EJ, you're my hero for many years. Your selflessness, positiveness and willingness to share priceless knowledge - just invaluable for me. Thank you a lot!
Aedd! Thanks so much for your kind words. It's people like you that encourages me to keep making tutorials and wanting to help others learn! Appreciate you and your support! :)
I think it takes guts and will to create free learning resources. Many people don't want to share their knowledge because they fear others may get better. Thank you!
.. still very new to 3D/C4D (only slowly discovering all of these basic concepts - and still feeling a bit overwhelmed, sometimes) - but - again (as with all your other tuts) - I again learnt so much from this single video .. Thanks!
Awesome work as always EJ. Ya know another cool way I found to increase or decrease the intensity of your HDRI is by selecting Illumination in the material's property. Then adjusting the Generate GI "Strength".
"In real life you have a lot of bounces in your scene". - So true. When I added light mapping to the basement it made a huge difference. :) LOL - Your tutorials are always informative and entertaining.
you are indeed such a hero bro !! i'm really new to c4d but i have learn quit good way because I've watching your videos in pre learning time !! thank you !!
EJ! You could make the sky a chlid of the texture sphere, and rotate the sphere instead of the texture. Set the sphere to "not visible in render" and the sky to "visible" which'll save some time.
I actually leave the blurriness of the reflect to AE... I just do a multipass and blur the reflect inside AE, that way i can lower the render time. just sharing. Keep up, lov your vids man. Cheers from Brazil
Duuuude I'm sitting here messing with global illumination and wondering how to get a proper result, get frustrated, open RUclips and what do I see? Thank you so much for this ! Gil
Good tutorials! It was a doubt I had alwayd had, I'm beginners on C4d and I wondered if it was possible illuminate only with hdri's? I see that it' s possible, right? Congratulations for your tutorials man!
Helllo EJ ! Great and smart tutorial as always ! Can u give us some informations about GI and Animation ? Impossible for me to get some "non vibrating lights" :-/
Any material that is non-metal has a reflection on the greyscale. There should not be any color in the reflection in normal instances to make it look more realistic. Great tut though!
Thank you. Is there any way to turn off the shadows cast by HDRi and use HDRI only for reflections? I am trying to use the compositing tag on the HDRi Sky object - but unchecking 'Cast Shadow' does not seem to work?
Hey it's me again, sometimes I get some bad GI "Stains", how do GI Portals help and what are they exactly? Thanks in advance, always looking forward to your new videos, especially on rigging and IK ; )
Depends on what you mean, are you talking about splotchiness on the objects? That would be fixed by upping the GI samples. GI Portals are used in conjunction with objects, like Planes, not HDRI's. There's a good description of them in the C4D Help file!
Ahhhh how to I describe them... It's something like when I tried to use photometric light in Maya with Mentalray and not having enough photons thus getting a very splotchy light around the edges. I think upping the GI samples are going to do the trick! Thanks a lot and keep 'em coming!
I really like this. Helps a lot. What I don't get is how your scene is setup. I am not sure where to place the nature lighting, looks like you have one under something called Sky. How do I create that, so I can place it there?
this is wonderful. thank you so much for your great way of share your knowledge :) but whats about rendering animations with GI turned on? in the past (not physical render) i was fighting against flickering and stuff like that. Maybe you can make another lesson for this ?
how does he have the "View" window up. It'a not in the window menu. Also how are his results rendering so fast? What's the steps for this? This was already setup at the beginning of tut.
Hey EJ, amazing tutorials! Have you ever considered creating a series on C4D for beginners? I would love to follow along but I have no idea whats going on at times haha.
Hey Mohammed, glad you enjoy the tutorials but they're a lot of work to put together and I have no plans of making PDF's of them, so you'll have to learn via video format!
hi EJ.... I've learned a lot from your videos over the months but currently am baffled about trying to lessen the hdri image reflection on glass... I've tried lessening the reflection on the glass material but its still the same as it is at 100% and the compositing tag checking off "seen by reflection" but it still shows
EJ, i trying to render my scene with default settings, but i've got black screen in result and also i don't have shadows from object on both view screens. Please help! Thank you
thanks for the great tutorial. but one critical problem, using your GI setting I got inconsistent in animation, the flickering is way too obvious and impossible to not notice. I thought it's because of my rough reflection that cause it but i can certain that it's the GI problem after a few test. Google a bit and this seems a common problem and yet no obvious solution other than QMC, which is like 10 times slower with lots of grain at reasonable rendering time.... But I am using your setting on a dark room with lots of TV screen, the screens being the only light source. So is this setting only viable for HDRI / physical sky light setting but not from illimination texture? Thanks!
I'd up the IR or QMC samples if you're seeing that flickering. Also upping those Adaptive samples as well and testing to see how far you need to push it!
Hello EJ, I've been learning from you and recently i ran into a problem is that when i open GI using Irradiance Cache + Secondary Method, render in animation there's noticeable flicker all the time, i try to fix it by click "full animation"or crank up the sample count + quality, or by click Identical Noise Distribution, none of them really working, the problem still remains, I know its sounds impossible but is there anyway to decrease the flicker and solve this?
Thank you for the tutorial. Great as always. Could I make a suggestion / request for a tutorial?. I don't know if its possible to achieve but I´ve seen some of your tutorials when you work around materials and Im trying to make a material to mimic zx spectrum graphics and with no luck. I tried with sketch and cell shader but I can't get it right. Do you think you could give it a try?. I also searched the web and found nothing. Thank you.
thank you so much for this tut!! it's wonderfull :D i have a question, in an architectual visualization once i turn on GI my sky stops to render, turning that area all black! why does that happen :(
Hey Maria! Thanks for watching! Not sure what the issue would be...do you have an HDRI image applied to the Sky Object? Are you trying to light an interior?
Hi ej - really hope you can help me with this cos nobody answered at all the forums i posted. I have shadow turned on in this light and it is placed inside a box with an opening - but the visible light seems to be penetrated from the wall as you can still see the cone rather than a square cone. what am i doing wrong? tinypic.com/r/i77h9l/9 tinypic.com/r/2hn5bm9/9

