- The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are almost solely responsible for the term "ninja" becoming a household name. But after thirty years of TV shows, movies, and merchandise, how "ninja" are they REALLY? And what will it mean for the new series, "Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles"?

My magnum opus of Which Ninja. I loved making this almost 20 minute episode, but LORDY am I exhausted. A HUGE thanks to those that came out to the research stream on Twitch! Without you, this would have been a very different video! Eyeballing Kirby and Fortnite for future videos.

Agreed
I'm surprised you didn't go into how their 'default' weapons are designed to psychologically fight against their flaws. Leonardo is always hesitant to put his brothers in danger as their leader so Master Splinter gave him Ninjaken, which (while a Hollywood weapon) were designed for quick, decisive strikes. Raphael is obsessed with proving he's the strongest so he was given the Sai, a disarming blunt weapon meant for defense and not killing. Michelangelo is scatter-brained and lazy so he was given the most complicated (another Hollywood weapon) Nunchaku because it would force him to focus in order to use them effectively, and Donatello with his talents using machines and computers was given the most low-tech weapon possible to teach him not to rely on superior arms.
Michelangelo and Raphael, I knew about, but didn't think about Leonardo and Donatello's weapon choices.
I always figured Raph chose the sai's as a way to one up Leo as sai's would be the perfect weapon to counter swords.
I always thought the Sai had more to do with Raph's temper than his ego but when you put it like that it does point to how often Raphael's temper is a product of his ego rather than his ultimate flaw.
HowDo ILogin dang, never thought of that, but it makes complete sense
I agree with everything you said except the nunchaku being a Hollywood weapon. It was a farming tool that people used as a weapon. Hollywood didn’t create nunchucks lol
In Rise of the TMNT Raph is an alligator snapping turtle, Leo is a red eared slider, Donnie is a soft shelled turtle and Mikey is a box turtle.
@Waffie The Dweeb can't tell if you're joking about that.
Is that why Mikey is the only one that can hide in his shell?
@@alexmeza9080 most likely.
I love box turtles, and i love Mikey’s character, it’s a good mix, but the show in my opinion was really lackluster. It was refreshing from the 3d 2012 tmnt show, but it wasn’t a good upgrade. Instead of balancing the humor and action, the put the action on the side, and put humor in the spotlight, which they devolved leo into the wisecracking guy in the group, and raph into the “if we work as a team we can do this” person. It was weird with raph being the leader anyway
I think the first episode was really the only one i liked in the show, besides the final showdown with shredder
To me the most ninja thing is in the first season of the nick show, where Splinter teaches then that they should NOT look for a fair fight, they should aim to have as much advantage as they can to ensure the victory.
Yep that was an awesome episode.
Another one that Splinter said that the most important thing for Ninja to do is make it home. AKA don't get caught and survive.
Also, in the 2003 version of TMNT, there is a "lost season" known as The Ninja Tribunal and the turtles used other weapons like a naginata, a kusarigama, etc.
Been trying to find the full season for years at this point
Actually, Banrai isn't a kusarigama. It's a kamanunchaku. And Byakko isn't a naginata, but in fact a moon spear. Gunshin isn't a naginata either; it's closer to a traditional katana, though the size might put it all the way up to odachi.
@@black97_0 Did you ever find what you were looking for?
Why is it a lost season? I remember they aired that normally in my country :o
@@Kermodeii my failure to locate it still haunts me
The 2003 TMNT holds a seriously high place in my heart. It started my interest in ninja and Japan.
Same with me. It's the reason why I read the Dragon Ball z manga, watch the show and watch Naruto.
I love how it went all out, then going to space, feudal Japan, time travel, and even cyberspace while still being true to there ninja roots and how they operate
That was the show that got me into the fandom :) and consequently it also was the show that made me compare every ninja turtle series I've watched. :/
For me it the first Tmnt series i ever watch
i love that version the most im binge watching it again
Fun Fact:
In the 87 series, Michelangelo and Raphael's personalities were nearly identical
it was the 1990 movie that solidified Raph as being impuslive and easily angered.
