      Compared to a standard range Tesla Model 3 that starts at $30,190 USD, giving you 423km (263mi), better interior build quality more rear-seat legroom, more storage, better door button layout, A clean easy UI, with over the air updates, charging network + performance and safety.

  • @catalicos
    @catalicos 3 года назад +2

    I've had the car for a day and I can confirm most of the things Rory mentioned, but I have to say the materials are not that bad and don't notice them once you start driving.
    The steering wheel has nice leather and the screen looks very good and it's big enough. The OS is not that bad either, it has some hick-ups here and there, but overall it's responsive and works just fine. The buttons on the steering wheel are indeed weird at first, you have to get used to using them. I found they worked pretty well once I got to understand how to use them, but I did happen to try modifying the volume, by swiping and it wouldn't really work smoothly, until I restarted driving later.. so I guess the OS sometimes needs a reboot to fix a problem :)
    Other than that, the driving feel is amazing, the direction is pretty nimble and the suspension does its job very well. I've had the 18" rims and they felt very comfortable.
    The thing I didn't like while driving was the lane keeping assist which is enabled by default, every time you start the car and it doesn't like if you go to the edge of the lane and starts beeping at you. Also, the front collision detection sometimes kicked in, in the city, while going on narrow streets, with cars parked to both sides and I did some pothole maneuvering. Compared to other EVs the regeneration could be better but I think it's made as a fossil-driver-friendly car, to convince people that EVs are just as easy to live with and drive. It regenerates even in D when there is traffic ahead and it slows down on its own. In B mode it regenerates more or rather more aggressively but you rarely need that. Once you break it regenerates anyways. The charging... well that's a different story for another time 😊

    I agree for the volume and temperature knobs. However I like the idea of having only two buttons for the windows : I inadvertently press the rear windows buttons far more often than I do willingly (generally when I want to open the front window but misses the right button). I think that having to explicitly select "rear" is actually an improvement -- I almost never need to open them anyway.
    The thing I dislike much is the missing "one pedal driving". I've been driving for years (even petrol cars) using the brakes as rarely as possible (every time you press them, you're basically throwing useful energy away after all) and "one pedal driving" is really really the **must have** feature of electric cars. Making one without the option is IMO a very bad choice.

    Drum brakes at the back are actually better for EVs. Firstly they’re protected from the environment and won’t rust. Secondly, because EVs use regen braking, you almost never use the brakes, and if you do, it’s always going to put the weight to the front wheels. If it had disk brakes they’d rust and the pads would crack which is incredibly unsafe!

    The comments about "B" mode aren't quite right because it's not about the driver's "taste" as to how much recuperation there is, it's all about efficiency. Too much recuperation means the car slows too much, meaning you have to use precious energy to accelerate back up to speed. The other issue with strong recuperation is skidding on slippery surfaces, which I believe is a problem with Teslas in icy conditions.
    In my experience, for the ID.3, at least, is to leave it in "D" mode all the time and use "B" mode for downhill, only, it works beautifully, then.

    Your right, please VW stop using cheap plastic, in some places, and change userface, and bring back nobs, and have physical buttons such as volume or climate controls and etc.. and if its not broke don't change it please votes for nobs and switch, and change the way switch you have on the steering wheel or doors.

    • @hellcat1988
      @hellcat1988 3 года назад

      @timemachine_194 Well, your story might just be changing when the Tesla factory in Germany is finished and they develop the European only model.

    • @hellcat1988
      @hellcat1988 3 года назад

      @timemachine_194 The argument that the legacy auto makers can, and will, release multiple battery powered cars to overthrow Tesla's market dominance has been made for years now, and they continue to fail at it.
      Yes, the casting machines DO require large investment, but once they are built, they cut costs dramatically. They also have the benefit of being able to change the casting die for different models, bringing that cost savings forward.
      Making a platform to build models on may work for the legacy auto makers, but it's also EXTREMELY limiting to any potential variations that could be built on it. That is why the model 3 and Y were so similar in the beginning, but are now going to be diverging.
      Having the castings for the suspension, while leaving them open to be bolted onto virtually any structural pack design, and, with brackets, hang almost any shape of body panel onto, does somewhat make it a "platform" in a loose sense, but still leaves it open for far more customization and adaptation than the skateboard so many auto makers are using now. It also makes for a FAR stronger, and safer car.
      By simply changing the size of the pack, or sticking with the structural pack for the current cars and changing the front and rear castings to allow for more extreme variations in the suspension design, Tesla are giving themselves the option to make components that will work in several different models of cars. They also give themselves far more possibility for iteration on existing designs.
      If they want something to change on one of the castings, they can just alter the die without having to change the rest of the platform accordingly.
      I've been saying for YEARS now that the first manufacturer to bring a $20k USD car to market with a real world 200 mile range would be able to OWN the one sector of the market that has so far been left almost completely out of the green energy shift. The young/second hand buyer market. Once efficiency and cost to manufacture gets that low, you'll see an exponential growth in EV adoption that would make the current trend look slow by comparison.
      The first company that can jump that hurdle, and be profitable, will have advantages in efficiency beyond even what Tesla has with their current 21-70 cells, and will thus be a market leader. Can the new 46-80 cells get there? I don't know. Is Tesla the first one to seemingly even have a chance at it? Yes.
      They are the market lead in cost, efficiency, range, performance, charging, AND software. They make their own car, rather than buying parts and bolting them together like almost every other manufacturer out there, including VW.
      That is why they can get better specs for nearly the same price. That is why they can iterate so quickly when compared to other manufacturers. That is why they OWN the EV market right now.

    I am glad VW chose hard plastics because it uses less energy, materials and emissions than spongey materials and it can be recycled more easily. I applaud VW for using two window switched (4 per car) instead of 8 window switches because that's a saving of tens of thousands of window switches. If you hold the REAR switch down for a few seconds, one button will control all four windows at once. VW has used Circular Economy thinking in their design, I love it!

    Completely agree on the centre console controls, there should be physical switches. Maybe not that much on the window switches, for a number of reasons:
    - On your average car, the rear window switches aren't used enough.
    - Your average uninformed driver (gets worse with age) will likely use them by mistake when they want to open a front window.
    - People that need to regularly use those buttons are people with kids, closing windows that the little brats decided to open while they're driven through a motorway. Unfortunately, most people with kids won't be able to afford an ID3 until its second or third iteration, and hopefully by then their kids have a master's degree on "when not to open your window", so, there you go, the buttons are pointless.
    - Moreover, it's two more buttons, and two more wires. The weight saving is close to a millionth of the car's weight, so not that significant. The time and cost savings on the assembly line will definitely have a bit more impact as VW goes through thousands of units. In the end, if the saving philosophy does get reflected on the car's cost, I'm in.
    (Other than that, I prefer a knob-free driving experience)