You'll get it with practice and getting more familiarity! You can do it! And I'll help the best I can! :)
Thanks for watching and the kind comment!
EJ, you're the best. Your tutorials help me a lot.
Thanks Gustavo! Always love hearing that my videos help somebody out there! :)

I am still trying to learn more about lightning in C4D. This was very helpful. Thnx EJ!
Very welcome! Glad you found it helpful!
Awesome work as always EJ. Ya know another cool way I found to increase or decrease the intensity of your HDRI is by selecting Illumination in the material's property. Then adjusting the Generate GI "Strength".
Good call! Definitely another good alternative!
"In real life you have a lot of bounces in your scene". - So true. When I added light mapping to the basement it made a huge difference. :) LOL - Your tutorials are always informative and entertaining.
:) Glad you find them entertaining as well as informative! Thanks for watching, Tim!
This is the best tutorial ever, there´s so much info, I always go back to this one, huge thanks!! :D

Suhweeet! Thanks so much for watching and glad you're learning C4D!!
I love your teaching style!! SUBSCRIBED!!!!
Again a great tut. Now I understand this Global Ilumination :-)
Glad to hear! Thanks for watching!
Excellent short tuts - very effective - helping accelerate my knowledge and skill level - thank you
glad to hear it! thanks so much for the kind comment!
This means a lot, especially when working on real projects! Thankyou for your Knowledge
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching, glad you're finding the tutorials useful!
EJ - this is sooooo helpful, thank you so much for sharing. I feel like I have a much better handle on materials and lighting!!!
So awesome to hear, Kelly! Glad you found this helpful and you're understanding materials and lighting more! Happy to help!
Awesome tutorial. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Thanks for watching!
EJ! You could make the sky a chlid of the texture sphere, and rotate the sphere instead of the texture. Set the sphere to "not visible in render" and the sky to "visible" which'll save some time.
Very true! Thanks for the handy tip!
I actually leave the blurriness of the reflect to AE... I just do a multipass and blur the reflect inside AE, that way i can lower the render time.
just sharing.
Keep up, lov your vids man. Cheers from Brazil
Thanks Joao! That's one way to do it, for sure! Or just buy Octane! :)
Your tutorials are lit! In the slang way.
Heyooo! Thanks haha
u grant my wish man. I always wanted to know more about lighting and render. thanks
Awesomeeee!! Glad I could help, hope you like this one!
It's really helpful for me, thanks.
Happy to hear it! Thanks very much for watching!
Great tutorial, as always.
EJ, any plans to take some shots at the Render Wars? Would love to see you tackling some Arnold/Redshift/Octane renders...
Definitely! In fact this week I believe I got an Octane video coming! :) Stay tuned!
great video man
great tutorial.
great! i like your teaching style. have a nice life
Thanks Mustafa! Really appreciate the support!
Duuuude I'm sitting here messing with global illumination and wondering how to get a proper result, get frustrated, open RUclips and what do I see? Thank you so much for this ! Gil
Love the timing sometimes! :) Hope this is helpful for you!
Thank you EJ!
Thank YOU for watching :)
Good tutorials! It was a doubt I had alwayd had, I'm beginners on C4d and I wondered if it was possible illuminate only with hdri's? I see that it' s possible, right? Congratulations for your tutorials man!
Very possible but not always fast! Thanks for watching!
Helllo EJ ! Great and smart tutorial as always ! Can u give us some informations about GI and Animation ? Impossible for me to get some "non vibrating lights" :-/
Learnt a lot / Thanks!! you got my like
agree with max triet - thx much!
thank u , i always want to know how this thing (GI) work but can't figure out . this helped a lot
Was it helpful? Hope that this tutorial is useful for those who have never used GI before! Thanks for watching!
Why aren't you using the progressive setting on the physical renderer to speed up the render for previewing purposes? Great tutorial btw.
I tried that but it didnt speed it up too much, and the results looked pretty bad so wouldnt have helped for demo purposes.
Any material that is non-metal has a reflection on the greyscale. There should not be any color in the reflection in normal instances to make it look more realistic. Great tut though!
I push blue like button :D
haha nice!
Hi nice tutorial. What is your PC setup? CPU and GPU? :) Rendering looks fast
very good tutorial. may i ask what setup you have? (cpu,..)
Nothing good, I have an 8 core Mac Pro trash can
Thank you. Is there any way to turn off the shadows cast by HDRi and use HDRI only for reflections? I am trying to use the compositing tag on the HDRi Sky
object - but unchecking 'Cast Shadow' does not seem to work?

