In the music video Janet Jackson portrays a lounge singer during the time of apartheid in South Africa. The video is inspired by a blend of 1960s and 1970s South African culture, as evidenced by the Drum magazine, Lion beer, and "slegs Blacks" signs that were all over the country. These signs indicate that Black people were not allowed to use or enter certain areas. The dressing style of the people in the video was inspired by the work of Malick Sidibé and Seydou Keita, two photographers from Mali. The video is a powerful statement against racism and discrimination. It shows that even in the darkest of times, there is always hope and beauty. It also celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Black people.

EVERY frame in this video is like a painting. This is a fricken masterpiece of video editing, and like all great work it continues to stand the test of time. And the track is DOPE!
That’s because the video directly references “real” photos from DRUM magazine (a South African publication noted chiefly for its early 1950s and 1960s reportage of township life under apartheid). It was stylised and directed as such. Therefore taking on a very “photogenic” or “painting esque” look (as you say). Madonna used to do the same in some of her videos (she used the same director Mark Romanek). What makes this a masterpiece, in my opinion, is it’s blatant celebration of black culture (be it South African or otherwise), it’s lack of whitewashing or watering down of black pride , and it’s display of “real” love for beauty within black community (not conventual at all in American terms). That might not sound like much in 2020 post Beyoncé, Lauren Hill, (and Rihanna to an extent). But at the time it had never been done on mainstream US media, let alone on MTV (so white). If you like how this video looks, try and get your hands on some old copies of DRUM magazine.

@@charliehustle9779 I thought it was Dilla. If not, then life goes on. To be fair, I didn't see his name in the production credits. May I ask, who did produce this wonderful beat, then?
Actually, although she may be depicting South Africa (and its Apartheid history) in this video, it isn't much different from what was it like in America before the civil rights movement in the 60's...and had she depicted the american racism reality that still persists up until now (police black lives' killings/"black lives matter" is just an example), she would have been banned immediately from all major media channels in the US and her career then (in 1997) seriously dammaged...and I want to give her all the props for depicting "BLACKNESS" as a beautiful and natural thing (she's not even wearing any make up in here)...I personally hate the "african american" label, as it is less correct/accurate than simply "black american"...because many black americans aren't simply descendants solely from "african blood"...and this was me (an european white dude) saying it, for that matter...
@@SmartRobot-wc2fb ARE YOU REALLY A "EUROPEAN WHITE DUDE"??? If you are why on earth would you worry yourself about black people if they are called Black Americans or African-Americans??? As a South African, I second that comrade, this lady has rocked us ever since
Perhaps one of the most amazing pieces of media ever.
Looking back at her music she had so much style and different ways of singing. This song is very smooth!
I, honestly, never saw a better music video. This masterpiece is timeless. True art.
no lie
This and NIN. Polar opposites but the two are brilliant🔥🔥🔥
i dont think she gets enough credit for her music video catalog. her shit might not be as theatric as her brother or as flashy and groundbreaking as Busta and Missy but as far as quality and iconic Janet videos are top tier
She has several Grammys for her videos to prove your point. Back when Grammys were not brought. Hello! She is the First MTV Icon for a reason. I’ll hush
uh Ever seen rhythm nation. IF? What's It GOnna Be? Escapade Runaway?
dude you have no idea what you're talking about
@@slystonedtuna I AM FULLY AWARE of her catalog. im talking about the ppl that tend to leave her out when they talk about artists with great videos. u always hear missy busta michael i even hear ppl say ludacris. what im saying is she should be one of the first names mentioned without even really having to think about it
She was way better than Busta and Missy lmao.
Who still feels the beauty of this song in 2023?
LOVE this video!
I love seeing images of Black people enjoying each other and vibing off of each other in a way that only we can.
Earthling Crusader j adore
+Earthling Crusader I can't upvote this more than once (sadface), but know that I want to.
Peace!
Racist
+will morrissey - it's not racist, it's cultural..
+will morrissey there was never once i referral to skin colour, nobodys skin is black. However, this person was referring to culture and the niceness of seeing black culture being represented in such a natural, beautiful and realistic manor opposed to how it is represented in todays day and age.
This song and video ( as a South African) is everything💙💜💙
Ntuli ❤❤❤