Also, Donatello's name was originally going to be Bernini
so Raphael and Michelangelo were both comedic? what other changes from the original were made?

However Splinter and Shredder did

@@joelfigueredo957 in the first episode Leonardo faces off against Raphael and says “Onegai Shimasu”
So that "Act without thinking" thing...
"Is this Ultra Instinct?!"
May have been the inspiration?...
@@darylewalker6862 The whole concept of the mental state of Mushin no Shin (Mind without mind) is something that has actually existed for quite some time. It's apparent association with Chinese Daoism where it is referred to as Wuxin (literally "no mind") further illustrates just how old this concept is.
And speaking of the Sakki Test Splinter actually uses it in a episode TMNT-2012 basically in the episode that later sees the turtles team-up with Dogpound, and Fish-Face against to take on Baxter Stockman, Splinter early on in the episode has the turtles take it in order to teach them how to sense an enemy's intentions after they barely get away with their lives due to getting ambushed by Dogpound, and Fish-Face and they pass with the exception of Raph who fails because his hot-headed arrogance leads him to believe that learning how to sense a enemy's intent is not needed since he "knows what the enemy's intent is". exemplified by this dialogue between Raph and Splinter.
Raph: "This is pointless I already know my enemy's intent it's to take me down."
Splinter: "You may know the enemy's intentions Raphael but do you know when the enemy will actually strike."
I heard that Mikey's new mystery "Bladed yo-yo" thing is apparently called a Kusari-Fundo, not the Manriki gusari as you said. Personally, I really like Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the creators said they wanted to prioritize not retreading the same old ground again as its predecessors, and I for one feel the changes work. I really like how the Mutagenic ooze isn't sci-fi in nature but rather it's like yokai blood or something this time, and they're kind of coded like immigrants.
It’s like a modern take on the 1987 cartoon.
They’re chain weapons at least.
That's one thing that is a little sad nowadays. Ninja were basically very resourceful fighters that took what they had and used it with deadly efficiency. We don't have that kind of creativity nowadays. Also, part of me thinks the "Nine Cuts" could have a strong placebo effect. Basically believing that something will protect you and work, often has its own effects. Regardless, I still think it is a form of healing being it works on a psychological level.
Also, poison is a rather unusual weapon in that it uses the body's natural reaction to fear and danger against itself. The adrenaline response associated with "fight or flight" increases heart rate, and dilates the blood vessels, which would cause a bloodborne toxin to circulate faster. By utilizing a meditative technique such as the Nine Cuts, it could conceivably counter the effects of adrenaline, allowing time for a ninja to escape and seek longer-term medical treatment or means of self-medication.
I actually like that the 2012 turtles are different from each other. Not just their body types and color, but how each of them makes unique expressions or uses slightly different vocabulary (and not just one or two catchphrases). Maybe it's not that great from a ninja perspective but definitely awesome from a character perspective. And the animation isn't that bad once you get used to that.
They've always had different personalities, even back in the comics when they looked the same you could tell who was talking without referencing their weapons, I always had a theory that each member of the family was based off a different borrough.
Donatello from Queens
Michaelangello from the Bronx
Raphael from Brooklyn
Leonardo from Staten Island
Splinter from Manhattan
The theory has holes because it's based on generalisation but considering Eastman and Laird apparently didn't actually visit NYC until the second or third year of the TMNT comic maybe general was the sum of their knowledge of the area.
That's also what made them so loveable and fun to watch. Even as babies, you could identify who is who
"and though things get a little more sci fi"
TMNT has ALWAYS been very sci fi. Issue #4 and #5 of the original comics have the turtles teleported out into space because they were searching for Splinter who had been kidnapped by aliens (unbeknownst to the turtles).
When I actual sat down and read tmnt comics for the first time that was one thing that shocked me the most. Then spent around 4 issue in a different galaxy fighting aliens. This idea actual really works and wish would be explore more.
And in context of Ninjas. Sci-fi works with ninjas because they are all about using the latest and greatest technology they could get their hands on, if they need to hand make it then that’s what they will do. So seeing ninjas in space isn’t something I am shocked at.
