    Hi John. Iv worked in many studios, in Jamaica and China. And when we have crackly records or messy sticky ones, many years taught us one thing. And this is the recipe ". Wash in a bowl of quite strong washing up liquid. In the UK we use fairy " 😅. With a Sponge, Luke warm water". And rinse after a lot and I mean a lot. And shake off. And if your going to record or digitise it, then play it while still wet. Yes wet. ". Less friction , Less noise. " Please don't use alcohol especially, isopropanol ". It burns off the high frequency side walls. ( Proved under electron microscope) at university research". Try it and play one. You will be surprised ".

      Hi Kaiwen! Thank you for your comment and passing on your knowledge! Very much appreciated. I no longer use any alcohol in cleaning my records. I never used very much in the mix anyway, but thank you for pointing out the hazards!! I have not tried playing the rougher records wet, but someone else mentioned the same thing and also said it helps. Thanks for your expertise and for watching!! Have a wonderful week! Cheers, Jon

    Hey there Jon. I give anyone a slew of credit who is putting work like this into saving records. I used to do the same. Lately I would not have the time to do so. I have been that busy. The one thing that I am impressed about with this pile of records is the labels and the artists. Looks like you stumbled upon some reggae gems for sure. I wonder why the previous owner let there records drift out to the ocean and back into the shore? {smile} I said that because you mentioned barnacles being on one of them. Prince Buster is a name that I know well just from watching Doug and 6inchpianist John . Thanks for giving us a taste of the Derrick Morgan. Truthfully it does not sound bad at all after the cleaning.
    Man you did find some real gems Jon. I salute you for giving them the extra care that they needed. To see them spinning again is tops. Great video. One of my favorites of the week in the VC~

      Thanks for watching Rob!! You are a VC lifer!!! I dropped some money on these, but I think the condition scared away a lot of people. I’m just happy to own the original artifacts even if they’re noisy and water damaged. You just don’t see records like this in the north east. At least I don’t. I’m no expert on reggae either, but I know Prince Buster, the Maytals and Heptones are good records. Hope you’re doing well and not working too much this summer. Rob thanks again for your support!! Have a pleasant Sunday!! Jon

      Thanks Dave!! Yeah it’s crazy to think of all those records getting melted down to make recycled vinyl. Sometimes they even melted them with the labels still on. Really nuts. At least most music is preserved on cd or digital format somewhere, unlike the silent film era, where those movies are gone forever. Dave, thanks for watching!! Alway enjoy your comments!! Jon

    I wonder if a blacklight will show off the ink on the labels. Your cleaning method is just fine - BUT, Jarkko years ago showed how he used a Jewelry ultrasonic cleaner (like $20) and modified something to actually make it clean 45s which might be something to think about

    • @bipbopboom
      @bipbopboom  3 года назад +1

      Kris, I use an ultrasonic cleaner I put together for my 45s and older vinyl. These were just too dirty to put in it first. It’s an absolute miracle worker for old records. The newer records 1970 and on, I can’t tell the difference between cleaning the normal way and the ultrasonic. I don’t know if it’s the older type of vinyl, the width of the grooves or the age of the dirt, but the ultrasonic works wonders on old records. Black light is actually a good idea for trying to read faded labels. I have everything figured out but three records. Some old calypso and ska probably not in discogs anyway. Thanks for watching!! You guys have a great weekend!!!

    Jon, I love Caribbean pressings; Jamaican, Bajan(Barbados), T&Tobago, etc, etc.... love old Reggae, Calypso, Soca titles on 7". Hard to find them in bunches like that here in L.A. even though we have more record stores than any place else in the world... the Caribbean based 7" releases are kinda scarce. Would have loved to go through things with you. Pretty killer. - TONE
    P.S. GooGone liquid would have taken the stuck paper off the grooves of the record pretty easy, and then just a quick deep clean would wash off the GooGone. It's 100% safe for the vinyl or styrene, you just want to get it all off the records surface and out of the grooves so it doesn't collect on your phono cart stylus.

    • @bipbopboom
      @bipbopboom  3 года назад +1

      Thanks again for watching Tone!! Yeah, this was one of the most fun lots of records I’ve ever bought! I wasn’t that knowledgeable in Jamaican music, but I fell in love with the music now. I’m trying to learn more and grab what I can afford.
      There were two records from the Barbados and one more disco sounding from the Cayman Islands in the batch. As you can guess, none are in great condition, but they are just cool artifacts to hold. I like the ripped labels and the handwriting on them. They were probably all played over and over at parties and events. I can see why you love this music!!
      Yeah, that Goo Gone is great advice! I use it for price stickers but never though about using it on vinyl. Thanks!!
      I enjoyed your comments!! Cheers, Jon

      Thanks for watching Shaun!! Yeah, this purchase was probably the most fun I had with records. I cleaned and labeled all the records. I had one that I only figured out a couple of weeks ago. It was an early pre ska record, almost country sounding. Just searching random songs on RUclips til I heard it. A lot of these records aren’t in discogs at least not the same versions, but that’s not uncommon for Jamaican records I’m learning. The conditions on some of the records are not good and others turned out to be nice rarities. I enjoy them all. I love the history of these well loved records. Appreciate you stopping by!! Cool stuff Jon, did you get these for cheap? Are they rare records? My father has some old Greek and Macedonian singles I want to clean up and digitize for him to burn on a cd. Hey George!! Thanks for stopping by! Much appreciated! I paid a bit of money for the box, but they were cheap considering how many I got. That’s great you have those Greek singles!! Definitely try to clean em and put them in sleeves! There might be some great stuff in there, not to mention the sentimental value. I search Greek 45s on eBay quite often, I’m looking for a couple in particular to no luck. If you have any with a more rock n roll or sixties pop style, they may be quite valuable. But most singles are the traditional Greek music. Still real cool and worth digitizing. I would check if the music is online already, you might save yourself some time. If you can read or type in Greek that is! Sounds like a fun project!! Have a great night!!! Jon
