available. I'm tooled up for Bitubo as well which is a lot more specific on tooling!
Is it true that the ride height adjuster if screwed out too much can damage the rebound damper adjuster? I have picked up one of these shocks and the rebound seems stuck. What do you think?
The ride height adjuster is completely separate so can't damage the rebound side. If the shock has lost gas pressure you tend to lose the 'clicks' on the rebound adjuster though
Excellent demo and explanation of a rear monoshock. This channel is really good!
Thank you very much!
You explanation of the rear shock was better than any Ohlins rep that I've seen. I understand totally now. Cheers...
What a brilliant sink/fork bench I'm stealing that one. 5 gallon drum under sink I presume.
Only about 2 gallons but close enough :)
@@obsession_engineering nice work sir.
Awesome video Dave, really interesting stuff, it’s rare to find a channel that really does know what they are talking about.
Thanks. I do try :)
Great series of videos thanks for sharing

Just discovered your channel and really enjoying it Dave, great explanation of the shocks operation...subscribed...
Thanks and welcome
so many parts for such a simple movement - i like it! thanks for the insight!
Great video stay safe looking forward to next one 🇬🇧👍🏻

Good to know, thanks
This was a great video. I especially liked how you explained how the shims operate.
Thanks!

I didn't show the gassing as it's awkward to position a camera for! And I like to keep the odd secret, lol

There's no top out spring in that shock, only an internal plastic top out washer
@@obsession_engineering wich springrate did you have?

Been a while now, but seem to remember just removing the springs that hold the collector (centre section) and there was enough wiggle to get it out

That was super-interesting - thanks. Assume you're an Ohlins service centre?

Seeing how you changed the bush and seals on the shock would've been really helpful here rather than "how a shim stack works" .... Or both of course!
To be honest the seals and bushes are both press fitted, next time I'll show you the details!
Those caged bearings caused issues for me digging into the pin. Had to go and buy some of the non caged (more surface area covered).
did i miss the filling of oil/gas ??
That bit is awkward to position a camera for so I'll admit I didn't record it. I'm sure it won't be the last one I do though
@@obsession_engineering Still a great vid Thanks
