One thing unfortunately you won't be able to appreciate enough about his performance is the kind of variations he brings in the voice of each characters and the different dialects of Malayalam he has used for the particular characters. He is simply the master in that. But as I said, since you depend upon the subtitles to follow the dialogues, that would be something you will sadly miss about his performances.

Ive never seen any actor better in emotional scenes than mommukka...i watch all language movies...i grown up watching legendary actors lik Robert de niro ,al pacino,dd lewis,jack Nicholson,brando,dustin Hoffman,dileep kumar,kamal hasan,mohanlal...but mommuka in emotional scenes is above every1.

'Unda' is the immediate suggestion to begin with. Available in Prime. While watching the movie, keep in mind that he is known for so many iconic police characters. The aggressive, energetic angry young officer roles. But the character in Unda is so grounded and humane to the extend that he will amaze those who are familiar with those earlier roles.

There are many old malayalam movies which are superb and well ahead of time.. The only issue is, the new generation of non-malayalees may not get the true essense due to lack of subtitles

Try to watch Unda First. Unlike his contemporaries, he is ready to try different roles even at this stage of his career and constantly reinventing himself. One such movie is ready for rolling titled as #puzhu. Eagerly waiting for it.

Don't use this as a guide. These are only his serious roles and national awards only consider serious movies. There are so many other movies where he is awesome. His CBI series are still unmatched anywhere in the country. For comedies, there are movies like Rajamanikyam and Pranchiyettan. So many movies. His movies where he plays a supporting role with other actors are something else too.
Until I watched Oru vadakkan veeragatha I was a mohanlal fan. As a kid I always thought Mohanlal was cool and mammooty is boring . When I get matured I was blown away by his acting skills . He can do any kind of roles .A true legend.

'Paleri Manikyam: Oru Pathira Kolapathakathinte Katha' means -Paleri Manikyam: The Story of a Midnight Murder.
'Paleri Manikyam' can't ve translated since it's the name of the place and character respectively.
Something which sort of defines him as an actor happened in 1994. He got his second national award for Vidheyan and Ponthanmada. Surprisingly these two movies had so much in common regarding its 'Master -Servile' relationship theme. Mammootty displayed his range of acting by playing the master in Vidheyan and the servile in Ponthanmada. Two characters which stand in two extreme poles by the same actor in the same year. Rightfully he bagged the national award too. That was a real rare happening in Indian Cinema which no other actor in India has in their credit. You will have to watch both the movies to see what I'm exactly talking about!
Now I don't know how to put my mind into words here. I literally got goosebumps to see your amazement when each of his characters appeared one by one. But not for your reaction here, but the thought about how blown away you would be after watching each of these masterpieces gave me chills. Just watch all of it without miss and thank me later!!

Palerimanikyam is an excellent film. It tells the story of a private detective, who returns to his birthplace to solve a murder mystery that occurred on the same night he was born.
You should watch munnariyippu too. It's a film comes under the genre of aarkariyam, but it's much more than that as a character study.
