Another thumbs up for organic neem oil....had aphids on cucumbers and it wiped them out in a few days.I did just one drop of detergent to help it emulsify better. Great video Tony!! There are two types of soaps, “detergents”, which encapsulate dirt/grime to remove it and “surfactants”, which break down cell walls. We want the latter to fight these little devils. Like you said Castile soap made from olive oil and lye solution is a great surfactant, all natural and possibly humanity’s greatest achievement…

Good advice Tony. The reason not to apply soap solution during the day (via a sprayer) is that the water evaporates too quickly so the solution loses its effectiveness. Tony,..which woodchips have you? The ones I buy there are dark and same colour of the ground ..I would prefer light like yours .. Are they from the timber factories ? I always thought could they have toxic varnish if I ask for them in factories.
I've sometimes used Savon Noire, Black Soap for aphids on roses. I'm reluctant to use it very often as I don't know if it, or any of the other remedies you mention are harmful to the beneficial insects, such as the ladybirds and lacewings. Any thoughts on this aspect? I have noticed this year that there have been much greater numbers of greenfly from early season, but a corresponding high number of ladybird and their larvae. I'm hoping nature does the job for me.

Yeah pocket plum is difficult to deal with but neem is quite effective so who ever told you that is on the money, it will need multiple applications though
White fly can be partially. Eradicated by using fly papers...sticky papers that glue the flutes to the paper spiral! Not a total solution but a pretty passive one that helps!
Hi not being rude or trying to cause problems but I have stopped using the fly papers especially the the yellow ones a lot of people use in their greenhouses The reason being is they also kill a lot of good insects like bees ect It never seems logical to me to encourage bees and other helpful insects to pollinate our crops only to kill them with these fly strips ect Pete
Hi Tony, I have a question, I am growing a squash called' Gem squash' in a pot, (I am growing them upright, as I have a very small back yard) the leaves are like pumpkin leaves. I have been using pink sun Neem oil and pink sun horticultural gentle liquid soap, you mix with water. My leaves are still going yellow (I suspect Downy mildew) according to findings on the internet. I also give liquid fertilizer 7-7-7 feed for vegetables and flowers about every two weeks.I live in the UK, but have you experienced this with you Squash, how do you treat it? Suggestions well appreciated. Have a great day .
Hello! Thank you for this channel, and all the time and effort you out into it 😄 I'm an absolute beginner to gardening but am determined to take it up. I have had a real problem on my yellow zucchini with some sort of disease I guess? It's turned some of my leaves on the plant a white/brown filmy dead looking dry dead leaf. I have no idea what is wrong as I'm just starting and would be very grateful for any advice before I use one of these methods and it's not the right thing, before I do something wrong. Do I need to throw out the soil if my plant gets a disease? Also if I use these methods like the soap and oil, what do I do when I want to eat it? Will the soap or oil have an impact on eating it? Or is there a special way to wash the plants?? Thank you so much!
the dry sections is likely to be an underwatering issue. the white fuzzy stuff is called powdery mildew. I have a blog article on it here simplifygardening.com/powdery-mildew/
I use the water hose & sprayer, hand picking, neem oil, soaps, beneficial nematodes & DE in my garden & all containers and pots. I also companion plant very densely with perenial/bi-annual herbs = lots of herbs and edible flowers, everywhere! I keep the garden floor clean, remove all plant matter & dont stack things up anywhere where bugs can hide. I also rake very aggressively and intentionally disturb the garden floor 3 or 4 times a year to expose critters and spray the floor with neem oil and the base and sides of all my raised beds and pots! The herbs and flowers I eat and they attract beneficial bugs and keep them in my garden and they do their job of pretty much eliminating the majority of pests before they damage anything! Another benefit of the flowers and herbs in the garden is the beauty, color, texture and amazing aroma they add, it's a winning combination! I've read alot of testimonials where people say companion planting isnt effective, I disagree! There is absolutely no fault, when introducing food, in the way of herbs and flowers for beneficial insects! These statements are false! Happy Gardening

Love that neemoil
Yes great stuff
Can you please help with pear tree rust thanks, can I save the fruit or is it too late!
The neem would only affect the insects that eat the plant, ladybirds and lacewing lavae dont eat the plants only the aphids
Thanks so much Tony.
Thanks Lorraine, appreciate your comments :)
@@simplifygardening off to rid my rambling roses of the greenfly. Now i know where i was going wrong re soap mix. Thankyou.
@@lorraineg8134 Ah detergent huh Lorraine :)
@@simplifygardening ah ya 😂😂😂
Where did you get that kind of sprayer? Or what is it called?
IU plant therapy
😀
Where did you get the spray attachment for the fizzy juice bottle?
I bought that at a gardening show
Hi Tony
What is the recommended 5 gallon dosage for neem oil.
Do I need to add any soap in the neem oil spray? I added some fairy liquid in it as advised by other videos, it burnt my plant badly last year ...
With the water method, wouldn’t the aphids that are knocked to the ground just crawl back up to the plant again over time?
Thank you Tony have you any ideas on pocket plum .? Our tree has got this I’ve taken all damaged fruit off tried looking for info but not really found anything only been told use neem oil ,any help much appreciated thank you ,great video 👍
Yeah pocket plum is difficult to deal with but neem is quite effective so who ever told you that is on the money, it will need multiple applications though
great info just like the cheap beer think i go for number 4
Perfect Malk :)
Can I use this advice for spider mites on houseplants
Can these be used along with lady bugs? Just release a bag of lady bugs and don’t want to kill them.
Neem would be better as this only affects things that feed on the leaves, ladybirds dont feed on the leaves they eat the aphids
A great idea and I use them in the greenhouse but to place in the garden would be mad witht he size of it
Yes Peter you have a great point there
Hi Tony, I have a question, I am growing a squash called' Gem squash' in a pot, (I am growing them upright, as I have a very small back yard) the leaves are like pumpkin leaves. Have a great day

Hello! Thank you for this channel, and all the time and effort you out into it 😄
I'm an absolute beginner to gardening but am determined to take it up.
Great tips Tony thank you :) That sprayer you had for the pop bottle, is that something you made yourself?
No they are fantastic sprayers and there is a link in the description to buy them on amazon. it will spray in all directions even under leaves
@@simplifygardening Thanks Tony :)
UK Here We Grow I can't see the link for the 2ltr pop bottle sprayer
What ratio of neem oil do you use to water?
Do you spray off soap solution after so many hours?
No
Do you need to rinse off soap solution after a few hours?
No leave it on
I saw you use a soda bottle for spraying. Do you have a video on all of your different DIY spraying gadgets?
There is one planned for later in Spring :)
Are all 5 methods organic, safe to eat? And if neem oil makes the plants bitter for the pests, wont it make our food too bitter for us too?
All organic and needs bitterness can be removed by washing
Is killing the only option
Kim I couldnt agree more, Companion planting does work if do it right. from the looks of it your nailing it :)
Can you do about hydroponic garden?
I just finished a video of an autopot system as I am using it for my chillies this year should be out next week stay tuned
