Your last upload made me burst into tears. I was in Chinatown in California when I was 16 on a field trip and they were selling turtles for five dollars. I bought them not only because they were cute, but because they looked miserable in the tiny containers they were in, IN the heat. I took them home, got a tank, but I was given the wrong directions. My habitat was dry, and I had a heat lamp, and I was told by petco that they needed a dry environment. I basically killed my two turtles, red eared sliders. Thank you for this video, I regret being stupid and not knowing what their habitat should’ve been. I loved them both dearly, Emmy for Emerald and Forrest for Forest Green.
Kamina Virastranoae did the people in the petco shop tell you to have them in a dry habitat with a heat lamp? If so then Taylor has said in a video before that pet shops can give you the wrong info about an animals habitat temperature and stuff like that. If so than you are not stupid for having that kind of habitat for the turtle

Thanks for all your support guys. On august 1st, city council of San Antonio is presenting a law that will allow the confiscation of all animals (not just turtles) sold on the side of the road under any and all conditions. The law states that technically the owner of these animals can pay a fine to recollect them, but it will be $50 per turtle. After 5 days they will work with sanctuaries on rehoming the turtles. They asked me to come to the public city meetings for the next few weeks and talk about this to raise awareness 😇🐢❤ doesn't stop here though, that just makes it illegal in San Antonio- not everywhere!

I remember when I rescued a baby Sulcata tortoise from a bad owner. It was living in a box with spoiled food and feces all over. The "water bowl" was a bottle cap that was empty and the tortoise shell was written on with nail polish. The owner was going to throw him away because he was sick but I took him and bought all the supplies needed and healed him back to health. I didn't go to sleep the night I got him because I was researching so many Sulcata care videos. We named him Torta and my family loved him so much, but we gave him to my brothers friend (who was really good with pets especially tortoises) because no one was able to watch him once I went back the college dorms. We see him on snapchat from time to time. Enjoying his day at the park, eating, and bathing. Warms my heart knowing he went to a good home. Love my little Torta 💕

I'm so sick of reading shitty comments about Taylor when she did exactly what she should have done in that situation. before buying a turtle, here are some things to ask yourself: "do i really, truly want this turtle, or am i impulse buying?" "am i able to build a suitable outdoor setup for this turtle?" "am i ready to care for it for years, and years of my life?" "am i prepared for its size?" "will my turtle live a good life with what i provide it? will it be happy?" "do i know the exact care that this turtle needs like the back of my hand?" "am i financially stable enough to support this turtle for the rest of its life?"

Depending on where you live in Australia you don't need a license for all reptiles. Here in Melbourne you can get many types of blue tonged skinks, long neck turtles and a few types of geckos without a license.
Harley Quinn yes! I love it However I've seen so many people on pets for sale sites selling their reptiles and not wanting proof of a license :/ (I do think they'd ask the actual buyer of proof, but not on the ad so people without a license think they can buy them)
Gaming2Mas Turtles are not amphibians, like frogs and salamanders they're reptiles like lizards and snakes. Turtles do have an amphibious lifestyle by living both on land and in water but this does not make them and amphibian.

My husband and I recently got a red eared slider. I didn't purchase him or even adopt him but, sort of just ended up with him. The classroom where my father works had this turtle in a tank and hardly ever came out. When I went to work there, the turtle was hardly fed and on the weekends, didn't even eat. My father felt bad for it since the beginning and I volunteered to care for him over the summer. We felt so bad for him we decided we can't return it. Luckily the teacher said we could have him. We're going to soon build an outdoor setting for the little guy and hopefully he can live for a really long time with us. We already love him and he's grown so much with us. We couldn't take him back to a sad life. He's so adorable.

