    Interesting experiment! Like Stubbs, I also really appreciate how you pointed out that this is just what you're doing and this is not the *only* right way. Plants are an excellent filter. I may have told you this already, but I experimented with filterless (meaning I forgot to plug the filter back in after a wc for almost a week) in one of my heavily planted tanks. I kind of freaked out when I realized and thought I had killed my cycle, but to my surprise I had 10-15ppm nitrate, 0 nitrite, and 0 ammonia. Part of me thought I just got lucky so I plugged it back in because I'm scared of going filterless. But it really did get my wheels turning. Baby steps for me, lol. Maybe someday I'll be brave and try it for real like you! Your tiger lotus looks *amazing* ! Hope you have a good weekend and thank you for this interesting topic and the way you presented it 🙂👍👍

      I have actually found it interesting that even with my fish room tanks since I removed the filters I don’t have nitrate issues anymore. It’s actually the opposite of never having enough of what they say you should have for a planted tank.
      Thanks for watching and I love that tiger lotus as well, very vibrant, have an awesome weekend 😁👍

    I have some no filter, some sponge filter, and one with a hang-on-back. The one with the HOB is my pair of bristlenose plecos with their babies. That tank was GROSS without a filter. Just constant brown clouds of mulm to the point where the water was dark. This seems to happen to any tank I add a pleco to, even babies. The filter clears it right up, but of course, now need to clean the filter weekly. On the other hand, I just took a HOB filter off another 20 gallon I have. It actually made a mess, instead of cleaning up a mess. It was blowing debris into the plants, where it would be stuck, and then grow algae in the plants because of the debris. I added an established sponge filter before removing the HOB so there wouldn’t be a sudden removal of beneficial bacteria. It’s transitioned fine, and plants are coming back without algae all over them. How often do you do water changes on your no filter tanks? I tried no water changes for a long time, and while the fish were totally fine, the plants were just not growing much in several tanks, and water changes helped. So with water changes, it also depends on the tank for me. I think if I wasn’t breeding and selling plants, so constantly removing plants and fish, the tanks would maybe balance better. Hopefully some day I’ll have room for some display tanks that I would think would stay more stable without always removing things or adding things.

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  Год назад

      With removing the filter from this tank I currently don’t have any running with mechanical filtration any longer. Although all of them except this one and my goldfish tub are dirted tanks.
      As far as water changes, with all my tanks in my fish room I don’t necessarily have to do water changes because they always stay at 10ppm or below in nitrate but I try to do a 15%ish change every month or two. I don’t gravel vac or anything either just exchange water from the top. With this tank I haven’t decided yet. Currently it still sits at 10ppm nitrate since I filmed this and the plants are growing bonkers.
      Every tank , hobbyist and situation is different but though obviously. I find I have to do less maintenance with my dirted filterless tanks which is not supposed to be the case of you follow all the “RULES” 😂
      Thanks for watching 😁👍

    For most of my tanks, I use the old fashioned plastic corner filters. Mostly they are used to add air to the tanks. I have gravel on the bottom of the filters with the filter floss over that. So when I change the floss, the gravel on the bottom still has beneficial bacteria. Are they necessary? Probably not but like you said it moves the water around for the heater.

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  Год назад

      Yes that’s my biggest issue with no mechanical filtration is no water movement. That’s why I still use an air stone to push water around for the heater.

    New sub here. Major question for you, I need input before I take the leap and get back into keeping fish. I love fish, and plants and the idea of a natural tank has always had my interest. My question is this, are you using CO2? I've seen others use it for their plants but you don't seem to be. Your plants look amazing! Can you share your thoughts about this and thank you for your knowledge and input.

    • @pattys_aquatics
      @pattys_aquatics  Год назад +1

      First, thank you for subscribing it’s much appreciated 😁!
      Second, I do not use CO2 at all. In all honesty what I have found with my tanks over the last 2 years since I started doing dirted tanks is the key is deep substrate. And when I say deep substrate it doesn’t have to be be a dirted tank. In this tank it’s just blasting sand. The deep substrate keeps the nitrates down ( I have my beliefs on how but I’m not a scientist by any means and there are differing opinions online) and my plants grow like crazy. I don’t even use fertilizer anymore. As far as lighting I have a fluval 3.0 plant light on this tank but all my others have cheap shop lights and really see no difference plant growth wise. So I say go for it just do your research that’s always helped me . Thanks for watching 😁👍
