Hearing Curt Gowdy doing a game at Shea Stadium makes me immediately think it's an NBC broadcast. Always sounded weird hearing him on CBS. Another great job Dave!!
Man, just seeing a football stadium with the baseball diamond still there was worth this video alone 😅 Growing up in Baltimore, I saw it for decades. Game itself was nicely done as well Dave!
Man I'm 61 years old n I just LOVE the 60's n 70's football....man do I miss the bubble gum football cards. And the NFL Helmets that u can get I. The bu bubble gum machine for a quarter. Good old days.
1971 - I'm 8 years old and there's a Topps football card vending machine at the K-mart and it's distributing cards without having a quarter inserted. We told a K-mart employee about it and he said "Take them - if you don't someone else will." My brothers and I emptied the machine, not realizing it was an independent jobber who owned the machine, not K-mart. One of my brothers still has a boxful of the old mini helmets. Good times.
The 1979 2-14 Detroit Lions vs. the 8-8 New York Jets. The starting QB for the Lions, Jeff Komlo, would later be known infamously for domestic violence vs. his girlfriend, cocaine possession, possible arson at a couple of his homes, and being a fugitive. He would be eventually flee the US and go to Greece. He would later die in a car accident in Greece in 2009.

Today he wouldn't even step foot in jail and we would beg him to take all of our money.
Thanks Dave For This masterpiece The Lions Are My Father’s Favorite Team! And since my old man likes Detroit They are my Second Favorite Team! My Father’s 81 years old and this will definitely Lift he’s spirit’s!
Interesting TV note: Because Shea Stadium was not sold out 72 hours before kickoff, the NFL blackout rule meant this game was not seen in the New York City metro area. WCBS Channel 2 aired alternate programming at 1 pm, then the Bears at Cowboys at 4 pm. WNBC Channel 4 aired Broncos at Falcons at 1 pm. Giants played the Redskins in Washington on Monday Night Football. As a kid growing up in Brooklyn in the late 70's, local blackouts of Jets' home games were common as they were not very good. So this is the first time I've seen this game. Thanks!
I'm in Michigan - Lions blackouts were common for the same reason. My brother is a lifelong Jets fan and we rarely ever saw them on TV around here, so the digital age has been a boon to him.
growing up in the 70s as a jet fan in NYC metro we always preferred road games because we knew they would be on tv....what a dumb thing the blackout rule was...ok you fans didnt buy enough tickets so now you don't get to see the game....lol
Hey Dave thanks so much . 1979 @ Shea . Home games at Shea we had tickets in the closed end on the metal portable bleachers . When the Mets were still playing we didn’t have seats . Can you believe that . The infield at Shea .
I was 7 when this game came on. I didnt start getting into watching football until I turned 8. The Lions was so sorry, I only saw only a small portion of this game and was consumed into playing with my Star Wars toys most of the time when this aired.
1:17 Truck racing and the U.S. Roller Skating Championships…I used to watch that sort of stuff, not because I was a fan but sometimes there was nothing else on the other 3 channels we got at home (prior to cable tv etc.).
Lol!!! 😆. On rare occasions I'd be so desperate that I would go for option #4. PBS. Just praying they would have something showing nature or the show Cosmos.
Schedule is different today. Gowdy said this was only the 2nd ever meeting between the two. Yet this was the 10th season since the merger. With less teams then even. Today every team plays each other once at least every 4 years.
@@sicfrynut Todd had a great arm but was too much of a careless gunslinger to me. Far too many INT's that didnt need to happen. But yes the oline could be so inconsistant. O'Brien had the same issues (though he was terribly immobile and held the ball too long...but not as INT prone)
Watched the 1981 Packers v. Jets season finale, seemed to be much more seating in the end zones and crowd 5,000 times more rowdy with playoff spot on the line.
This game was on September 16, 1979. The Mets had home games throughout the following week against the Cubs, Expos, and Cardinals. Once baseball season was over, the additional stands were installed by the next Jets home game on September 30, 1979 against the Dolphins.
1:01:27 Might be the worst-looking pass completion of all time!😂 Amazing grab by David Hill though. Hank Stram: "Throws it falling away like throwing a hand grenade."😂
Can someone answer a question? When was the last year they played the 2 pm EST games? If memory servers they had 1 pm est kickoffs for eastern teams but teams like the St. Louis Cardinals a hour behind in their time zone wouldn't kick off till 2 pm est.
Gowdy also called a 49ers v. Dolphins game from the Orange Bowl, reminded me of his three Super Bowl telecasts there. Profiled a rookie QB for the Niners who was getting playing time over Steve DeBerg. Whatever became of him?

Absolutely gorgeous picture and sound! Those unis and Shea never looked better!
And the Jets are going back full-time to these uniforms. The Lions should have done the same.
Another beautiful look at Shea Stadium football. God bless you Dave.
I was at this game with my Dad. Upper deck, all I remember is how HOT it was that day. Thanks, Dave! Great seeing this game again! 😊🙏👍🏈

Beautiful job Dave. Thank you again for the trip back in Time. Keep them coming
Absolutely great Video. Could watch Jets games at Shea all day.
Great quality. The green jumps out. Thx Dave
Love it!! Thank you Dave! My 2-14 Lions under the QB prowess of Jeff Komlo!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
And it's weird that the Detroit Lions as of 2024 are actually good now, after decades of mediocrity (or worse, like 2008 0-16 worse).
Never more so than at quarterback- from Bobby Layne to Matthew Stafford, the Lions never had an elite starting quarterback.
My thanks to Gene Smiley and his RUclips channel for providing the source files for this project -- www.youtube.com/@genesmiley9866
Thanks again Dave. The sights and sounds warms my heart.

Jeff Komolo's career fizzled out quickly, but his tragic downfall would make a great "A football Life". A true cautionary tale.
What I find amazing about this era of play is the amount of hand/forearm/elbow padding the linemen wear
With the Raiders it wasn't padding, it was plaster casts - blunt weapons.
Ironic that the N.Y.Jets will be wearing the same looking uniforms and helmet logo for this upcoming season👍
Cool! I just wish the Lions and Broncos had gone back full-time to their uniforms from this era.
Beautiful work - this is why you get thousands of views and I struggle to get a hundred. Kudos.
Thanks Gene :)
Easy to see why the Lions drafted Billy Sims the following season.
Thank you for another game restore Dave.
You can tell it's early in the season because the field still looks good! It would be trash by midseason

Pure Gold
I'm into the 2nd quarter and Walker is absolutely terrorizing Detroit
wesley walker terrorized everyone. better Oline and who knows what stats he / todd could have had.

Either the baseball season was still going on, or they didn't have enough time to set up the end zone stands.

Stan "Hoodlum" Blinka. 14:10
Dave, do you have the 1979 Jets-Patriots week 2 blowout?
No
I just checked my brother's Jets games stash and he doesn't have it either.
Any touchdowns missed ?
1:16:00 Is this Harry Anderson (Night Court)?
I don’t think so but Burton Gilliam from blazing saddles is 1:16:14
Never will see NFL game on a baseball field
PBP: Curt Gowdy