Peter laird worked on the 2003 series and from what i heard he prefers tmnt in the sci fi route wheras kevin eastman prefered the more realism route
the new turtles are actually really well thought out. i get from a first look perspective, they may seem really weird and bad looking, but it’s really a prequel before everything truly happens. leo is young and reckless, not really fit for a leader as he would like to, “enjoy being a teenager.” raph is only the leader because he’s the oldest, splinter probably wanted someone mature to watch over the other three and thought, “hey, they’re big brother can do that.”
I won't say wich turtles are best but 2003's version of shredder was absolutely the best when it comes to appearance, personality and ruthlessness.
And if you're needing an example of 03 shredders cruelty and ruthlessness, look at what he did to Baxter stockman.
I agree with you on ruthlessness and the rest, but I don’t know how I felt about him being an alien. 2003 was really the first series that I actually got into, so I don’t know much about the Shredder from the original cartoon besides what I’ve heard (and it is not flattering). Because of that, 2012 was my favorite Shredder, mostly because he seemed more real. I could picture a person doing all that.
Hate to say it but the fact he's a alien takes it away because shredder is supposed to human which is why he's scary
2012 Shredder was far more ruthless
@@e-scorts7485
Lmao no nigga, 2012 was way too merciful. He spared Rhazar and Fishface when they failed him *numerous* times, the most ruthless things he has done are kill Tang When in a fit of rage, mutate 3 people and kill Splinter. 2003 Shredder killed Hamato Yoshi just because and committed mass genocide for his own profit. And that time he destroyed planet by killing Splinter is still less ruthless than galactic genocide...

2000s is my favourite. It had one of the most intimidating Shredder. Remember one of the earliest episodes Shredder just straight up cuts out a subordinate's eye for his failure.
Then i cut his hand and legs, then i cut his head and i put his brain i jar and electroshocked it! That what idid to Baxter Stockman for his failure and his betrayal!

You got to wonder how he had so many followers with that kind of attitude though.
Their obviously talking about the 2003 version otherwise they would have said 2010’s
I mean, if we wanna be more technical, the 2003 adaptation did have one episode where the turtles had to use each others' weapons, although that had a different implication, since that was meant to confuse the enemy rather than just be adept at multiple weapons.
But still, I'm always one to defend the 2003 adaptation XD
2003 was near when I was born, so 2003 turtles had some reruns still going!
If I remember correctly, the 2012 version of the turtles actually had that too. Splinter hat them use each other's weapons because they were lacking in teamwork and we're becoming too comfortable with their weapons.
I watched the whole series of Rise of the TMNT, they do show some good references to Japan's culture, they did show some good references about ninjas too. As you said, don't just the appearance, so if it's not too much trouble, can you do a video about Rise?

Same here as I thought they looked completely stupid in that art style. One night I turned on my Xbox 360 and noticed that they were showing one or two episodes for free. “What the hell” I thought, and decided to give ‘em a watch to see just how bad this series was.
I ended up buying all the DVDs of the show that were available at that time soon after.
Man, we really slept on rise of the tmnt. That show was incredible
So... what happened to IDW's TMNT? It wasn't mentioned once, and is probably by far the most ninja of them all. It even includes the detailed history of how ninjas came to exist historically!
They *did* say “the more well known iterations”. Perhaps IDW’s TMNT wasn’t that well known at the time.
Just a quick reminder to some people. This video is looking at the Turtles ninja skills from a cultural perspective to see if the Turtles could be considered actual ninja. So if Gaijin says something negative about how Turtles act in the original cartoon or in one of your favorite TMNT cartoons, remember that he is looking at their ninja ways from a cultural perspective. I'm sure he love these cartoons and the Turtles just as much as we do.

This was an interesting episode. I'll admit, I got chills when Leo and Splinter were chanting the mantras. It's a well done scene.
Michel Bays Turtles maybe better ninjas than the 80s turtles, but atleast Master Splinter in the 80s didnt learn ninjutsu from just a random book.