I had a female tortoise once. She was just sitting in the middle of the road and wasn’t moving at all. We got her and took her in. She was in an tank outside. I don’t remember what happened to her tho. She lived at my grandparents house. My uncle would also take care of her.
I'm VERY glad that you actually brought them to a sanctuary instead of just dropping them in a pond or lake (like a lot of people do) because if they are just dropped off in the wild that can be harmful to them, other species, and even people! Good job Taylor!
This is an example of why I love Taylor so much,, she cares so deeply about every being so much so that she spent $500 on turtles that she didn't have to save because she knew they wouldn't have good lives and she gave them the chance they never would have gotten. Riley Smith it's the same for me. This was a very good video educationally. I live in IL and I've never seen any kind of animal being sold on the side of the road. It was nice to be exposed to this kind of animal cruelty so that I know in the future if I see something like this anywhere
Kennedy Kreidell I live in Missouri and I've never seen people selling any animals on the side of the road either. Conservation efforts and animals well-being in general are typically taken very seriously. Though, turtles are often roadkill here, at least on the paved roads that are in more remote, wooded areas. The only thing I've experienced that is close to this, is people selling or just outright giving away kittens and puppies in places like Walmart parking lots, with little regard as to what kind of homes they may end up in. Though I don't think that's illegal, so much as just immoral.
IchiHiki I would agree with that. I love about 20 Minutes outside of STL but on the IL side and I have seen people breed and sell puppies online or over Facebook with no regards as to who they are going to end up with. It's not illegal just I don't think it's morally right

I once lived in an apartment complex and the man below me used to collect turtles and one day I saw one turned over with nail polish on his back and he couldn't move one of his legs so I took him to the vet and got him taken care of. I'm appalled that people can treat living things like this. I have also Donated $175 to help as it is near to my heart ❤️

I have a 15 year old red earred slider and i got her from a vender in the Wisconsin Dell's. Wasn't legal to sell them as they were tiny, so really what the did was sell you a plastic container and gave you the turtle for "free." The more I learn abt this the more I'm upset that a) I gave this person business and b) I don't know if she was wild or not, plus there was no information given at the time of purchase. I've been wanting to set up a pond system like that for her for over a year now, but was told by my parents that she only needs an aquarium and that she's fine where she is. I'm going to show them this video and hope it helps to change their minds and allow me to build her a proper living area. Thank you so much for this video, Taylor!!

I saved about 20 turtles off the side of the road like this in Dallas, TX. It was very sad, in the middle of summer sitting in a 5 gallon black bucket just baking in the sun.. I stopped bought as many as i could afford and took them home and left them go in the pond on my property! Now i get to see my big beauties everyday :D
I got my three three toed box turtle the day we were showing our house to sell. We found her in our yard. I am an experienced animal owner so the turtle is in good hands. Even though I knew how to take care of her, I still went to reptile specialist to make sure my info was correct. I tried to find the owners. She was obviously a pet you could tell because she's very social. The reptile specialist l said she was probably around 20 to 30 years old. She has now been in my backyard for a year having a great diet, and lots of love from the family.
These poor animals don't deserve the way people treat them!! It breaks my heart when idiots, or people who just don't know any better hurts these poor little creatures. Animal activists, and experts around the world? You are all blessed

im so glad there is places like these. i used to have a turtle, a painted turtle that i “rescued” from the pet store. he was nearly dead when i got him and we spent over 5000$ on saving his life! but then i fell really ill, i have chronic illnesses and now i’m immunocompromised, so i had to give up my turtle. we donated him to a local nature center that takes care of special needs turtles. they have AMAZING indoor and outdoor ponds for the turtles and he’s really well taken care of and happy. i miss him a lot though, so i go and visit him every few months. he remembers me!

So many people don't think about all the work that goes into these turtles.. We rescued a red eared slider from a class room. She was fully grown and they were keeping her in a 20 gallon tank with no heater or lamps of any sort. The water was so green you couldn't tell what was in it. She is now living much more comfortably in a 100 gal. tank with everything else she so desperately needed. ❤️

This has to be one of my favorite videos that you've made. I grew up finding box turtles under blackberry bushes and ive always been so disappointed in the pet trade when it comes to turtles and reptiles in general. Seeing this video and knowing that there's a safe place for them not far from me makes me feel a lot better.

