  • A few months ago, we had the chance to film the all-new 2025 MINI Cooper S F66. The gasoline-powered Cooper was present at a secret location and we teamed up with Oliver Heilmer, head of MINI Design, to explore its new styling.
    In this video, Oliver talks about the exterior and interior design of the F66 MINI Cooper S, pointing out some of the differences also from the MINI Cooper Electric. In the front, the new MINI has a more simple bumper design that no longer has the vertical slats that the outgoing F56 got as part of its second facelift. The apron also appears to have a slightly different shape, and it stays horizontal all the way across the bumper; it doesn’t kick up where it meets the grille as it did on the older model. The grille itself appears to have an identical outline to the outgoing model’s, but its inner design is different.
    The shape of the 2025 MINI Cooper S F66 is different to follow the contour of the light clusters, and the bumper has a simpler, more minimalist shape than before. It’s so minimalist that there is no longer a visible exhaust pipe poking through the faux diffuser, even though the vehicle shown in the photos is a Cooper S.
    Inside, the 2025 MINI Cooper S features a new 9.4-inch circular OLED infotainment display that runs the new MINI Operating System 9.
    This is an exclusive first video of the 2025 MINI Cooper S so let's take a look!

    I'm sooo disappointed in the direction MINI has taken with the clear focus on minimalism in their approach rather that celebrating the sporty larger than life appeal that has made the brand so celebrated the world over. They have bacically just sucked all the life out of the car with nothing that really pleases the eye or is exciting in terms of what MINI has offered in previous gens.

  • @DanDiMaggio
    @DanDiMaggio 11 месяцев назад +56

    Am I crazy or does this look more like a facelift than an actual new gen? Also hiding the exhaust is the wrong move imo. The bulk of Mini enthusiasts that I've met are going to dislike that. They've basically removed all the "sportiness" with this minimalistic design language. Who told them that was a good idea? It certainly wasn't current Mini owners.

    • @A_Jay13
      @A_Jay13 11 месяцев назад +7

      Totally with you on this point @DanDiMaggio. One of the main key design elements of the Cooper S since BMW took over was the Hood Scoop (even if not functional) and the 2 Mid-placed exhaust pipes. It looked unique and made the Cooper S/ JCW stand out. Curious what @FrankStephensondesign says about it.

      So, they decided to take away the two design elements that differentiated the S from the base model? Imagine that makes production more efficient, but it won't make current S owners happy.

    Every time he said “we decided to focus on what was necessary” it really means “we cut cost” got rid of the vents and angles in the front to save production cost. And removed the FINISHED exhaust so they didn’t have to design a rear diffuser or muffler.
    You got to fire a whole interior design department because you got rid of all of the buttons inside for a screen (that has a load time when you change drive modes the software is so bad) so there is zero elements of Mini inside.
    But somehow this is going to be the most expensive mini ever! They are going to price people out if looks and “miniacs” don’t like this.
    Very very very sad to see them ignore their customers and leave them with this for their option. I’m going to drive my 24 jcw laughing anytime I see one of these (if anyone buys one)

    Thanks for the vid - nice to see some content for the ICE car. Two quick questions, not sure if you might know?
    1) On the configurator (in the UK anyway), there is now the option between 'Automatic DCT transmission' and 'Sport Automatic DCT transmission' - do we have any further info as to what this means? Is it literally the case that 'Sport' designated cars have paddles fitted to the wheel and standard car's don't? Or is there more to it than that? i.e. sport gearbox = faster gear changes?
    2) Early prototype reviews of the Mini J01 mentioned that the steering feel/accuracy was significantly improved, will this also translate to the petrol models or is this EV only?
    Thanks :)

    It's interesting how they've adapted the F56 platform. It's also understandable how the adaptations signal the demise of combustion power. There's no sense in creating a new platform for outgoing technology. Overall, I like the styling upgrades. Oddly enough, I might recommend the automatic over the manual based on my experience with a manual F56. Unless they've made improvements, I found the shift action disappointing with overly notchy effort, heavy clutch pressure and long pedal travel. It felt like driving a truck. Perhaps I'm spoiled by my Miata. However, I do find the electric Mini intriguing. I'm ready for that test drive.