I appreciate your attempt at cannon, but there's actually very little, true to history, ninjutsu being practiced in the 1984 version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In fact, the show's creator, Kevin Eastman, admitted that CBS changed nearly everything from the comic book of the same name, in order to sell more toys. Nostalgia makes a lousy filter when determining accuracy, but it was still a good show.
Actually, learning from books tended to be how ninjas kept their knowledge going. They did dangerous work after all. Having access to the knowledge, even without the hand-on experience of teacher, was one of the ways they survived. Even today books hold the most knowledge of ninja skills rather than masters since it's a dying art in terms of usage. Historians use that knowledge now while practitioners are trying to keep the history of it all alive.
So not as out there as you'd think in terms of modern usage which Michael Bay's Turtles keep strongly in mind.
I remember coming home from school and sitting down to watch the 2003 TMNT show. Best memories of the TMNT ever.
With injustice 2 releasing the turtles, I assumed something like this would come up, and I love it!
Now we have to wait for SugarPunch Design Works to look at their animations.
Raptorus77 why are you everywhere I go?
Excellent video, especially as someone who got introduced with the 2003 series, thinks the 80's series overrated as hell and the Nickelodeon series is underrated as hell.
Yeah as TMNT 2012 Nickelodeon, a CG animated series that aired on Nickelodeon. The most Animesque take yet, full of Manga Effects and other Japanese visual humor. It's somewhat Younger and Hipper - the Turtles act more like adolescents and several human characters have been aged down - but it still has dark moments. Narratively, the series draws heavily from the '87 cartoon and original live-action movies, but with long-running story arcs and other story elements inspired by other continuities.
The 2012 TMNT will always be my favorite. I love how accurate it is to real ninja history, and how perfectly it mixes comedy and action with a serious undertone.

This is why I consider the 2012 version the best. It has all of the entertainment and tropes that clearly demonstrated a love for the '80s classic, while at the same time improving on it, including elements from other incarnations of the show, and just telling a good story with lots of culture.
Pretty much that. It is BY turtles fans, FOR turtles fans. The things that they do in that whole series, whether subtle or grand, have tremendous foundations in the entire franchise.

This was so cool! And it's really opened my eyes about the 2012 series. Maybe I should go back and check it out. The '87 series may not be the best, but many would say it's still better than Next Mutation. Speaking of which, maybe you could do an episode on Venus and debunk her inconsistent whatevers.
But my greatest TMNT love will always be for the 2003 series. It's the one I grew up with, and it's, in my opinion, one of the greatest shows to come out of the franchise. Yeah, _Fast Forward_ was kinda goofy, but I still enjoyed it. And poor _Back to the Sewer_ never got a chance, even though I loved its addition. At least we got the amazing _TMNT Forever_ movie.
The Library I grew up with and loved the '03 version too. But I can tell you without any hesitation, 2012 is better.
I grew up with both the '87 and '03 versions, and 2012 definitely the best so far.
I grew up with the 87 turtles and loved the 2012 series. The 03 series started good but quickly got really boring when the Tricaratons showed up. I probably would have seen the original TMNT comics when I was little but my cousin said it was for adults and not for kids.
@InoMercy & @Knight41b - How's the Shredder in the 2012 series? He was one of my favorite things about the '03 series.
2012 Shredder is probably the best written version of the character I've seen. (I still haven't read the comics, bare that in mind) He can be blinded by his lust for revenge, but for the most part his plans all make sense and he's even scored a few wins on the turtles. He's also easily the strongest version (Check out the Death Battle between him and Silver Samurai, most of his more impressive feats come from the 2012 version) he was able to fend off eight mutants at once by himself. and took down multiple Tricaratons solo.
But, in my opinion, the best part of Shredder's character is why he's evil. In most versions, Shredder is evil just for the sake of being evil. But the 2012 version's evil acts all stem from one major character flaw: Oroku Saki never takes responsibility for his own actions. Despite how much pain and suffering he's caused those around him, even to those he claims to care about more than anything, he never sees himself as the bad guy. It's amazingly twisted and fascinating to see what lengths, even going into outright delusion, to avoid the simple fact that most of the misfortune in Shredder's life is his own doing.