listen to this with headphones and close your eyes!...You're welcome.
on weed, even better
Francisco Emiliano Pastrana😂😂😂😂
Thank you
this dood high
Thank you 🎧😊
This song will live on for many more moons. A pure classic ❤
All y'all : dont forget who is the true genius behind this beautiful piece of music. J Dilla. Rest in power.
@@hazyviews no Dilla also did the original, he just wasn't credited. Industry politics. This joint is 100% Dilla/SV...
Does have that J Dilla feel about it tbh.
Des'ree should get the credit
This song as the person above me rightly says, should be credited to DESEREE. Listen to the Deseree song Feel so high. This is where the credit belongs. The $3million settlement Deseree got agreed... Not even sure who the person who you are crediting is. But the Janet song was plagiarised.
This tune has been ringing in my head for years..never knew which song it was..discovered it recently..I feel at peace now.
Me too. This came out when I was grade 1 I think
Same here
Oh me too. I just found out today. But it's been disturbing me for years. Like a mission I had to carry out
'I feel at peace now.' haha
It’s a sample of big yellow taxi by Joni Mitchell. They shouted her out in the video
This video is art. Full of mystery, beauty and total confusion, but which comes together to make perfect sense
She is trendsetter. Ahead of her time. Todays artists could NEVER
I heard this song back when I was still living in Africa, in my teenage years. Still giving me goosebumps
Same here, having goosebumps right now😊
One of the greatest ever examples of how robust a vocal sample correctly. Janet is a goddess ❤️
She's beautiful!!!
J Dilla on the beat
@@dylan4102I don’t know why y’all keep telling this lie.
@@charliehustle9779 I thought it was Dilla. If not, then life goes on. To be fair, I didn't see his name in the production credits. May I ask, who did produce this wonderful beat, then?
This song is food for the soul, so soothing and all... And the video is easily one of favorite among Janet's masterpieces
That beat is so smooth and goes so well with Janet singing and Q-tip voice and flow.
Is it wrong to say that this is the song that cemented my love for African American culture when I was 10 years old, living in the whitebread suburbs?
Not at all 👏🏾
nobodyhome10108 actually she is depicting South Africa here.
I noted the brand of alcoho, Drum Magazine, dompass, etc.. That is South Africa
@@SmartRobot-wc2fb ARE YOU REALLY A "EUROPEAN WHITE DUDE"??? If you are why on earth would you worry yourself about black people if they are called Black Americans or African-Americans???
To me you sound like a black person who doesn't like to be associated with Africans. There are black people who claim to be proud of their blackness but don't wanna be associated with Africans or Africanness. They HATE everything about Africans.
Maybe it's because of all the negative news they watch on tv about Africa and it's people.
You should feel ashamed of yourself for having so much hatred. Educate yourself and DON'T believe everything you read or see on tv on news channels.
the cinematography of this video is flawless
I love the pride of being black in this video... Never really realize it before i was too Young :)
crazy that it was a white boy that directed this. still hits the feels
@@ozkwati ... Didn't know that ...
Masterpiece.
Anthony Stephenson 100% agree
agree!
Some of us lived through very interesting times in the 90s. It was never like today..
Can we take a minute to appreciate how under rated this video is. This should have won an award !! such a masterpiece like “Made for now” Janet never fails ❤️🍾
It won a grammy
It did win a Grammy but the MTV video music awards totally ignored it like they usually do with Janet. This should've been one of several MTV Video of the year awards under Janet's belt.
She won most stylish music video at the VH1 Fashion Awards '98.
The lack of views makes me want to cry
Doesn't matter -- we know this is the shit
People that respect true talent and original music are here.. this song gives me goosebumps.! *love*
I like to think of it as my Little secret
It's stolen so I don't see why it should have more recognition
mazvita musendo coz no one is tweaking, and it shows true black beauty.
Janet looks so beautiful and pure in this video
Beautiful artists collaborating together to bring us nothing but pure rhythmical JOY: Thank you ❤
All of Janet's hits never fails us
Janet's her finest songs are these smooth r&b tracks, like What Have You Done For Me Lately and That's the Way Love Goes and this one...all 3 are sooooo masterclass 😎
Happier times in the 1990s!!! And happy birthday to queen janet!! And many more
Because we loved our blackness back then. And I'm glad to see some still do.😊
Ahhhh, the 90's!
Twas EVERYTHING!
THANK YOU JANET, TIP, UMMAH, and especially DILLA!!!
Black excellence.
Excellence regardless.
Music is colourless
... In full effect !!! ...
... Yes !!! .. Black Excellence !!! ... People always talkin' phuck about music being colorless ... Bull phuckin' shit !!! ... Black Excellence represented dam well !!! ...
Yes in my humble opinion 🙌🏾✨
I still LOVE this song, its relevance, its feel, its look Thank you Janet Jackson and Q Tip for your existence!
One of the most beautiful music videos of all time.
Please, lord could you just let the Jackson family live forever? I don't know what the world would be without Black music.
Velvet Rope is one of the best albums . A masterpiece
2019 and still jamming this
Of course!
me too, she's amazing like her bro !

No it’s just black American culture. Big world out there.
@@everydayestebanThere were many different Blk cultures infused.. what are you on?
What a timeless classic yo
If the world was to end this song would start it again
You tube views don't mean a thing to me. Janet Jackson is a queen.
There are very few perfect music videos, this is one of them. Absolute perfection. Romanek and Janet were untouchable.
Love Janet Jackson 💞
Who's going to see her in Concert this year 2024 🎉🥳🥰💕💕⭐😍
St.Louis Jun24😊
Now this combo of Janet and Q tip is a bloody great tune. The beat does things to me everytime...❤