    Be warned I had one of the first F56 Coopers on the road. 18 times it was it for faults, It had design flaws that still existed for the whole build life, door rubbers that rubbed away the paint, frameless windows that had to drop in frost toget in the Car till your regulator goes bang at £400. My Coop was off the road for a month waiting for a part after a display failure ( Curtesy 5 series for the duration) Rattle that still today remain that they could never find but could hear. They found the fuse box didn’t have screws so rattled, wiring went across the dash underneath that shouldn’t that rattled on a central vent under the windscreen. The light and button unit on the roof inside had loose screws rolling about and the cables were not how they should have been. It was around 14 months of the car in and out and I was furious at the time.
    But and this is the but I still liked the car and the way it drove when the things didn’t annoy you -so much so it’s out on the drive just now on low miles and will be Ten years old in April. It sister sits beside it a Nov 2021 build Clubman. Just not enough changes and I promised i’d never buy a MINI early in production again. Still love the brand. What’s next sadly the EV doesn’t cover the road trips i go on holiday etc and looking at various other brands even back to one of my dad’s favourite Volvo EX30 that is just a great looking rocket ship. Probably be scary what the new Coopers start at. I was at the launch of the new EV still to hit the road when it did it’s tour round the country and the sticker price ok it was the sports pack on it but was £43k for a Cooper EV😢 Madness.
    Shame it’s only a Auto box now and no side scuttles. No separate fog lights that you could tell a MINI from a distance. And really guys if you asked owners I bet 90% would say why the rear lights are like that nothing MINI about them looks more Peugeot too me or Renault. That designer guy can talk a lot of hot air right enough. Why is it like this ? because it was cheaper just say it. Why does he say it’s a “S” at the end surly the S and works have visible exhausts. Presentation was a bit of a train crash if you ask me does the BMW guy actually know the product or just shoved in because he seemed lacking in parts, no offence.

    I’m loving the streamlined design and love the fact they kept MINI Cooper small but still have all safety requirements. One thing I will miss is the hood scoop. The taillight design did throw me off, but I like the way we can change the look of it, so that’s cool. MINI has to streamline the car design to keep up with industry and for airflow to prepare for all electric in the near future to help with range. Like it or not , we’re all going electric EV Infrastructure will advance in the US we have to, fossil fuels will run out on Earth. ❤ 🌍

      Actually no, we are not all going electric. The world governments have now realized its not working out very well and are updating the mandates as we speak. They can't get the infrastructure in place, especially for people that live in apartment buildings; they have no where to charge. The public charging stations are unreliable, broken and/or not maintained because companies are losing money on them. So that's a flop. Fortunately, the more intelligent car companies are now developing alternative fuels which are much better than electricity. They realized early on that manufacturing EV batteries are highly destructive to the planet due to the required mining and the overall pollution footprint of an EV is worse than a ICE vehicle. Most electricity comes from fossil fuels, so every time you charge your EV, you are actually flipping a switch to burn a fossil fuel which generates the electricity. So by your notion, if we run out of fossil fuels then we will run out of electricity. There are other ways of generating electricity but they are typically not reliable, too dangerous or too expensive. And forget about recycling an EV battery. It's too expensive. Mini and many other car companies tried to go full EV by 2025 and are now realizing they put their money on a losing horse. EV's are not the future.

      @@bigmacdaddy1234 I realize there will be other fuel sources needed in the future, electricity and hydrogen vehicles or hybrid. Manufacturers going one way or the other. Either way we will run out of oil at some point in the future and will still need to streamline the cars to help with wind resistance, that is the reason for the drastic change in the outside look of pretty much all future cars.

    • @bigmacdaddy1234
      @bigmacdaddy1234 10 месяцев назад

      @@jennifergray6795 Actually, no. We won't run out of oil. The depth of the earth's core is very deep with plenty of wells to pull from and we barely scratched the surface. Cars have already been streamlined a long time ago with gasoline and so far EV's have proven not to be the better alternative. People vote with their wallets which is why EV sales have been tanking in 2024.

      The base model is the MINI Cooper C, which is powered by a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that makes 156 horsepower and 230 Nm (169 lb-ft). The MINI Cooper S gets a 2-liter, four-pot turbo with 204 horsepower and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft). Both are slightly more powerful than outgoing equivalent models, and they sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 7.7 and 6.6 seconds, respectively.

Proportionately and in terms of overall impression, it's better than the 3rd gen. 👎for lack of manual and visible exhaust primarily. Looking forward to seeing the aftermarket and actual road performance. Other egregious design features I dislike here dont offend me as much as the F56.
