  • Pacific Explorer may be the smallest ship in the P&O Cruises fleet but there’s heaps to love about this ship. A sun-class cruise ship, she entered service in 1997 as the Dawn Princess. The ship sailed for Princess Cruises for 20 years until 2017 when it transferred to the Australian arm of P&O Cruises.
The ship is the flagship of P&O Australia, having undergone an extensive Australianisation refit. She was also treated to a few additional enhancements during the cruise pause, so post-pandemic travellers have access to all the amenities and enhancements made by P&O Australia.
I’ve sailed with Pacific Explorer three times so far, twice to showcase the ship for the Big Cruise Podcast, and once as a guest lecturer. P&O did get me onto the ship free of charge each time, but they did not ask me to make this video.
Let’s go aboard to discover the 5 best things about this ship - in my opinion anyway.

I’m going on the pacific explorer this November from Auckland. First cruise and going by myself. Very nervous but excited.

Our daughter has been working for a couple of months on Pacific explorer on the Edge experience, she absolutely loves it. We are off to have our very first cruise to see her in 3 week's time, so excited especially after watching this video, the only drawback is we are from the UK so will take us 2 day's to get there, but I know it will be worth it.

I sailed on the Oceana twice (P&O in the UK). The sun class ships are my favourite class of ship, not too big but big enough, and the wow factor in the atrium is through the roof. Thanks for another great video Chris.

OMG. Love this. Always loved the old Sun Class of ships. I remember when they were new. Franky and I worked together on OV2. He was and Ents crew. He was ALWAYS a crowd pleaser, and well loved by the passengers. I’m so happy to hear that he is still getting shout outs for his hard work. Well done mate. ❤❤❤kudos Chris for recognizing him. 👍🏻👍🏻🎉

Do you have a website or is there someplace where people can find out when you’re going to be presenting on board a ship? I live in Miami Florida, and I go on cruises quite frequently. I hope to see you on board a ship sometime in the near future.

With all the seminars you have given about The Titanic I thought you might have been sitting there with bated breath wondering what happened to mini sub having gone missing while exploring The Titanic. Today they said it was a catastrophic implosion a in the first few hours of the expedition. 0.2 of a second so they would have felt nothing. I remembered what you taught us that is the original photos of the grand staircase were taken inside the Olympic ( I think it was) and there were to be three ships......The Olympic, Titanic and Gigantic.......U C, I pay attention......My husband was fascinated when I told him what we learnt.

I went with low expectations which were met.
Just got back a Solomon Island cruise leaving and returning from Cairns.
The Pacific Explorer is tire tired tired...... Railing rusted through with endless coatings of paint, even paint cannot cover the rust.
Our room was a balcony cabin which was really small with even a smaller bathroom.
Food was a mixed bag; I feel a lot of the food was the same as the crew got daily.
    1. The Pantry food was very basic for breakfast which was disappointing, lunch was off and dinner very similar which I classed as a roast at your local RSL along with a few basic curries and basic stir fries.
    2. Waterfront was boarding on lower standard than the Pantry, food was very ordinary. Service the staff were lucky to get water in my glass each night when I went here. Staff would throw the cutlery into the draws and you could not even talk to the person sitting next to you.
    3. Dragon Lady was ok but again very basic and there is 2 menus which are rotated every 3 days, so no real change there.
    4. Angelo's was ok, but again fairly simple and basic.
    5. Garcia the Italian food was good, but you had to pay for it.
    6. Luke's food was excellent but again you had to pay for it and worth even cent.
Ship looked very tired and rusty and showing its age. All cabins haven't changed in their life since it was built in the late 90's.
Black Circus was up tp date, and a lot of the entertainment venues were good and modern, a shame for the rest of the ship.
A lot of the staff were good, and the cabin stewards good also.
