Between 29 and 30 April 2012, both KiKA and sixx ceased broadcasting in analogue on Astra 19.2°E. Due to technical limitations of analogue satellite TV, KiKA (aka Der Kinderkanal) (and formerly German version of the Nickelodeon channel, transponder 49) was forced to timeshare with 5 different channels due to lack of bandwidth. This include Arte, a European public service channel dedicated to culture (1997-2003, where it ceased to timeshare with KiKA/Der Kinderkanal) and other channels including sixx, a German television channel showing mostly American television series until they ceased broadcasting. sixx started broadcasting on 7 May 2010 (on digital satellite and cable (analogue/digital)) and it was the last new channel broadcasting in analogue on the Astra satellite due to the growth of digital television alongside greater choice compared to analogue satellite and the reduced need for channels to timeshare due to bandwidth constraints. The analogue satellite transmissions (broadcasting on Astra 19.2°E) were switched off on Monday 30 April 2012, being the last country in Europe to switch off the analogue satellite transmissions. Sixx replaced 9Live on 9 August 2011, but on analogue cable and digital satellite only, as Sixx was already airing on digital cable and 9Live moved to digital satellite on 1 January 2011, so Sixx timeshared with KiKA until they ceased analogue satellite broadcasting.