In the 2012 version of TMNT, April is trained to be a Kunoichi.
She got trained as a ninja by Splinter in the 2003 version as well
If you accept the Archie Comics run of the Ninja Turtles, later comics and a short spin off comic show April even then being trained by Splinter.
Same goes in the 2019 version
@@randomgamer625 Correct. Because in the IDW comics aka the current ones along with getting trained as a Kunoichi she becomes the 2nd in command of Leo's ninja clan after him and Splinter had a falling-out after Splinter took over the Foot Clan and Donnie finally convinced Leo to pick a 2nd in command.

Gaijin , I have a question for you. Would you consider Daredevil a ninja ?
Icarus Deoliviera He is very ninja when you break down his background and history in comics.
No. He is a master of martial arts and skilled in stealth, but he does not practice ninjutsu.
DoctorLazers ninjutsu is about stealth, unconventional combat, and espionage, which he has learned from his master Stick, who leader of The Chaste ninja group tasked with defeating The Hand. The 2003 TMNT series is very underrated.
Basically, all TMNT serieses beside the '87 version is underrated. Key word: SERIES
Fun Fact about 2012 TMNT: Executive Producer Joshua Sternin was a student at the only Bujutsu schools in the US. The show’s creators and crew had weekly “ninja combat” classes. They learned how to hold a weapon, dojo etiquette, and even learned a few moves. I got this from the Art of Nickelodeon’s(2012) TMNT.
13:01 Yeah, one of those "sensitive powders" being GROUND GLASS! THEY BLINDED PEOPLE WITH EGGS FULL OF POWDERED GLASS!!
Holy Shinx! WTF was wrong with people back then? That could SHRED someone's eye!
@@Valhalla05 That's the point. For ninjas, as long as it works for them to escape or distract, it's good enough for them.
Makes me wonder if the “Viper Maneuver” that Master Splinter showed Leonardo in season 4 or 5 of the 87 Ninja Turtles is a real ninja move.
FUNFACT: Shuriken and kunai were samurai weapons. Because in order to carry them you did need a wooden case and that was against the light as feather philosophy. Doesn't mean Shinobi didn't get trained to throwing them, after all, EVERYTHING is a weapon and thus one must be trained to use 'em. That and shuriken and kunai DID require weapons-grade iron and craftmanship, the first being one helluva scarce resource and the latter drawing way too much attention. Those smiths were frick'n rockstars.
Funnily enough, Mike throws a bola and calls it manriki-gusari.. Then again that weapon is pretty much chain with both ends having blades or/and weights. I think it's even on the name.
In defense to cartoons, Splinter only learnt about the mindset and martial art parts of ninjas. Don't really remember which version the original cartoon shot, but Splinter was either accessing memories of time being a pet rat and seeing his owner either practice punching or swinging weapon or meditating... Or when he was newly mutagenized.. he came across a PAMPHLET about ninjutsu and decided to raise the turtles among the few lines in there.. So take your poison there xD
From what I remember, The original cartoon in the 80s Splinter was Hamato Yoshi. He was a human who lived in Japan and was learning ninjutsu. When he was disgraced for not bowing down to a highlevel Master when he came to visit his Masters dojo (an envious rival had stabbed his Gi to the floor making it impossible for him to bow, so when Splinter removed the knife it made it look like he was threatening the Master with a weapon) he moved to America and was poor so he lived like a homeless person eventually taking refuge in the sewers. When he found the turtles he took care of them. The mutagen turned the turtles into human because of their long-term exposure to Splinter/Hamato Yoshi and Splinter turned into a rat because of the long term exposure to the sewer rats. So yeah its weird how the 80s cartoon basically made Hamato Yoshi and Splinter the same person. To my knowledge its the only time thats been done.
Orwell in 1984: "Big Brother is watching you."
Me: "In 1984 Ninja Turtles were wachting you."
The 2012 iteration is, by far, my favorite, mostly due to the real Ninjutsu references. The turtles feel relatable and like they're actually learning every day. It is a shame I never finished watching it. I stopped at a moment when they had to flee the city and took refuge in a forest where a Mutagen swamp monster and some Illuminati - yes, literally, the robes are covered with the eye - frogs or something were living.