Yep, that sounds like upping the samples should solve that!
I really like this. Helps a lot. What I don't get is how your scene is setup. I am not sure where to place the nature lighting, looks like you have one under something called Sky. How do I create that, so I can place it there?
Not sure what you're speaking of? I show my scene setup in the tutorial and how I light it using the Sky object and HDR image.
this is wonderful. thank you so much for your great way of share your knowledge :)
but whats about rendering animations with GI turned on?
in the past (not physical render) i was fighting against flickering and stuff like that. Maybe you can make another lesson for this ?
Oh man, that's a whole other subject for sure. And a long render! :)
EJ! love the dress, you have to tell me where you got it!
how does he have the "View" window up. It'a not in the window menu. Also how are his results rendering so fast? What's the steps for this? This was already setup at the beginning of tut.
Great stuff, THANKS!
Thanks very much for watching!
Hey EJ, amazing tutorials! Have you ever considered creating a series on C4D for beginners? I would love to follow along but I have no idea whats going on at times haha.
Totally! Stay tuned!
Very good! Inscribed on your channel to receive more wonderful content like this. Greetings from Brazil ;)
I really enjoy your funny and helpful tutorials but I hope you make them PDFs to be easier to understand! !
thanks
Hey Mohammed, glad you enjoy the tutorials but they're a lot of work to put together and I have no plans of making PDF's of them, so you'll have to learn via video format!
eyedesyn OK thanks

Sounds like you aren't using GI with a Sky Object?
thanks for the great tutorial. but one critical problem, using your GI setting I got inconsistent in animation, the flickering is way too obvious and impossible to not notice. I'd up the IR or QMC samples if you're seeing that flickering. Also upping those Adaptive samples as well and testing to see how far you need to push it!
so I should not used IR+light map, but QMC + light map?
Id do a test with high IR samples and see if that works, if it doesnt, maybe QMC is the best route! Keep me updated on your results!
What are you using for Secondary Method? I typically use Light Mapping and crank up the Path Count, hopefulyl that would help!
There could'nt be better timing for this video than now
Thanks! Hope you like it!
Thank you.
Hey Pedro! Not entirely sure what you mean by the XZ Spectrum Graphics? COuld you point me to a link?
thnks alot
you bet, thanks for watching!
35:56 Good tip. Thanks!
You bet, thanks!
thank you so much for this tut!! it's wonderfull :D i have a question, in an architectual visualization once i turn on GI my sky stops to render, turning that area all black! why does that happen :(
Hey Maria! Thanks for watching! Not sure what the issue would be...do you have an HDRI image applied to the Sky Object? Are you trying to light an interior?
eyedesyn hey! Thank you very much for the response. I don't know what I did but it's working now
great
how can I get the HDRI lightning with out having to render the sky texture?
Is it normal if rendering with HDRI and low settings completely murders my CPU?
Normal if you're running an old computer setup or lacking RAM/slow GFX card!
I'm using C4D R13 but don't see HDRI in lighting set ups.
I think I found it but its organized differently.
Nintendo switchhh
Damn i wish i had Cinema 4D. i can't get my demo to work with after effects cc for whatever reason :/
Cinema 4D Lite? If you go to File > New > Cinema 4D File, does it open up Cinema 4D Lite?
Oh hey it does! :D
it didn't open when i started the program called 'Cinema 4D Demo', but cinema 4d lite works.
thanks for that! :)
Yeah it's weird that you need to open Cinema 4D through After Effects but that's the way it is! :)
best
Thanks!
Nintendo Switch inspired design? Looks like a pair of neon joy cons.
That's precisely the inspiration for the design!
link download HDRI Lighting please.
"This scene is lit"
Gotta throw some lame puns in there somewhere!
Ayyye it's lit lol
Heyooooo!
Hi ej - really hope you can help me with this cos nobody answered at all the forums i posted. i need a download for hdri studio
You can get it on greyscalegorilla.com/store
Your camera is a little low quality. Personally, i would recommend an upgrade before going on face cam
Oh I am aware, don't worry, I am working on it! :)
somehow i get a very dark render with hdri`s dunno why
Need to make sure your GI settings are strong enough to illuminate the scene
👍👍👍
Using this tutorial I made my own similar version to this HUD ruclips.net/video/_0E6RcUs-xw/видео.html Hope you like it!
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!!!
i would kill for a teeth like urs)))))
So many people crushin on my teeths! :)
EJ! Come to Brazil give some Master Classes, man!!!!!
