All due respect to Roger Staubach who I think is one of the most underrated QBs in NFL history but the most valuable pick the Cowboys ever made (and in that way the greatest) was Herschel Walker for a 5th round pick in 1985. Thanks to that selection Dallas was able to engineer the trade that built the dynasty that would win 3 Super Bowls in the 90s. Without Walker there is no Emmitt Smith in Dallas, no Russell Maryland, no Darren Woodson, No Kevin Smith and several other players that would eventually start games for the Cowboys. Roger was the final piece that brought 2 Lombardi Trophies and 5 Super Bowl appearances to Dallas and he was a fantastic player. But even if Dallas had gotten nothing but Emmitt Smith for that 85 fifth round pick they used on Walker it still would have been the most valuable draft choice they ever made.

@@alaskaguyd963 look at it this way, Denver could arguably have John Elway as their greatest draft pick ever.... except they didn't draft him they traded for him. Does that mean Elway was their greatest trade or their greatest draft pick or their greatest player?
The question wasn't who is the greatest player for every team, the question was who was the greatest draft pick. To me the greatest draft pick was the one they got the most value out of.
Here's another one to chew on, Matt Ryan is listed as Atlanta's greatest draft pick. And I think that's a fair choice, but honestly the greatest player to ever be a Falcon draft pick was Deion Sanders and it's not even close IMO. However because Atlanta only kept him for 5 years or so his value as a draft pick was some what wasted for them.
Again it's about the greatest pick not the greatest player and the greatest pick is the one that gave the most value to the team.