My uncle bought me a turtle from the mall, it came in the same thing that the seller of the 80 turtles provided.Of course my baby turtle named Charlie wasn't going to live in that condition. We got him a big tank for him to grow to about 10 inches then we were planning to get a bigger one when he turned 20 inch or just when we thought he needed one, we got him a little land spot, fresh water each day with little drops inside to help his eyes because he was going blind, we gave him everything he needed to survive. He got sick one day and didn't want to eat, my dad came home one day and saw him dead. I was so sad, he was only 4 months. What did I do wrong? I gave him treatment ,fresh water with like vitamin crap in it for turtles,to help him and the water was medium temp., I gave him a place to rest on land, lights,etc. RIP Charlie, i miss him so much.
When I was about 6 or 7 my family bought two turtles from a flea market in Florida (red ear sliders). At the time they were so small you could set them on a quarter and see the edge of it around their shells. When they got to be the size of small plates we set them up a 50 gallon trough in the backyard and gave them a spot to get out of the water. When they got even bigger we figured out it was a male and female so we separated them into their own set ups. At night we would put them in really big tuper wear boxes with air holes drilled in and put them inside so they wouldn't get attacked by predators. About 4 months ago we decided that they shouldn't be living this way, so we took them to a friends ranch. She has a big pond with other wild turtles living there so we thought that our turtles would be fine and learn to hunt for themselves. Our friend says she sees them every once in a while so I hope they're doing ok. These videos have made me so glad that we did that and a little guilty that we didn't do our research before buying baby turtles from a flea market.
just finished watching now I'm changing my townhouse patio (which is very large) to a larger home for my greek tortoise. she is the sweetest tortoise she nuzzles into me. she just deserves a better life and I feel like she is going to love her new home
Not enough people are brave enough to step up and try and protect animals, its our job to protect natural habitats and to provide animals in captivity the most fulfilling life they can have. Keep it up.

Purplesnowball 13 it just reminded me of my puppy that I had to give away (but he would always follow me and sleep with me) but my other dog was getting jealous... which Idk why since she never sleeps with me, but once we gave him away she wasn't depressed anymore. I took both to a pet fair and got him a harness and my dog a tag and she was actually being social. It was kinda a good thing we had him for a bit.
Daiz4 Dayz I think the reason this was easier for Taylor is because it was the plan all along. She got the turtles knowing she would take them to a sanctuary. If she got a pet turtle and was going to keep it then had to give it up I'm sure she would be very sad.

Its disgusting people still cant see that even reptiles are still living creatures that still need basic life requirements. Whats even worse is some people dont give a fuck regardless the creature is healthy/happy as long as they gain something from it. I hate the myth they only grow as big as their environment. You don't expect kids to fit in a box when they are full grown. sure they are small people, but that's not the point!😡
Right. I hate it too. In a twisted way, they are correct. Any animal, turtle, tortoise, fish, snake, dog, cat, elephant, WHATEVER can be kept in a way too small of an enclosure and only grow to the size of it's enclosure and no further. But that's because the animal is going to die before it grows to it's full size and full potential. So yeah. Technically those vendors are right in saying the turtle will only grow to the size of it's container...but that's only because the turtle is going to die in a few months versus growing and living for 30+ years.
i have two box turtles and for a while we kept them in a tank 1-2 years because they are babies but once we moved we made an area in our back yard dedicated to them so they have a very natural set up and they eat healthy and they are growing
I adopted my turtle almost three years ago. She comes up to the side of her enclosure when I go up to her and tries to climb into my hand. I spent three months trying to find her the right food, substrate, basking area, and decorations. She loves it
It's so sad how people treat turtles(and any animals) turtles are one of my favorite animals, and it hurts to see them like this. Thank you Taylor for showing people what really is going on with them. They deserve better then how people treat them.

"do i really, truly want this turtle, or am i impulse buying?"
"am i able to build a suitable outdoor setup for this turtle?"
"am i ready to care for it for years, and years of my life?"
"am i prepared for its size?"
"will my turtle live a good life with what i provide it? will it be happy?"
"do i know the exact care that this turtle needs like the back of my hand?"
"am i financially stable enough to support this turtle for the rest of its life?"

I live in San Antonio. A few months ago my mom and I saw one of these people selling turtles. He said he had a permit (🙄) we reported him. The turtles were taken to a sanctuary.

Depending on where you live in Australia you don't need a license for all reptiles. Here in Melbourne you can get many types of blue tonged skinks, long neck turtles and a few types of geckos without a license.

My husband and I recently got a red eared slider. I didn't purchase him or even adopt him but, sort of just ended up with him. The classroom where my father works had this turtle in a tank and hardly ever came out. When I went to work there, the turtle was hardly fed and on the weekends, didn't even eat. My father felt bad for it since the beginning and I volunteered to care for him over the summer. We felt so bad for him we decided we can't return it. Luckily the teacher said we could have him. We're going to soon build an outdoor setting for the little guy and hopefully he can live for a really long time with us. We already love him and he's grown so much with us. We couldn't take him back to a sad life. He's so adorable.

