The place I used to work for, my old boss and the company's owner went stock car racing back in the early 60's too. They were Ford guys and the shop still had three of their mid 60's trucks from the race team into the eighties, which was wicked cool. Back in those days it really didn't take much to go racing, if you had a car, a decent driver and a good mechanic you could race... and win too. Of course money made a big difference but at least at that time a guy in his garage could field a relatively competitive machine... Not any more!
I remember back in the 1970's my ex-fatherinlaw was a mechanic for a small block modified race care . He was known as a carburetor genius. He could build those engines and get that thing running so nobody could touch that car . Race after race they would get boo ' ed because the fans were tired of them always winning. But like everything , it only lasted until my ex-fatherinlaw retired from working on engines. But that time was fun to watch.
+Robert Perrigo Thanks Rob!! Yeah that was a cool place!! Especially if you're into racing!! I am a huge Marty Robbins Fan, so seeing that Car in person Blew Me away!!☺
Good to see Marty's car was restored. I still remember him racing against the "Big Names". He was getting so frustrated at the back of the pack, he just wanted to run up front. So one race (I think Daytona) he 'tweeked' the engine performance, by removing the restrictor plate ! He moved past everyone to the front of the pack, like he always wanted to do.. Of coarse he got disqualified, but he says it was worth it. His "El Paso" was the best song of all time (in my book).
It really is sad to see all the old speedways that have been around for 5 or more generations fall out of repair and close down for good. I live in Niles Michigan and about 15 miles or so from me is the South Bend Motor Speedway witch is a 1/4 mile asphalt oval that has been around for more than 60 years. It has been closed from time to time over the years but is open once again. My dad use to take me there to watch demolition derby's and the stock cars run there. I am 52 years old now and I use to take both of my step kids there. I still go from time to time and still have a lot of fun there. It will be a sad day when it does close for good. I just hope that doesn't happen for another 60 years.
Brad Here in the Chicago area tracks are dropping like flies. Santa Fe speedway(1995), Hales Corners(Wi. early 2000's), Crown Point(In. 2005), Freeport (Il. early 2000's) and now LaSalle(Il.) is for sale and probably will be bull dozed. All within an hour and half of Chicago.
Cool vid, lots of old stock car goodies, and old signs! It reminds me of one time we went to the local races, there was a crash, and a car tire broke off, and flew over top of the grandstands (about 20 feet from us) and smashed out a car windshield when it landed down below!
+Aust1n's Reviews & More Used to be able to pick up the side valve bikes for cheap back in the 1960's. If only I had known what they'd end up selling for, could've bought them all up and would be living high on the hog today!
+John Ratko yeah, it's amazing the price differences from then to today. But it's interesting though that radios back then in the 20's were around $100, but at a flea market I could get a 20's radio for $5 today. I wonder why.
That was awesome I did a bunch of racing up hear at Thompson speedway in CT. Where and when is this show? I would love to come down and see it. I'm originally from Boonton NJ
Back in the 70s my dad had an office just like this in an warehouse, he said he loved it, it was always dirty, and he said he used to take a crap right on the floor and had a shovel there to scoop it
+Alex Street I left just before it started raining, but was stuck there for 3 hrs because I was parked way in the back and everybody bailed at the same time and tied things up!!☺
Mirror mirror on the wall God damn ,,no good Henny Youngman Jokes ,but how about this , A Jew gets hit by a car ,cop comes over lays him on his back and says " are you comfortable " Jew says " I make a living " ! Lol anyway ,,,fav video of the week buddy ,,thanks ! Ol Marty was one of my faves 😊

The Marty Robbins car was restored by Ray Everenham's crew on "Americarna" tv show.
