When this song was at its height, my sister was 19 years old, dying from cancer. I was 17, and left school to spend a dreary winter with her in a Chicago hospital where they were doing experimental chemo. Late night, we'd order a pizza to be delivered to the ER in the basement, because nobody was allowed on the 8th floor cancer ward that late. We'd ride the elevator down and back, harmonizing this song together. She died too soon after that. I'm in my 70s now, but when I hear this song, I'm 17, in an elevator with great acoustics, holding a pizza, and singing my heart out with my best friend.

I agree with you 127%. Long ago (my daughter is 42 now) Westside Don Williams in St Augustine when she was a baby. After he said he came over and touched my then baby girl and said she was beautiful. At 36 my beautiful baby girl was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Now 6 years later not only do I have a miracle in my daughter's remission but I have a 2 year old granddaughter and a 2-month-old granddaughter. Don Williams was right - she is beautiful

My mom loves this song so much and I think she’s right ❤
Married to the same woman for over fifty years, never in trouble with the law, a stoner or drunk, Don is almost unique in the music business. I've followed him since his days with the Pozo Seco Singers in the 60s. Not only do I love his music, I admire the MAN. We have our Willie's and Possum's, and we love their music too. But Don brings a LOT to the table. He has written wonderful lyrics, and his voice has soothed millions. Gotta love this guy.

When someone asks me "what music do you like?" and I say "I am very fond of Don Williams", I feel proud of Don because of his good reputation as one of the best singers in the world and as a good man. Other singers are just an embarrassment to even be associated with as a fan, if you know what I mean. "Oh, him(!)" What I like about Don is his humility personally and I have been to five of Don's fantastic concerts. Lovely guy with a God-given voice and calming relaxing songs. Agape. Andrew.

Surprisingly i discovered this masterpiece this year, 2 weeks ago (Jan 2024), while driving through the Highway from my hometown to Shillong, where i settled for my studies, crossing two states. This song is written about a man on Death Row.. who starts thinking about how his Mama tried to raise him right? But he chose to go the other path. Both Country Giants Johnny and Merle lived with and had wrestled with drugs alcohol and one with "infidelity. "Sing me Back Home" to those Good Old Days..
Merle had multiple wives and children by different women.
Both Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard had their come to "Jesus moments" before they died.. and were thankful that God is the God of second chances. It's called God's grace, not because of our Good works, but His free gift to those who repent and turn to Jesus.

This song, along with Margaritaville by Jimmy Buffet, got me through some seriously dark times in my life. The anxiety and pressures I was going through and just listening to them songs dragged me by the scruff of my neck through it all - they just helped keep me reminding that the end of the day was always in sight and I will make it through the next one. I cannot stop listening to this. I've always really liked Merle's version--he wrote it, after all, and it is Merle's song. However, the first time I heard Don's version, I was stunned. This is beautiful, heartbreaking, perfect. I never thought anyone could outdo Merle, but Don Williams has. WOW!