I had a female tortoise once. She was just sitting in the middle of the road and wasn’t moving at all. We got her and took her in. She was in an tank outside. I don’t remember what happened to her tho. She lived at my grandparents house. My uncle would also take care of her.

I'm VERY glad that you actually brought them to a sanctuary instead of just dropping them in a pond or lake (like a lot of people do) because if they are just dropped off in the wild that can be harmful to them, other species, and even people! Good job Taylor!

This is an example of why I love Taylor so much,, she cares so deeply about every being so much so that she spent $500 on turtles that she didn't have to save because she knew they wouldn't have good lives and she gave them the chance they never would have gotten. I didn't know buying turtles on the side of the road was a even thing. It's saddening to me that you said the people didn't even care when you told them it was wrong. :/
Riley Smith it's the same for me. This was a very good video educationally. I live in IL and I've never seen any kind of animal being sold on the side of the road. It was nice to be exposed to this kind of animal cruelty so that I know in the future if I see something like this anywhere
Kennedy Kreidell I live in Missouri and I've never seen people selling any animals on the side of the road either. Conservation efforts and animals well-being in general are typically taken very seriously. Though, turtles are often roadkill here, at least on the paved roads that are in more remote, wooded areas. The only thing I've experienced that is close to this, is people selling or just outright giving away kittens and puppies in places like Walmart parking lots, with little regard as to what kind of homes they may end up in. Though I don't think that's illegal, so much as just immoral.
IchiHiki I would agree with that. I love about 20 Minutes outside of STL but on the IL side and I have seen people breed and sell puppies online or over Facebook with no regards as to who they are going to end up with. It's not illegal just I don't think it's morally right

I once lived in an apartment complex and the man below me used to collect turtles and one day I saw one turned over with nail polish on his back and he couldn't move one of his legs so I took him to the vet and got him taken care of. I'm appalled that people can treat living things like this. I have also Donated $175 to help as it is near to my heart ❤️

I have a 15 year old red earred slider and i got her from a vender in the Wisconsin Dell's. Wasn't legal to sell them as they were tiny, so really what the did was sell you a plastic container and gave you the turtle for "free." The more I learn abt this the more I'm upset that a) I gave this person business and b) I don't know if she was wild or not, plus there was no information given at the time of purchase. I've been wanting to set up a pond system like that for her for over a year now, but was told by my parents that she only needs an aquarium and that she's fine where she is. I'm going to show them this video and hope it helps to change their minds and allow me to build her a proper living area. Thank you so much for this video, Taylor!!

I saved about 20 turtles off the side of the road like this in Dallas, TX. It was very sad, in the middle of summer sitting in a 5 gallon black bucket just baking in the sun.. I stopped bought as many as i could afford and took them home and left them go in the pond on my property! Now i get to see my big beauties everyday :D
I got my three three toed box turtle the day we were showing our house to sell. We found her in our yard. I am an experienced animal owner so the turtle is in good hands. Even though I knew how to take care of her, I still went to reptile specialist to make sure my info was correct. I tried to find the owners. She was obviously a pet you could tell because she's very social. The reptile specialist l said she was probably around 20 to 30 years old. She has now been in my backyard for a year having a great diet, and lots of love from the family.

im so glad there is places like these. i used to have a turtle, a painted turtle that i “rescued” from the pet store. he was nearly dead when i got him and we spent over 5000$ on saving his life! but then i fell really ill, i have chronic illnesses and now i’m immunocompromised, so i had to give up my turtle. we donated him to a local nature center that takes care of special needs turtles. they have AMAZING indoor and outdoor ponds for the turtles and he’s really well taken care of and happy. i miss him a lot though, so i go and visit him every few months. he remembers me!

Cool Man Wolves are compassionate animals that are family oriented and protect their young. They're not cruel. My aunt had a large couple of acres for hers and they watched my sister and growled when strangers got close to her. You're wrong.
So many people don't think about all the work that goes into these turtles.. We rescued a red eared slider from a class room. She was fully grown and they were keeping her in a 20 gallon tank with no heater or lamps of any sort. The water was so green you couldn't tell what was in it. She is now living much more comfortably in a 100 gal. tank with everything else she so desperately needed. ❤️

This has to be one of my favorite videos that you've made. I grew up finding box turtles under blackberry bushes and ive always been so disappointed in the pet trade when it comes to turtles and reptiles in general. Seeing this video and knowing that there's a safe place for them not far from me makes me feel a lot better.

