This song is considered to be Canada's oldest Carol. A Jesuit by the name of Jean de Brebeuf wrote the words in wendat to an old French traditional melody "Une Jeune Purcelle" while living among the Huron people on the shores of Lake Huron in 1640. History is messy, history happens... He wrote the song in an effort to teach the Hurons about Christianity, about the birth of Jesus. He likely thought he was saving these people from eternal suffering because they didn't know of Christianity.
Regardless of moral opinions the matter, the song encapsulates the early origins of modern day Canada - Jesuits, Huron people, imagery of wilderness, native culture meets European culture, Gitchi Manitou meets Jesus so to speak.
Shortly after writing this song for the Huron people, Jean and other Hurons were taken captive, ritually tortured and killed by Iroquois in 1649. But this song remains, and the result is a hauntingly beautiful gem of history bordering on the mystical.

Cette chanson est considérée comme la plus ancienne Carol du Canada. Un jésuite du nom de Jean de Brébeuf a écrit les paroles en wendat d'une vieille mélodie traditionnelle française "Une Jeune Purcelle" alors qu'il vivait parmi le peuple huron sur les rives du lac Huron en 1640. L'histoire est compliquée, l'histoire arrive... Il a écrit la chanson dans le but d'enseigner aux Hurons le christianisme et la naissance de Jésus. Il pensait probablement qu'il sauvait ces gens de la souffrance éternelle parce qu'ils ne connaissaient pas le christianisme.
Quelles que soient les opinions morales, la chanson résume les premières origines du Canada moderne - les jésuites, le peuple huron, l'imagerie de la nature sauvage, la culture autochtone rencontre la culture européenne, Gitchi Manitou rencontre Jésus pour ainsi dire.
Peu de temps après avoir écrit cette chanson pour le peuple huron, Jean et d’autres Hurons furent faits prisonniers, torturés rituellement et tués par les Iroquois en 1649. Mais cette chanson demeure, et le résultat est un joyau d’histoire d’une beauté envoûtante, à la limite du mystique.
