There is only one word for this powerful and engrossing work: masterpiece. I owned an English language version growing up in the 1950s. When I was angry about something, the tenor's outburst "Smite them with destruction, Lord, and slay them" got quite a workout on the turntable.
Aleluya
Excellent soloist. Overall a very solid performance of a work that's deceptively tricky for all involved to get right. The choir are pretty well drilled and together, maybe a slight tendancy for a few of the men's voices to become prominent here and there. But nothing fatal. Enjoyed this very much.
The Frankfurter Radio Symphony version on youtube is a much much better rendition of this piece of music, check that out. Here the choir was extremely poor, falling apart completely on the last third.
