  • Dachshunds can be trained! One of the biggest keys I have learned on my dog training journey is to be patient - to wait for a dog to offer the command I know that they understand. I was able to capture that "trick" in the video.
I trained Whistler Dachshund to sit on a "place" mat in only 5 sessions of 2-5 minutes each (less than 25 minutes). While I still need to put a lot of work into proofing this command, I'm proud that I achieved a solid start in such a short time.
It's important that a dog be able to feel with their feet that they are in the correct position. That's why I used a rubber mat (bath mat turned upside down) for the target - rubber is likely different than any texture his little toe beans have felt before.
The "place" command is a dog training tool that teaches dogs to go to a specific spot (usually a mat or cot) and stay there until they are released.
Once trained, the place command can be used as a tool to help keep your Dachshund from rushing the door when someone knocks, from being underfoot while you're cooking, chilling at a restaurant while you're enjoying lunch with a friend, and much more. It also helps a dog learn impulse control, which can help with problem behaviors in other scenarios.
Whistler is a 9 month old miniature Dachshund who is staying with us for a couple of weeks while his parent's are on vacation. Before his visit, they asked if I could work on training him to "sit on a specific object". We chose the word "place" for this, which is the most common command used for this (I use "mat"). However, you can choose whatever word makes sense for you and then teach your dog what that means.
Although I have been instinctually and naturally my training Dachshunds as we go about our daily lives for over a decade, I'm newer to teaching during formal obedience training sessions. So go easy on me when you watch the video. Ha, ha. I cut out repetitions but left in my mistakes so you could see that 1) I am human and make mistakes like everyone else and 2) a Dachshund can learn a command even if your technique is sloppy.

@alejandrorecinosanderson834 He is not mine so I'm not sure where he came from. I'm just watching him while his parents are out of town. There is a breeder in Washington state where we live that breeds dachshunds like him called Sandstone dachshunds.