Don't forget that Donatello made their weapons and gadgets from scraps and stolen tech from the enemy. And as you said in earlier videos and this video, ninjas weren't rich. That and it's not like they'll be able to walk into a store without freaking everyone out
"First rule of being a ninja, Do no harm... Unless you have to do harm, then do *Lots* of harm"
The 2012 version of the teenage mutant ninja turtles series is probably my favorite version of the story
I'd love to know what Gaijin thinks of the movie "Ninja Assassin". I thought it was a pretty good action movie, but I'm curious as to what he would think of it.
It used many examples of ninja mythology. Some even shown here in this video. But the movie exaggerated them to a mystical or fantasy level. To kind of show how a ninjas enemies saw ninjas. But again, on an exaggerated level.
I love the old ninja turtels from the 2007 move
I would /love/ to see the ROTTMMT version get another Which Ninja rundown, given it's gotten a whole /movie/ now.
the Sonic Boom TV show is actually very good....(it honestly should just ONLY been a TV show....)
It was hit and miss. When it worked it worked but when it failed...BOY did it fail
It's humor isn't the sort I'd acociate with sonic.
Davanthall The series was solely made to promote the game, but instead ended up being better than the game itself. True irony.
Season 1 was meh since it was a generic kid’s cartoon, but season 2 was like ‘ya know what, let’s become satirical and self-aware,’ and then proceeded to be amazing.
ok i will fight you on that statement, Archie's Sonic Boom is freaking fantastic!
the Fire & Ice game was inofensive enough
The 3DS games isn't that bad either. I mean, it was pretty average (aka worse than the previous portable installments), but still an ok game, worthy of buying after a price drop. Can't really say the same for the main console versions.
Oh good, I thought I was the only one who thought the 80’s TMNT were disgrace as ninjas.
Also people don’t seem to pay enough attention to the “rise” that is in the title. I predict that this show is either going to be a coming-of-age as ninjas OR they are gonna go in a route that makes them even worse ninjas by becoming famous in New York.
Joo-Hwan Jun There was nothing ninja about the 1980s TMNT
Ted Michel Oh good! I was not alone in that sentiment!
"Rise of the Turtles" was the first season of the 2012 series when Nickelodeon first acquired the rights.
It's not the weapons I don't like about rise of the ninja turtles I hate it's their design, hell I didn't even notice they were using other weapons until it was pointed out in this video
For me, it was Raphael being the leader instead of Leonardo that turned me off. :P
@@sonicmario64 that also turns me off, but he was meant to originally be the leader so I'll cut them some slack there
Ashley Drury they were ALL Mikey -_-
@@dejaypage1575 just because they're teenagers doesn't make them mikey.
I believe I saw Splinter say “moshi moshi” (I forget how to spell it) when answering the phone. If I remember from your videos that’s a protection against a shapeshifting yoki right?
You're right, apparently ghosts in Japan can only say "moshi" once.
I saw the new turtles and didn't get mad over the weapons no I was mad over the fact that Ralph is supposed to be the bad boy that doesn't take orders the lone wolf. Now they take the loan wolf and says sure let's make him the leader. That is what made me mad.
Yeah, same. Well, I'm not mad, but it feels completely off to make him the leader given how he is the emotional one that's prone to make rash decisions because he has trouble focusing and relaxing. He and Mikey are like the wild cards of the group and are supposed to contrast with Leo and Donny. Leo and Donnie are more level-headed and focused, whereas the other two aren't.
Other changes, I guess I wouldn't have much of an issue with...but Leonardo not being the leader will take A LOT of getting used to if I were to watch this series.
Someone should make an animated show about the adventures of Loan Wolf and Tax Bear.
Raph being leader still feels wrong to me...but didn't think much about the tonfa. MIkey had tonfa in the Next Mutation as opposed to nunchuck. Oh for the 2012 show, I loved the kusarigama that Mikey had. It worked for him and totally forgot about him using the other weawpon in the 87 show in the early eps.
