I went to a clinic with Marty right after he left Megadeth, I was about 15 at the time. They had a Q&A section afterwards and I got in line and asked him "how do you come up with ideas? I find myself doing the same lame stuff over and over and I feel like I'm just not good enough". I'll never forget his reaction, he leaned back from the counter and put his hands on his head and his eyebrows perked up and he goes "Dude me too!!!!!". We had a conversation about recording yourself with a tape deck so if you have a random moment of genuis you can go back and re-learn it.....but just that moment of realizing my hero was a human being and not some sort of perfect robot god was life changing for me.

Even the way he was picking, finger picking, and even flicking his finger to grab notes a certain way, combined with the angle of approach using his wrist, really helped capture his explanation here. It almost seemed a bit over exaggerate, but only because he wanted the camera to get a clear shot of his hand/wrist placement. Gotta make sure the viewers can see it first, if they want to learn it. Of course, all of that going on in this Shorts clip, and he makes it look effortless. A great description by him, aa well, to pull it all together. Good stuff. These videos from Beato are great.

I met Marty on the island of Oahu in the 80s.
This was years before he joined Megadeth.
I lived in an apartment building at the time and he lived in an apartment building just minutes away from me.
He was well known around town amongst us rockers because of his Shrapnel records albums with the band Hawaii.
I was a beginner but I got to jam with him on acoustic guitar alongside the Ala Wai canal.
I sucked but he was so cool, he even acted like I was a good player. I was kinda outta tune and he said, "I'm always interested in different tunings."
I could just hug him for that now. Happy he's getting his props after all these years.
My favorite track by Hawaii is the song Burn!

Only other one I can think of is George Benson. There was a paper written by a guitar teacher (I forget who) that broke down this sort of pick grip, with a conclusion it was capable of much faster speeds than normal grips, that is...if you can teach it to yourself.

    • @wyattoutlaw2370

That’s how you should hold the pick. I had to re learn how to play guitar this way and it sped up my picking but also provided a more efficient way to more easily control the attack and response of the pick.
If I try and hold it the old way I used to, (like the way Josh Meader does), it feels ‘less controlled’ if that makes sense?
Btw Josh Meader is a gun at guitar… not bash his pick hold style at all.

    • @luckymchl2074
      @luckymchl2074 24 дня назад

I always thought my picking grip was unique till I saw Marty Friedman's the first time. I have a reversed picking grip, so my pick angle is towards the top of the neck, and not the bottom. I'm left handed, but had to learn how to guitar play Right handed, so I think that's why I grip the pick the way I do. Been 41 years now. I still love playing my guitar everyday. If you watch Ola Englund's, or Tosin Abasi's picking, mine is pretty much the same, except I had it first in 1983. LOL. Marty also uses a reverse grip, but it looks like his pick angle is almost horizontal to the string. Still don't know how he does it. I was taught to always have an angle on my pick, and to avoid being horizontal to the strings as much as possible. Marty is great. Hope to meet him someday.

My guitar teacher introduced me to Marty Friedman. I have learned some songs and solos of his, and you can really tell how he plays differently than other players (and I don't mean how he holds his pick).
For example, when he ends on a note, he won't just sustain that note. He'll finish on the note before and bend a little bit (like a 1/4th bend) to get to the note he wants and vibrato the bend. Little things like that are ways he makes songs and solo his own and differ from other guitarists.
A good example of this is his song "miracle".

Glad you got him on. I have a huge amount of respect for this guy. He went his own damned way, as we all should. I got to see him on tour with Megadeath. He and Nick Menza being in Megadeath made that one of the best incarnations of that band. That show was freaking spot on. Marty is just so goddamned solid. I don't care what he's stretching for, he reaches it. I know he's labeled as a shredder but, how often do you hear shredders with that much heart in their lead melodies? His feel is as great as his speed. Love his playing and great to see a guy that never fell into the trappings or brought himself to ruin. I hear he's big in Japan now, good for you buddy.

My favorite thing about this is instead of saying "I might play..." Marty says "I might say..." then plays a sweet lick. That says volumes about what the artist is trying to express.

My guitar teacher said play your notes with authority. He then demonstrated the difference and even to my ears in 1988, I could hear the difference.

I'm always amazed at his picking style. A friend of mine got me listening to Marty. He just wasn't a guy I would listen to back in 90's. After seeing him with my buddy, I have been a fan ever since. Listen to different styles of guitar players but I found taking a bit from this one and that one I found my own style. It might not be recording worthy but it makes me happy.

Oh man. Marty Friedman might just be the reason why I listen to music. Sure, he’s probably mortal like the rest of us, but the musical taste buds that man has are just simply incredible. I know it’s selfish of me to say it, but I think he should just dish out records and just…keep doing that, whatever he is doing. Even if it’s something different each time.

Martys melodies are so interesting... and I believe that most people don't understand that he had a big blues phase in the 90s... he blues a lot on the megadeths countdown and youthanasia and also in one his best solo albums "scenes"

I like nothing more than playing instruments in F
It warms the very cockles of my heart
    The trouble is that F
    Can leave me vocally bereft
You see, I like playing in F major
But I like singing in F sharp
