Wow, just happened upon this video and there are so many comments about how 'slutty' or irrelevant and contradictory the mv is to the concept of 'female president' and the empowerment that is associated with this concept. to be honest, any time that i see 'slutty' or related words used to denigrate women, i feel that there's some (internalized, for the ladies) misogyny going on there. female empowerment isn't necessarily women dressing in power suits or covering their skin (that's a mark of the patriarchy, tbh) - it's about women handling their bodies however they want to handle them. if they want to perform a fucking striptease because it makes them feel sexy, then more power to them (no pun intended). it says something about our societal mindset that whenever we see something like the introduction of this mv, we automatically view it as something to be hidden away, something shameful. what's the problem with female sexual empowerment? would anybody be complaining if it were some boy group doing the same thing? that being said, it's perfectly okay to feel that something is too sexually progressive for your personal tastes - but applying that to a generalization that something is 'slutty', 'sexist', or 'degrading' isn't a good idea. WHEW. heavy stuff out of the way- wow their vocals are amazing o_o
I think you've made a great point. Female empowerment shouldn't be equated with looking like a frowning man (you kind of opened my eyes to that, thank you). And girls who want to look hot shouldn't be bullied with the word 'slutty'. But I do want to point out that it is impossible to tell from this MV whether Girls' Day themselves enjoy stripteases (i.e. whether they're expressing their sexuality), or whether it's all for the excitement of the fan boys who buy their products (i.e. whether they're indirectly expressing male sexuality). Have you seen Ailee's 'I will show you'? I would say that MV does a much better job at portraying 'looking hot' as a choice you can make for your own well-being. In this video, it comes off to me more like something these girls have to do to be noticed.
I agree. Many of us come off as slut shamers and it's not good. And I am one of those people that complained about the video in that kind of way. I'm sorry for not coming off articulate. I don't mean to necessarily point at the people in the video as the problem with the video. The creators are the issue for me, and I do have strong doubts that Girls' Day had more power than the creators on this one seeing how the pop music business works in Korea. EMariavdB's point that it's hard to tell if Girls' Day was 100% for this video is compounded by the fact that one of the girls later came out about some of the more sexualized shots and said she did not agree to let them use those shots. It's a lot less clear here about who was truly in control of Girls' Day's bodies and their body image. I don't have an issue with Girls' Day doing a video like this alone with their own lyrics, choreography, and in their own comfort. I do have an issue when it's a big music company telling them what to do. It comes off more as shock and awe and a means to acquire views and music sales and less as showing women are in control of their own destinies in a very Confucian and patriarchal country.

Actually, these anti fans will always say something bad and they automatically generate about 10 more views per comments on average. The worse things they say will generate more comments. I don't think that weakens the song, tbh. They weren't praising Park Geun Hye in specif for achieving it, it's about the symbol of a woman reaching power. That empowered them a lot, and South Korea is a country that still expects certain roles and patterns for woman in romance and beauty. The song says "We have a female president, so it's the time for us to kiss first". The fact that a woman reached the power, and they still wait for a man to do the first step was contradictory, and they used it. I think this song is very powerful for it's meaning, and the fact that their female president messed it up doesn't change what it meant for woman back then

I feel like they could have done so much more with the lyrics. This song could have been a song about empowering women, and I guess it sorta does, but falls short of the greatness it could have been. Within Korean culture, this is a pretty important song though. Women coming on to men isn't as normal or socially acceptable as it is in the West. Sure, there are bigger problems and hurdles the song could have targeted, but I think for a Kpop song, the lyrics are pretty forward thinking and impressive.

I feel like they could have done so much more with the lyrics. This song could have been a song about empowering women, and I guess it sorta does, but falls short of the greatness it could have been. Idk, sorta disappointed it was a love song..especially since the title implies something so much more.
Within Korean culture, this is a pretty important song though. Women coming on to men isn't as normal or socially acceptable as it is in the West. Sure, there are bigger problems and hurdles the song could have targeted, but I think for a Kpop song, the lyrics are pretty forward thinking and impressive.
