I think this story has a lot of good things to learn from. I see a lot of comments saying that she should stop bashing on Hmong people/culture but I don't think that's what she's saying/doing. She's telling her story and her experiences and she's mentioned that many times throughout her story. Regardless of how many people she slept with, why does that matter? If y'all are using that as a strike against her, then you've already missed the point. She's right when she says that there are many many guys out there who wants to sleep with as many women as possible but when it comes to the one they marry, she should be his only one, that's some double standarding there. Is that not a problem? Also, why do we get hurt when patriarchy is being pointed out? That's something that we should all try to move forward in a better direction. There is no positive why to talk about the toxic masculinity and patriarchy of our community and the impacts that it has had and still have on our women and community. These are things that we need to work on to change in order to become a stronger and more just community. There are so many beautiful things about our culture and community, so don't let your fear of constructive criticism and change, cloud your vision of the work that our community still need to do to be better and stronger. ♥️
Agree. It is a discrimination against Hm women. Now situation has changed (as the lady in this story), generally every man can take a prostitute to be his wife, but no one will let his wife become a prostitute. That is before marriage a man doesn't care about how many men his bride has slept with, but BE CAREFUL, the husband will never tolerate his wife if she commits adultery with another man after marriage.
Every race has good and bad people. Judge a person by their actions, not their race. Choose wisely ladies.
I too did not marry a Hmong man and it has worked out very well for me. 27 years together and although we’ve had problems like every other married couple, we are still in love, happy and working together as a team.
1992-1997 was a very difficult time as a hmoob teenagers. Being borned in the 90’s and already dating in the 90’s are too much for your parents. You are lucky to have met a honest loving man. Not everyone as lucky as you. Like your husband said “once you get the education, it can never leave you”. Bottom line is we as individuals need to be self sufficient.

We all deserve someone to truly love us and to be in a happy relationship. OG as our Hmong parents grew up in a different time and I really wish some things never existed like forced marriage, forced to stay in a toxic marriage, men can marry multiple wives and love/support their son's more cause they say girls will leave the family and only help the husbands family (not true) etc....I'm glade to see that our generation have changed a little! Good for her that she found real love and found God who and was able to open her eyes and change her way of living.
Love this story. My daughter is dating a meka right now and he should a sweet guy. He respect me and my husband well. We both agree for our daughter to date meka bc I told my daughter we hmong women work too hard for our in laws side of the family.

This is probably the best story I’ve ever heard on these Hmong story channels. This lady is the epitome of a secure, educated, independent and mature woman. I wish more women, especially Hmong women, would learn to stand up for themselves and know they are valuable, command respect from others. A relationship and especially marriage requires a give and take from both sides. Not an absolute leader and a follower. I am so glad this woman is trying to right the wrongs in her family, even if it means standing up to her stubborn father and his old ways.

Thank you for the story, there are a lot of things that I still don't agree with our Hmong Culture and their ways of thinking. But I am still thankful for some tradition. The sister who told her story was very lucky she found God and changed her life around. But as a parent, the worries about your child's safety while she jumped out the windows to go play with guys is crossing the line, in all culture. Also, she found a good husband and family, not all mekas are like how she thinks, there are the bad and good apples in all ethnicity.

I agreed with sister, Hmoob tradition of making the men so highly mighty. Women and men, we are all human beings and should be equal. We should help each other out especially in a marriage.
