This is such an excellent video, Hannah. I loved your C.S.I. vs Minority Report analogy. I used Mint for 7 years, but after trying YNAB for just over a month I switched and never looked back. You are spot on with the difference and how the benefit of YNAB is to prevent your financial disasters.

SAME! Mint always made it seem like I was failing and it was so frustrating! I love that YNAB acknowledges that not every month is the same, and if I spend more than average in December because of Christmas, it does not mean I am in the red!

I've tried Mint. Didn't work for me. Tried Every Dollar. Not for me. YNAB is the first and only budget concept that I've clicked with and helped me save over $3K to move into our new place. Bottom line, it's a concept that I connect with and that makes ALL the sense to me. Which allows me to STAY CONSISTENT, which is the one thing you need when making a budget. Consistency. Thank you, as always, for the work you do. It has changed my life. Btw are you hiring can I please work for you.

Mike, Mike, Mike... you're not alone!! Habits are the hardest thing to change. And when it comes to debt, I think our gut reaction in trying to fix our financial situation is the "pay off all my debt" mode, but until we secure and pad our future a little bit, the debt more than likely keeps building. I don‘t know Mint specifically, but I have tried a whole bunch of free „budgeting“ apps and I literally came to the same conclusion. Just documenting money going in and out doesn‘t help me much more than just looking at my bank account. YNAB really hits different when it comes to tracking long term obligations and figuring out if you can REALLY afford those new Jeans without messing up your future finances.

I used Toshl Pro budgeting app on trial and I needed to cancel the renewal. It was decent app with budgets and everything, but it was too complicated to use. Budget was too manual, and changing envelopes, so even at tight budget I was a little bit overspending from next month budget. Or underspending which was great. Savings first of course. I am now on YNAB trial and I see it works better. I didn't need any lessons, I just started to use it, and now read about casual topics around it. It was so easy to use and in no time I mean. Budget should work this way.
It is so easy here if you overspend, you take it out from somewhere else and no overspending happens. Also I wanted future planning, which Toshl didn't provide. Now I say this: the YNAB has a greater cost than 25 dollars a year, but it works as you want it to work. Budget should work for you, Toshl reacts too late and their envelope system is like I said too manual for now.

I lost my CDN integrations late last year and frankly fell off the budget wagon and let my transactions go stale. Was pretty unhappy with YNAB but wanted to get back in the budget game. Tried them all but none had the awesome power of giving every dollar a job and frankly nobody comes close to the amazing YNAB UI experience (looking at you Trellow, ugggh sort yourself out will ya) So I am back and loving it....manual is not that bad really.

Hmmm...I think the only difference is the mindset you have regarding budgeting. They essentially do the same thing. In Mint, you set up your budget at the beginning of each month. In YNAB, you set goals; semantics if you ask me. In Mint, you place transactions into designated categories as they come in. In YNAB, you do the same. You can adopt the YNAB philosophy "Only budget the money you have" into Mint as well. What YNAB has over Mint is how much easier it is to customize your budget categories. What Mint has over YNAB is it incorporates your monthly bills, making it a one stop shop for most of your recurring bills (i.e Netflix, Cellphone, Water). Also, setting up a goal to payoff a credit card calculates interest as well. Mint also has a wealth calculator and credit score monitoring. So far I have noticed that transactions take longer to show up in YNAB than they do in Mint, which almost forces you to manually enter transactions for budget accuracy. I have used Mint of/on for years and I am currently in my trial period for YNAB trying to decide which will work for me long term. As of right now, I am on the fence.

In a way, I prefer Simple because my all the money that’s been budgeted is coming from one account. With YNAB, I might have a savings budget, but that’s coming from multiple accounts.
Come to think of it, it’d be really interesting to see if YNAB takes this budgeting methodology and creates its own bank. Hmmmm. 🤔

"Handy freakin dandy." YNAB IS like Minority Report, one of the coolest movies of all time.

So I recently watch Minority Report for the 1st time a week ago (yeah, yeah I'm slow). Interestingly, the movie showed that Pre-crime and looking into the future is not legal, moral, or healthy. **SPOILER** But thankfully YNAB-Minority Report analogy stopped before then. Nice video addressing your competition without trashing them!!! Very tasteful, light, and fun - like Hannah!! :D

I really like they way you explained the differences. Because I have a much more organized plan of how I'm going to spend my money I feel that I have much more control of my future. It's really nice to know I'm in control of my budget and not the other way around. :-)

Hannah could totally consider a career in comedy after she's tired of helping people with budget stuff.

Oh Brianne, I wish I had a simple answer for this! I actual painted him myself :P Just got a plain white piggy bank that was on sale at Michaels, spray painted him with Krylon's "ballet slipper" pink, then painted Banksy's eyes, nose, and side smirk on. He's truly one of a kind!
