Mea Culpa: So I Was Wrong About.... in Nicaragua 🇳🇮

  • So it happens, I made a mistake and have many times said, and argued that there is no (reasonable) means of being able to take a job as an employee in Nicaragua for a foreigner. Well, it turns out that there is a reasonable accessible means of getting permissions to do that. So I detail what you need to do in this video to be able to do so. I apologize for getting this wrong. I still believe that no one should be affected, the utility of this **appears**, to the guy who was wrong about being legally able to do so, to still have no practical value to someone wanting income and only applies as a means for business people to do standard business tax wrangling or to manage their own investments. But it does exist officially.

    What you are saying is basically if your investing in a business you have the right to manage your business. If a investor can't be able manage your investments why would you invest

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад +1

      Yes, basically this seems like its purpose is to make it easy to manage your own business without it falling into a grey area. Like there IS a difference between overseeing the business, and grabbing a mop and pitching in. But with this, it means you CAN grab the mop and pitch in if you want.

    As precocious teenager, I was once advised against a know-it-all persona wouldn’t get me far in life. Humbleness in sales taught me to loudly & blatantly announce my errors to affected parties up front: Keeps me on track to speaking with people, not at people.
    Keep preaching the good words.

      I worked on Wall St. for a lot of my career and one thing that I learned was that if you tried to bury a mistake, people would go hunting for it and be relentless. A lot of my junior staff would try to "hide", not lie just avoid discussion, of mistakes. I would go to business owners (internal bank business units) and take ownership of the team's mistakes. The instant I would do so, all blame, all anger, all "hunting" would end. Suddenly it's "oh man, no worries, mistakes happen, we don't want to blame anyone, let's just get the job done." Hiding mistakes is a bad way to go.

    Thanks for circling back on this topic Scott! I think my situation may be an example of where this makes sense. I have a US passport and am currently living in Nica as a tourist. I am planning on investing in property and building a small boutique beach resort, then utilizing this investment to apply for residency. Additionally, I am a conservation biologist who would like to use my skills to help conserve the precious and imperiled natural resources in my area. Gaining residency will allow me to apply for grant money to fund conservation on large land holdings in my area, and then take a portion as my salary. The investment requirement ($30k) also covers my housing as I'm building my house on the same lot, hedging my investment bet. The combined income of my investment (resort) and the conservation funds I raise, will combine to provide me with a sustainable living wage. While it looks like I've found another mechanism to accomplish the same goal, this was my original plan and may still be a path to living in Nica for some. Some of us have multiple skills, and being able to take a salary here is part of our holistic approach to long term success here in Nica. Make sense/thoughts?

    I thought of a USE CASE: imagine you are a bad investor and you invest tons of money over many years and lose it all so now you need a job to survive.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад

      Lots of people mention that one. But there are a few reasons why it doesn't really make sense. Basically three:
      1) If you are investing more than you can handle losing and/or expecting to LIVE from the investments instead of living DESPITE the investments, that's a failure and would consistute a "sorry, but you failed the requirements to live here". Those are the two most important investment rules in a place like this. Anyone investing and breaking either of those rules has chosen to have a problem that they didn't have to have.
      2) If (1) actually did happen, then you are a foreign investor by definition and should have access to work a remote job the same after that failure as you did before that failure (e.g. the investment failure is unfortunate, but doesn't change the working situation from before doing it.
      3) If you were in a situation where you were 1) a failure investor and lost it all and 2) unemployable from your home country - Nicaragua is not responsible for providing a job when Nicaraguans have less access to resources to work outside the country and need every possible internal job. Your ability to earn internally would not be enough to realistically live on in 99.99% of cases, nor would it qualify for residency.
      Even if Nicaragua allowed it, and jobs were available and in the future all Nicaraguans are employed and there's no problem with foreigners taking up one of the available jobs... unless the pay scales change dramatically, the income from a foreigner working here under the conditions of "having to work here" essentially guarantees that the income will be far too low to realistically live on.

    • @ScottAlanMillerVlog
      @ScottAlanMillerVlog  Месяц назад

      @ejnava01 Why do you feel you "should" be able to work as a foreigner in a country without enough jobs for the locals? Why "should" a local lose a job to a guest when jobs are the top crises in the country? Literally every expat that takes a job that "could" be done by a Nicaragua causes another Nicaragua to be forced to leave his homeland to find work elsewhere to feed his family. That feels like a really weird thing to say "should" happen. What makes you so persistent in saying Nicaraguans "should" lose the ability to be employed in their own country, but that foreigners "should" be able to? What drives that desire to hurt the country so much?

    This will not affect the majority of expats going to Nicaragua. I'm focused on the excellent information you're giving us without shilling for something as some others do. Plus, I admire that you quickly accept and redress the error. Keep up the great work!