Anyway, the turtles in the 87 show seemed to only go out at night, fewer people. They also seemed to stay underground unless something drew them to the surface. Also, even though April came up with the trench coat thing, they did use them and those ugly masks a lot, unless my memory is faulty. I hated how they overexaggerated that in the 2012 show with the 87 set of turtles. They didn't generally just run out in the open unless the plot called for it (like the first episode with them stepping out, meeting April or granny with a gun lol). They seemed to come out more during the day once they were becoming known.
Looking back, though, they really weren't very stealthy. The Turtle Blimp stuck out like a sore thumb...but I blame Donatello's ego for the blimp.
ssjup81 you think the 2012 over exaggerated the 1987 turtles then wait until you see turtles forever in the 2003 era.
I will say tho, that the 2003 tmnt show was pretty close to the comics compared to all the other iterations
4:42 or 5:15 in retrospect, it's honestly _so EASY_ for them pulling that trick off, all they have to do is to take of their mask and Anything that has their colors.
Nostalgia aside, TMNT 2012 is the best thing to come from the franchise period
SixteenTheAnimator 2k3
I agree I grew up with TMNT but I think 2012 was the best series I hate that its done :(
The IDW comics are also in contention. Give them a read, they're pretty great.
Well except that whole Mad Max thing.
Agreed. 2k3 were my Turtles but 2012 expanded and improved from it's predecessors. I especially loved how they went deeper in the ninja history.
Who else can't help but sing along with that theme song?
"I will now teach you the Kuji-ini. Nine hand signs. Observe..."
"Uh, Master Splinter? We only have three fingers."
I just noticed this hasn’t been mentioned but in the same episode in the 2012 where they swap weapons they end up having them getting their weapons taken so they use random warehouse items as makeshift weapons so again ANYTHING can be a weapon to a true ninja master
I love Donatello's relationship with Casey in the first movie. Trading insults back and forth in alphabetical order while fixing a car. Beautiful.
You misspoke when you said that Leonardo had Katanas. Leo has never had katanas in any iteration. He's had ninjaken (which as far as I know are a fictional weapon with no historic basis). The difference is that Katana are curved whereas ninjaken are straight... and a little shorter I think.
Indeed, the only reason why they look "So big" is because the turtles are shorter than your average human.
So why weren't Ninjaken actually a thing?
The closest blade that I've seen that resembles the ninjaken is the kodachi, which was a smaller version of the tachi.
@@JaelinBezel
Ninjaken and ninjato were invented for low resolution video games.
@@germanvisitor2 yeah but I mean why weren't they actually real, historically?
I like the occasional Ninja running in the background near the top.
2012 Mikey had unlocked Ultra Instinct.
AAAAAAAAAAAAA! A Kamen Rider reference! **fan-girl screams**
Where?
MetalSonicMkIV kamen rider faiz in his accel form
Seriously where is it? I can’t find it. And I’ve watched this vid ten times looking for it. It’s driving me nuts!
TopHatCat he used the hurricanger yellow bunshin jutsu picture a few times now.i wonder when will they do the ninja sentai's (kakuranger, hurricanger, ninninger)
I Played Kamen Rider Once
Nah. 2003 is still the best idoration.
Resil The Fallen I cant agree more.
Resil The Fallen Have you watch the 2012 version? I was a diehard for '03, but after going a few seasons deep on 2012, it outpaced '03 by a good margin.
I agree. I felt like the 2012 series was trying to combine the 2003/comic book vibe with the 1987 cartoony vibe... That's one thing that kinda bugged me a bit.
MrJechgo Heaven forbid a cartoon be... cartoony.
What is an "idoration"??
Okay, just a heads up, I love your historical videos I've seen so far, but at 6:35 I completely lost it, I have read that comic when it was a color remaster, and the panel shown right after, I was flooded with nostalgia... Keep up the good work Gaijin!
It's not like he can openly say anything bad about black April.
Showbiz really hates red heads for some reason XD
Hey can you please do a video on Hidden Phantom from MegaMan Zero and ZX.
Oh my god YES!
YES Sarnaq is one of my favorite characters from ZX Advent and Phantom was always really awesome too!