My uncle bought me a turtle from the mall, it came in the same thing that the seller of the 80 turtles provided.Of course my baby turtle named Charlie wasn't going to live in that condition. We got him a big tank for him to grow to about 10 inches then we were planning to get a bigger one when he turned 20 inch or just when we thought he needed one, we got him a little land spot, fresh water each day with little drops inside to help his eyes because he was going blind, we gave him everything he needed to survive. He got sick one day and didn't want to eat, my dad came home one day and saw him dead. I was so sad, he was only 4 months. What did I do wrong? I gave him treatment ,fresh water with like vitamin crap in it for turtles,to help him and the water was medium temp., I gave him a place to rest on land, lights,etc. RIP Charlie, i miss him so much.
When I was about 6 or 7 my family bought two turtles from a flea market in Florida (red ear sliders). At the time they were so small you could set them on a quarter and see the edge of it around their shells. When they got to be the size of small plates we set them up a 50 gallon trough in the backyard and gave them a spot to get out of the water. When they got even bigger we figured out it was a male and female so we separated them into their own set ups. At night we would put them in really big tuper wear boxes with air holes drilled in and put them inside so they wouldn't get attacked by predators. About 4 months ago we decided that they shouldn't be living this way, so we took them to a friends ranch. She has a big pond with other wild turtles living there so we thought that our turtles would be fine and learn to hunt for themselves. Our friend says she sees them every once in a while so I hope they're doing ok. These videos have made me so glad that we did that and a little guilty that we didn't do our research before buying baby turtles from a flea market.
just finished watching now I'm changing my townhouse patio (which is very large) to a larger home for my greek tortoise. she is the sweetest tortoise she nuzzles into me. she just deserves a better life and I feel like she is going to love her new home

If its the best for the animal, it has to be done. Sometimes owning animals requires putting your feelings aside and thinking about their's.
Purplesnowball 13 it just reminded me of my puppy that I had to give away (but he would always follow me and sleep with me) but my other dog was getting jealous... which Idk why since she never sleeps with me, but once we gave him away she wasn't depressed anymore. I took both to a pet fair and got him a harness and my dog a tag and she was actually being social. It was kinda a good thing we had him for a bit.
Daiz4 Dayz I think the reason this was easier for Taylor is because it was the plan all along. She got the turtles knowing she would take them to a sanctuary. If she got a pet turtle and was going to keep it then had to give it up I'm sure she would be very sad.

Once I was at the beach and a woman was holding a red eared slider (turtle). And I asked what she was doing and she said she couldn't keep him any more and was releasing him back into the ocean! So I grabbed him and took him to a turtle sanctuary

Its disgusting people still cant see that even reptiles are still living creatures that still need basic life requirements. Whats even worse is some people dont give a fuck regardless the creature is healthy/happy as long as they gain something from it. I hate the myth they only grow as big as their environment. You don't expect kids to fit in a box when they are full grown. sure they are small people, but that's not the point!😡
Right. I hate it too. In a twisted way, they are correct. Any animal, turtle, tortoise, fish, snake, dog, cat, elephant, WHATEVER can be kept in a way too small of an enclosure and only grow to the size of it's enclosure and no further. But that's because the animal is going to die before it grows to it's full size and full potential. So yeah. Technically those vendors are right in saying the turtle will only grow to the size of it's container...but that's only because the turtle is going to die in a few months versus growing and living for 30+ years.

i have two box turtles and for a while we kept them in a tank 1-2 years because they are babies but once we moved we made an area in our back yard dedicated to them so they have a very natural set up and they eat healthy and they are growing
I adopted my turtle almost three years ago. She comes up to the side of her enclosure when I go up to her and tries to climb into my hand. I spent three months trying to find her the right food, substrate, basking area, and decorations. She loves it
It's so sad how people treat turtles(and any animals) turtles are one of my favorite animals, and it hurts to see them like this. Thank you Taylor for showing people what really is going on with them. They deserve better then how people treat them.