There's not much to work with in regards to Phantom, though.
KuroNoTenno it'll be a short one like shadow man but with more info.
To be fair, there is work to do on both, merged in a single episode.
In addition, the concept for Phantom aniaml form may be interesting, as well as the difference between model P et Px in the ZX serie.
I am definitely enjoying these segments of Which Ninja episodes. Learning about their history and such is quite fascinating.
I was upset when the 2018 cartoon was announced, but that was mostly because they announced it after the 2012 ended. I gave it a few years and the 2018 cartoon grew on me.
Tonfa’s are defense weapons
Rafe is an attack turtle
Your either got at attacking and defending or your not if you can't do both it will be exploited easily.
Sai are meant to be more defense focused too.
Yeah, sai are meant mostly for defense. But Raph having sai, a defense weapon, despite being an attacker type, was supposed to make him have to think more in battles and not be too hasty or impulsive or do something too violent that he might regret. So I don’t think tonfas are really that inappropriate. Plus, they’re often used as training weapons for a student to work up to using sai.
defense weapons lol
They are mainly used for defense, against swords. They’re shaped to catch swords as your opponent strikes and disarm them. And, yes, you very well can stab someone with them easily, but they’re not primarily for that. That’s why they’re so short. And shorter blades are trickier to fight with, because you have to get up close to do damage. Another good fit for Raphael- he’s an up-close fighter, but it still helps him remember to use his head. And tonfas are close-range too.
I want to share with you an experience I had. I was getting a glass from a high cupboard and had bump another glass tipping it over on its side. I assumed I wasn't going to roll out of the cupboard after checking that it was in no danger of falling out and had gone back to purring myself a glass of water. Just as I was about to pure I heard a faint sound coming from my left side and before I know anything I had caught the glass out of mid air. Mind you I'm also blind in my left eye so had no way of seeing it fall. Could this be an example of Mushin? Or was I just lucky to have not broken a glass haha.
Great video as all ways Gaijin Goombah.
Yea it's kinda like that.
I had a similar thing except a dodgeball when I was turned away
The comics and producers of the comics and shows also passed off kubudo/kobujutsu weapons as shinobi weapons. Sai, tonfa and nunchaku are not ninjutsu weapons. They were farm tools from Okinawa that were used when Samurai annexed Okinawa and banned weapons. Farmers and commoners developed the farm tools as weapons.
Not surprising as Hollywood has used martial arts such as Karate and tae kwon do and non Shinobi weapons as aspects of ninjutsu so it's not surprising.
One film was made by folks who studied Bujinkan. Not sure if it's name nor have I seen it, but it would be nice to see techniques from a Ninjutsu Ryu in a film.
Ninja gets caught by guard:
"Pocket E G G!"
When he said series at the being of the video Siri went off on my iPad I’m not if it was just a coincidence but it was wierd
Wow. This is a great video. This gives me a new look at the different versions of TMNT. Question though. Giving their TV history from being comical to more ninja like, do you think they were limited early on as to what they could portray in regards to "Ninja?" I always thought that ninjas was like a secret society of some sort. There are only certain things that's available to the public. For instance, the 9 Cuts looks like it could be a secrete maneuver that couldn't be shared back in the 80's. Just trying to give reason for the changes through out the years. 😊
Fun fact: They had to name the 1987 series "Teenage Mutant *HERO* Turtles" in germany for one thing or another.
Unintentionally fitting, considering how not ninja they apparently are there :D
When they release tmnt To Europe they change ninja to Hero Apparently using the word ninja in kid shows is considered dark in a lot of European countries.
I thought of something. Agent 47 is a ninja
He doesn't kill all the people against him, only specific targets
He does have a master or some sort of a clan
He wears disguises
He hides the body
He uses a range of weapon
He has a ninja costume
Nobody knows his real name
Nobody in the game has that much info on him
He is physically and mentally trained
He can use poisons well
He is literally a ninja hitman
So, I was working on a project and needed the names of a few Shinobi techniques, and it turns out that they were all in this video, thanks Goomba, you've greatly aided my mini project
